Bopp, I'm surprised you didn't link your detailed Sword Guide. Even though it's about swords it does have some key information I.E What Monsters are weak to and resistant to, etc.
But you'll want to focus on your missions, I strongly recommend that you DO NOT waste your time and money on 1 star gear. Once you are Rank 3-1 focus on getting some 2 star gear. There are different play styles; Sword users, gunners, and bombers. I also recommend that you do not upgrade your Cobalt Gear. At Rank 3-2 9 think) you will get new missions...
The Pioneers
Faith in Armor
Strength in Unity
Blades of the Fallen
Shadow of the Beast
The 3 middle missions reward you with free 2 star armor, I strongly advise that you do not upgrade it because you will later regret it. It is the weakest gear in the game.
There are also 4 types of monster defence: Normal, Piercing, Elemental, and Shadow.
There are 6 monster families: Beast, Slime, Gremlin, Construct, Undead, and Fiend.
Beast's and Slime's deal Piercing Damage, so for those levels you will want to get some piercing gear.
Gremlin's and Construct's deal Elemental Damage, so for those levels you will want to get some Elemental gear.
Undead and Fiends deal Shadow Damage, so for those levels you will want to get some Elemental gear.
Every monster type deals Normal Damage +a specialised damage( Piercing, etc).
Feel free to familiarize yourself with the different types of monsters... I'll link you to the wiki page showing you the different monsters in each category:

I'm sorry if I've thrown too much information at you, but most of it is key towards surviving well. I'll stop here but there is still loads more to damages and resistance. I don't want to add too much otherwise I'll bore you to death.
"The 3 middle missions reward you with free 2 star armor, I strongly advise that you do not upgrade it because you will later regret it. It is the weakest gear in the game."
Why is it the weakest gear? Lots of people use the Blast Bomb and the Calibur (yes you others who have many weapons of every damage type in the game might not like it I don't care) is okay for lots of circumstances. The Blaster is ok too. The armor and shield are kind of iffy though.

"The armor and shield are kind of iffy though."
You ended up agreeing with that :p
Who said anything about the WEAPONS?
@Skykillerthefirst It is the weakest because...
1) No extra Health Bonus like Ancient Plate Set
2) No Status Resistances
3) It's piercing defence is fine but overall it's not worth it.
Plus you just contradicted yourself by saying that it's iffy
"Why is it the weakest gear? Lots of people use the Blast Bomb and the Calibur"
I didn't say anything about the weapons. They're pretty good, actually. So your rambling is pointless.
The cobalt line weapons are good for knockback and just about anything, but the armor is different.
The shield is actually decent in defense for piercing. Aegis(which looks cool as well) can be useful for beasts and slime. the other piercing shield, Barbous(dunno the spelling off the top of my head) Thorn Shield(BTS) has slightly reduced defense in exchange for sword damage bonus of medium is harder to obtain while aegis has free recipes, so aegis isn't too bad.
The actual armor set has a bit more defense than the ever popular wolver line, but lacks status resistances. A lot of other armors outshine this set any day, but it is cheap and looks alright. (WARNING : wearing this makes people think you're a noob, and may refer to you as "that cobalt noob," unfortunately )
READ ALL THE WIKI PAGES!!!
The SK wiki is super helpful,

Vazs, as you can see, a thread sometimes ends up being a big argument, even when all of the posters agree with each other.
Welcome to Cradle Vazs! Here's a simple tip on how to get to know the game better; contact me in-game where I can help you! IGN : Knowmenot
Take care!

I know you're trying to be helpful, but he most likely doesn't know how to add people, no offence Vazs. Hardfault, you should probably just add him instead.
You may find my guide very helpful if you are a new player

@Lord-Patches
Few things I disagree with...
Firstly, you're stealing Bopp's job.
Second, this thread has kinda died. A week is kinda pushing it, especially when the thread creator hasn't posted anything in it for a while.
Finally, above all else, you're suggesting the CHAOS SET for a NEW PLAYER. Chaos set should only be suggested to veteran players. You should NOT suggest it to someone as their first armor set, especially when they probably don't have the budget for UV's to fill the weakness's in the Chaos Set.
Firstly, you're stealing Bopp's job.
Ha, yes. These forums can tolerate at most one incorrigible spammer. For a while, Fehzor and Krakob were contenders, but they had the good taste to retire. Lord-Patches can take his turn, or we can split the job.
Seriously, I do feel that new players should be aware of Chaos. But they should certainly know its drawbacks. And they should not be told, as some threads around here seem to say, that only incompetent players need defense, Chaos is the only armor worth having, and anyone not using Chaos is an idiot.
DONT DO WHAT LORD SAY !.I dont want to be ofensive agaist Lord but no.There is lot of set in SK not only Chaos which is VERY hard to use.Read the wiki look to all 5* set and choose how you want to be like when 5*.Then make what you want at level 2* (use the AH (Auction House) to buy 2* item its more easy and valuable(i think)) and make thos set to 5* (its will tkae lot of time but dont give up) and find a good guild that will help you.And when you are good you should start a chaos set.Thats only what i think.
@Bopp:AN IDOIT YOU SAY?Hey WAKE UP.Anyone lagging in FSC will not use chaos set cause lag alway throw you in fire OK.The chaos set i like each other. You can use it or not if you want or not.Its not an absolute set OK absolute d'ont exist in SK.Im using mercurial one of the les used set but i like it.I dont like Chaos and thats nots why im an idiot. If you c'ant uderdstand thats each set is set for a different gameplay and thats Chaos is for a type of gameplay its cause you have a SERIOUS problem.
Popoixd... reread what Bopp wrote... I think you may have misinterpreted something...
Popoixd, we have no argument. You're agreeing with me. Cheers.
Ok so sorry. But the thing about gameplay still each set ia a gameplay but you say i agree whit you? ok so plz explain me that '' Chaos is the only armor worth having, and anyone not using Chaos is an idiot.''
How about the: "And they should not be told, as some threads around here seem to say, that only incompetent players need defense..." that's just before it....
Other people say things like "Chaos is the only armor worth having, and anyone not using Chaos is an idiot." And I'm saying that I disagree with those people. And you're saying the same thing as me. We both disagree with those people. We agree with each other. Do you understand now?
Thanks for helping, Traevelliath.

Sorry about thats we think the same thing. :3
At some points in this game there will be tons of grinding/farming. BE. PATIENT. This is what drives some people away from games like this, mostly because they have no patience. PLEASE have patience.
It also really helps to have a friend who is willing to give you energy and crowns and even items just to help you along.
@Traevelliath: You say you disagree with recommending Chaos Set to a new player. My guide recommends Chaos Set for reaching maximum damage, however that is not the 2* version. New players will have to progress through all the gear upgrades and thus improve their gameplay along the way. Chaos Set does not have any negative status resist until 5*. Unless a new player spends real life $$ and buys 5* Chaos off the AH then they will be fine.
It has no negative resists, but absolutely no bonuses as well. This actually makes the players who only used the magic set up to that point unprepared for chaos, both in offensive bonuses and then how weak they are to statuses they resisted using the earlier armour.
If new players manage to start only with magic cloaks and survive without CTR on their bombs or damage on their swords then why would they need chaos?
The problem isn't just getting used to chaos, but to get to make it without being tempeted to craft a wolver/demo/gunslinger to get a head start instead.
Chaos is great, but not very helpfull for the average new player. They'll get stuck at RJP! (seriously, it happens)
At the top of this very forum is a thread called "Useful Links for New Recruits":
http://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/10297
Check that out. Also, go through the rank missions in order. As you do a mission, don't skip the text; read all of it. Missions were introduced to the game, specifically to teach newbies how the game works.
Ask follow-up questions, when you have specific questions. (It's hard to answer requests such as "explain the whole game to me".) Enjoy!
