At one point we had a 1969 date, probably because the system had a value of -1 (common error default return value) in there for a timestamp (0 is midnight january 1st, 1970 GMT).

Yeah, I had seen that, and screenshot it. That was an actual bug, being that it was the timestamp, rather than the message name. Message name showing the wrong year? Blame the GM who sent it.
Not really a bug, someone just messed up the date in the message.
Also, yes, the companion prize box is for every day you log in until the 14th.
