Should I focus more on armor that improves the weapons I use (I'm a gun/bomb hybrid), or should I go more for armor sets that protect against particular damage types (shadow, elemental, etc.)?

You should focus on armors that give offensive bonuses. So, if you were a bomber, you would pick from the Demo sets (and Chaos), all of which are elemental. This would make you weak against shadow and piercing enemies. But the offense is still worth it, at least for experienced players. As Juances said, gunners and sworders have an easier time, because they have offensive armors for each damage type.
You can read the Gunslinger Guide and Bombing Guide on the wiki, to learn more about armor. Bomber armor depends somewhat on whether you use damage-oriented bombs (Nitronome, Dark Briar Barrage, etc.) or effect-oriented bombs (Ash of Agni, Graviton Vortex, etc.). The former benefit from both damage bonus and charge time reduction. The latter benefit from CTR, but don't really benefit from damage bonus much. Sadly, there is no point in getting Mad Bomber anymore, because Chaos is offensively much more powerful and defensively comparable.
My recommendation for you is either:
* Mix Volcanic Demo and Shadowsun (decent offense, decent defense).
* Chaos (awesome offense, terrible defense).

there is some armour called
there is some armour called the fencing jacket it gives you more melee damage out put medium which is really good. its 250 from the armour vendor in bazaar hope this helps abit

Cylops is for skilled gunners. It gives Gun damage medium which is same as shadowsun piece (I might be wrong because I mostly bomb). So if you can dodge most attacks from monstors, it would be cheaper to get a Cyclops helmet. Since he is a gunner, he shouldnt get hit often or let his shield break (Unless he is in a danger room or arena where all those turrets spawn.).
Edit:Saw that he was a bomber too, as a bomber you have to place them in good places so that sometimes make you take risks so I guess he should get volcanic demo piece and shadowsun piece if he wants to be safe. If he wants all out offensive he should get chaos set.
