So why hasn't Spiral Knights tapped this resource yet?
Cool costumes and accessories are what a lot of other "freemium" models use, and are quite successful with nothing but appearance items.

Since they have no stats you can't even remotely call costume items 'pay to win' either.
Maybe even special battle pets or something.

Hell I'd drop $10 for a cool costume. Maybe even add in weapon/shield costume items.

Just my opinion, but it seems silly to have a big market for such items and ignoring it. Considering how much cat/wolver tails and auras sell for it's obvious there's a massive demand for them.

Because there are lockboxes and silver keys.

Since that's random, they gain more profit that way than just giving you what you want.

For people who buy keys sure.

For people who buy keys sure. How many people don't buy keys simply because of the random factor?
You can't honestly tell me if they kept the key system in game but added some costumes and accessories as straight purchases that it wouldn't get them more money.

People like options and I know personally I'm not going to buy keys for a 1% chance at getting a costume I want, but have no problem dropping $10+ if it's guaranteed.
