Am I the only one who thinks this event is less than what it is?

Fun new enemies with some unique gimmicks to them that can randomly be encountered, reminding you there's an event going on? Sure, if I spot one that isn't forced I'll let you know. A well-designed, difficult but viable boss with an awesome reward? More or less restricted content.

I'd love to fight Margrel but I'm never going to get there because I'm never going to find a book - I can't even find the black kats on the levels people say have lots of them.
This event has a fair bit of awesome content to it considering it only runs a week, but purely because three rings decided random number generators would be a good way to hand out loot, me and many others are not going to get to experience it at all while others run around with multiple black kat cowls.

Think of it this way, what if the current clockworks bosses dropped their tokens in a rare drop from enemies along the way, and if you don't get at least 100 you don't get to fight the boss. That's more or less what this feels like to me.
You're not rewarding skill, and you're not much rewarding playing. You're rewarding luck, which should not be a playing element in completely locking users out of content.

Don't get me wrong, I'm going to keep trying so that I hopefully one day fight Margrel with a couple of friends, but I have a feeling it's going to be a few events before I get there - and I was playing last year, too.

I agree. RNG has been proven

I agree. RNG has been proven to be an awful way to handle rewards.
TF2 is the only game that has done RNG right.

TF2 is not a game, it's a live hat trading simulator.
(But yea I agree)

I never understood why did

I never understood why did OOO bother to make a boss that only the playerbase's 0.01% will be able to fight.

If it makes you feel better, Margrel is the only boss you'll pull out of the lottery bin, along with the Black Kat Cowl. It's pretty well-thought-out gimmick in my opinion. Luck is a big deal, especially to superstitious people. And gambling addicts. Wait, wasn't gambling a game?

I wouldn't really raise that much fuss over one in-game item and boss that was made special/restricted by the method you obtain it. Just because it said 'free to play' it doesn't mean you can have every item in the game.

If you were to get a book, would you post in all over the forums?

No, but that's only because I'm not the sort of person to do that regardless of the item. I don't have a problem with F2P being almost-F2P specifically, but being free to play should mean I can go for any single item in the game and get it eventually. I bought the Crimson Hammer DLC - £4, that's all, for 2 new weapons, a new helmet, both of which everyone in the party can get, and 5 new levels including a new boss that you can repeat as much as you like (or 6 new weapons and 3 new pieces if you include every star level, but let's not). This book of dark rituals, on the other hand, is being sold for crowns in the millions which is over £20 worth if you buy CE and sell it right out. For a single chance at a single boss and a single helmet, that only one player gets.

RNG is just not a good system in the first place, and a 1 in 7500 chance simply isn't high enough. It also doesn't help that there are so few black kats (I've still seen none) that I don't even feel like I'm making progress. I understand the Cowl is supposed to be rare, but if you're going to rile up a ton of players for a single week, you should at least give a goal that's viable for completion.

I said this the first time the event came out, and now that it's back all that's changed is a minimal increase to their spawn rate...
