That little icon that won't go away has been a real frustration lately, so I've been trying to avoid heating stuff until I have enough Fire crystals to forge it. But am I better off just getting it out of the way, even if it means I have a full Forge list all the time?
Is there really any reason to AVOID heating gear when I don't have a lot of crystals?

Yeah, I'm scared of heating my items now lol. So I'm just going to hoard a good thousand or two crystals and then go for it.

Heat your 5* thing up then heat your T1 LD equipment.

well, i heat my gear first in FSC (or other level bosses) and then i search crystals in tiers with a lot of boxes (example: arena)
there is no problem heating the gear first, the problem is the ammount of crystals
I just heat all the time unless I need specific gear for a level that is already heated. The Forge is really annoying how it always pops up when I'm trying to select weapons in the Arsenal. -_-
