What are the "Stratums"

I keep hearing about "S4" and "S5"

I know it means "Stratum", BUT WHAT IS A STRATUM?

WHERE IS IT?

WHERE DO YOU FIND IT?

IS IT TIERS?

One stratum, two strata

The Clockworks are divided into 6 Strata:

Stratum 1: Tier 1, before Basil
Stratum 2: Tier 1, after Basil
Stratum 3: Tier 2, before Basil
Stratum 4: Tier 2, after Basil
Stratum 5: Tier 3, before Basil
Stratum 6: Tier 3, after Basil

Technically half a tier. A

Technically half a tier. A stratum starts and ends at a terminal or town. So running from D0 to the first basil means you did S1

ARCADE

EACH TIER IS SPLIT IN 2 STRATUMS.
STRATUM 1 IS FROM HAVEN TO FIRST BASIL (D4)
STRATUM 2 IS FROM BASIL TO MOORCROFT
STRATUM 3 IS FROM MOORCROFT TO BASIL 2 (D13)

AND SO ON..

a thread AND an entire wiki page about strata and no mention of even strata having higher payout whatsoever?
thats the only thing of interest COME ON!!!
