I'm a preview player but I didn't play long enough to know...

But wasn't there five star item selling all the way through that? Mind you I don't know.

And I'm not commenting for or against binding, I'm just curious as what it was like during the months where this was being tested because if this was a regular practice then, then I don't get the point of the change (and if it wasn't, then I see the point).

That's all for my question, no big need to discuss anything else, if you answer that's more than enough :D

Radiant Sun Shards for I

Radiant Sun Shards for I think it was 107,500 crowns or something like that.

It was basically a way to bring down the enormous costs of CE for a while (which were over 30k Cr x 100 CE) at the time.

EDIT: Misunderstood the post!
Oh well.

Anyway, people could trade 5-star items, but they weren't around for much of the beta.
It was mostly people trading for ultra rare materials that only dropped from Treasure Boxes and Sealed Swords and Antiguas which only dropped from Treasure Boxes too.

Everything else was pretty cheap and easy to do.
I had like 1000 of every shard by the end of the preview and only played for like 40 something hours over the whole thing, drop rates were pretty high.

Selling 5-star items wasn't all that common really, since there was no market for it.
There wasn't really a market for any pre-crafted items.
Mainly just recipes and super rare materials.

The influx of players with disposable incomes ready to pay any price for shinies brought in a market akin to powerleveling alongside what is technically an in-game RMT system.
And that is why they had to take measures to stop it.

That's how I see it, anyway.

sure there was

Back then there was only one instance of Haven. If you wanted something crafted for you, you could find people standing near the Alchemy machine in the Arcade or in the Bazaar. Or you'd ask around on /1 (there was no /2). The Bazaar forum was also used for this a lot (I haven't been there since the release).

Sure people crafted for others and leveled weapons for others. Maybe it happened relatively less, maybe it was just less visible (because there was no need to spam zone chat about it). Most of the time people weren't trying to make a profit with the non-rare, non-UV items. Just helping eachother out. There was definitely no scamming, since the community was quite small and we were there to test the game, not to exploit it.

Either way, whether it was relatively less or not, the current amount of selling of premades and Basil ports must have been overwhelming and instancing / trade chat made it all the more obvious.

At least in the most recent

At least in the most recent preview event, 5* items didn't even exist until around December of '10. Still a considerable amount of time, but I didn't often see people offering up Premades for chunk loads of CE or Crowns, but that is just my visible experience. I wasn't too heavily involved in trade, but I did check the Bazaar often.

5-star materials were usually

5-star materials were usually very rare and quite profitable. It was not unusual to hear of a Meteor Mote (a 4-star) going for over 100ce when they first started dropping. It was initially quite difficult to get your hands on many 4 and 5 star materials and many people had 4-star equips for much longer as the hunted for the rare mats.

There were a few problems

There were a few problems with the materials dropping back in the preview event. There were some 5* materials that were very easy to obtain (ex. Primal Ore), but demand for it was very low. I don't think Primal Ore was used in much equips. On the contrary, some 2* and 3* materials didn't drop at all. Rock Salt was a 3* (or 2*, I don't remember) item and hardly ever dropped from tier 3. It wasn't surprising to see Rock Salt be worth much much more than a Primal Ore, if anyone was looking for Primal Ore. Obtaining certain materials was more problematic than crafting a 5* sword.

It was just easier to craft your own equipment than to buy it off of someone else. Like Shoebox said, materials and non-recipe gear was what was usually traded.

So, I guess we can conclude

So, I guess we can conclude that the market didn't really get much testing going on?

That explains a few things.

The playerbase simply wasn't

The playerbase simply wasn't there until March. There were a few threads discussing how things could go, but it was all theory since no mass behavior could be observed.

There's also the hiccup that by the time the top gear was accessible to anyone in game there were many few months old players who had massive reserves of everything. I rarely traded for anything because I literally had 10s to 100s of most materials and small mountain of crowns. This meant that it was easier to do everything yourself.
