I'd like to stop using the combuster, but I can't. It's not because it's OP as much as because being OP makes grinding go a lot faster. Is there a trick to quitting? I've tried before, but lose patience and go right back.

Your thread made me laugh. I agree with Demonicsothe. Try some of the other overpowered weapons. For example, declare to yourself that you will not walk anywhere; you will only move using the Warmaster Rocket Hammer dash. That practice will get you skilled on that weapon quickly. And alchemers really are quite powerful and fun.

Sell the Combuster. Cry for a bit. Now make something else with that nifty 30k you just earned that was probably not worth it.

WRH is hard to use without taking damage but the payoff is probably better than Combuster and it's most certainly more fun. If you ask me, Combuster is sadly the most overpowered sword in the game with the highest combo DPS (at least IIRC) of all swords+one of the most powerful charges which also works terribly well defensively.
Switch shooting Alchemers or just going Blitz/VPB could work, although the latter will obviously be very challenging at some points.

Funny that one of you mentioned the BTB. My main reason for concern is that I've started a pirate-themed alt who will pretty much only be using BTB with antigua line weapons for backup. However, I can see myself wanting to build another combuster for the sake of faster grinds.

This is getting off the topic. The char is pirate-themed, which pretty much limits me to Flourish/BTB(Rapiers), Cutter/Spur/FoV (Sabers), and Antiguas/Iron Slug (pistols). I'm not looking for an OP substitute, but to be able to break free from it entirely.
Get 2 alchemers and switch shoot them. The amount of damage you put out is no joke.
