This update is making me learn everything all over again. ._.
Out of the many things i have asked to complete strangers in Haven, Forge is one inquiry which I do not understand at all.

  • Is Forge the new way of heating items?
  • Is Heat Embers dropped by enemies used in Forge or is it just Fire Crystals dropped from boxes that is used?
  • What is now useful for Heat Embers? Pets?
  • Forge's chance seems to be broken? 60% chance of success is good odds but that seems to be untrue.
  • How come other items that had heat before the patch not show up in Forge UI Button? (i have few 3* and 4* on Level 6, etc)
  • Is making a 5 star item heated requiring hours and hours of grinding in Arcade?
  • Is "Forge" the new way for OOO to make money?

Heat stuff until the bar

Heat stuff until the bar fills with heat dropped from enemies and boxes. Use heat crystals to get to the next heat level to continue heating

OOO is using this to slow progression in the game.

"Is making a 5 star item heated requiring hours and hours of grinding in Arcade?"

Yes and no. Unsurprisingly, elite FSC gives you everything you need fast enough. Now, if you play arcade on normal... good luck.

So....

Heat Embers still work the same way, slowly advancing the level of a item BUT to get it from Level 1 to Level 2, it will need to be forged with a buttload of Fire Crystals? As in to get ONE weapon from Level 1 to Level 10 will need about 30+ fire crystals? >.<

And FSC on Elite gives the most required materials. And im just doing this to make one last weapon. Ha.

p.s. the Wiki should be more clear.

I dont know, thirty fire

I dont know, thirty fire crystals seems cheap. I leveled my dbb to 10 today, and I think it took 90-100 for the 100%

Also, different stratums, gives different fire crystals. There may be some overlap, but generally you do the deeper depths for higher star and vice versa.

ONE weapon from Level 1 to

ONE weapon from Level 1 to Level 10 will need MUCH MORE then 30+ fire crystals.
5* weapon needs over 90 for a single 100% chance of lvl up. So it would be more like 900 fire crystals for a single 5* weapons!
So far, using the crystals I got as a Vanguard and newly found ones, I was able to level up three 4* items ONCE and two 5* items ONCE. This is how my Forge is looking. The worst part is I can't really use items that are in Forge because they don't accumulate heat, so all embers would be wasted.

Actually I think that OOO totally failed on part (extract from Nick's post regarding crafting/heating changes):
This, in turn, will make it easier for Spiral Knights players to experiment with more varied equipment and gameplay styles.

Before update I was planning on getting many new items to check them out (I was slowly working toward Nitrome, Supernova and Fearless Rigadoon). Also I was thinking about upgrading random, yet interesting, items I've found in treasure boxes (Irontech Bomb, Rock Jelly Shield). Now, seeing how many Fire Crystals it takes to level up just my main loudouts I must admit I see no chances for, as Nick said it, experiment with more varied equipment and gameplay styles. Not any time soon at least. Plus I'll totally start ignoring less efficient gear that I already have in my Arsenal. To name the few, I have Heater Shield max heated at level 6, Iron Slug max heated at level 3 and Volcanic Pepperbox max heated at level 5 - but since I don't have enough crystals to level up my more essential items (like Crest of Almire), why would I bother wasting my crystals on experiments?

Before update the only factor that slows down my arsenal building was time - now I've found out that even though I have time to play I don't have anything to heat (most under-levelled items are max heated in Forge), so my motivation to play is far weaker - gathering embers just to "trash" them at elevator makes me feel awkward.

That 90 crystal cost is for

That 90 crystal cost is for the high heat levels. I was leveling my chaos cloak 1-3 just now and none of those has costed over 10 crystals yet.

@Demonicsothe

Good to know. Maybe the system is all right if someone has started knightly career after it was implemented.
I suppose if such system were implemented since beta I would have accumulated lots of crystals by now.

And I could be wrong, but the

And I could be wrong, but the low levels of a 5*gear levels up really fast. Managed to get 3* and 5* close to leveling from empty, while carrying around my sprite.

And that was when I joined at the end of fsc just picking up the loot from boxes before vana.

I also had a feeling items

I also had a feeling items heat up faster then before update. If it's true, it only means that my limited crystals reserves dwindles even faster :-)

I don't think anyone gave a clear answer, so I'll give it a shot:

Forge is the only way you can upgrade your weapons. It's no longer passive. You need to meet two requirements to upgrade:

- Your Heat gauge must be full
- You must have enough Fire Crystals (There's a certain kind for every * of weapon)

Once you have enough Fire Crystals, you can see three small buttons with orange circles in them within the Forge. This determines how many Fire Crystals you want to use.

If you use the minimum (Leveling my Gran Faust right now, the minimum for that was 32 for Level 9), you have around a 30% chance of Forging success with no benefits. If the Forging fails, you lose the Fire Crystals, and your weapon does not upgrade at all. Not really recommended.

Using an average amount (64 for my Gran Faust) boosts it to 70%, and gives a few benefits, such as extra Heat or skipping upgrade levels. However, keep in mind the bonuses are mere chances, and never guarantees.

Using an extreme amount (96 for my Gran Faust) gives you a 100% chance of success, and more benefits, such as a random box. It's worth taking the time to farm enough Fire Crystals to get that 100% Forge chance, to avoid wasting them, and to perhaps get a nice bonus.

Keep in mind that you can also buy Fire Crystals on the Auction House, although they tend to be rather expensive.
