Don't get hit

In this game, the armour vs damage mechanics favor not being hit at all, because the defence on armour doesn't ramp up as fast as monster damage does. Thus, it is more important to get as strong of a weapon as you can while learning to dodge, interrupt, or otherwise manipulate your surroundings to not get hit.

So the question then becomes, fast weapons? I'm assuming you looked at the hall of hero and thought you would like the striker equipment. Well, that's mostly swords. So here's the obligatory sword guide by Bopp.

The two offensive shields are

The two offensive shields are barbarous thorn shield and swiftstrike buckler. Bts is a piercing shield with swords damage medium. It builds from the twisted targe line as a reward by trading in tokens you receive defeating the snarbolax boss. Swiftstrike is a normal only 3* shield, but provides an attack speed increase high for all your weapons. Bts is more durable than swiftstrike, however it only provides damage bonus to swords.

As you progress, you would eventually want a shield for each damage type, and even damage type+status resist. So if you were to get the bts, that's piercing defence covered. Then you would need an elemental and shadow defence shield. For elemental, I suggest the grey owlite shield. It holds up well against elemental attacks and has resistance to fire and shock, 2 of the more dangerous types of status. As for the shadow shield, a skelly shield is the easiest to obtain. But if you can hold out until you reach firestorm citadel, where vanaduke resides, a crest of almire from the token reward blackened crest is amazing. It provides shadow defence as well as the same status resist as owlite.

all covered in the guide

Demonicsothe, thanks for saving me some work.

Byzanaut, if you read my sword guide, then you see arguments against the sword called Striker (Dread Venom Striker or Wild Hunting Blade). Those swords are fun, but not great. And you see what shield to get, in the "Armor, Shield, and Trinkets" section. Also in that section you see how to become a glass cannon and how to avoid becoming a glass cannon. Maybe read some of it and come back with more specific questions?

As for the Glass Cannon Part...

The only way you are going to be tanky is if you have, at minimum, 3 different complete armor sets. Each set dedicated to one of the specialized damage types: Elemental, Pierce, and Shadow. It'll slow down your game progression, but if you the have proper armor types, you can reduce incoming damage by like 50%... Albeit in tier 3, 50% of the damage you take will still be like a quarter of your health.
