Okay so I have gone own into the clock works several times now and have finally made it down to tier 2, but I left because I wanted to craft a new item. When I went back to go to the Clockworks I had to start at the first tier again. Am I going to have to restart at the first tier every time I go down into the Clockworks?

Ok I see what I did wrong. I never crossed the barrier. Ok so Ill have to make another trip down then. Thanks a lot on the help.

Even after you receive
Even after you receive clearance to skip to Tier 2, you can get the crown fee removed if you've reached it the old-fashioned way at least once during that gate's lifetime. So if you clear your way to Tier 2 in, for example, the Diamond Titan gate, you can skip to Moorcroft Manor for free-- but only in the Diamond Titan gate.
If you jumped into a party at the end of Depth 7 and then just immediately take the elevator down to Depth 8 (start of Tier 2), it still counts.
Gates last 8 days (they scoot one space to the left every 2 days and then disappear), so you'll need to clear Tier 1 in another gate eventually, if you want continued free Tier 2 access. Or you can just pay the 200 crowns each time you jump in.
No, you'll be able to skip directly to tier 2, and eventually tier 3, for a small crown fee.
The first time you go to tier 2, you have to get there by playing through Tier 1. You'll need 2* armor, helmet, shield, and weapon. Once you have those, talk to the guard by the red haze barrier. He'll give you permission to proceed and the barrier will turn white (you'll also be sent a mist tank in the mail!). Once that barrier is white, you'll be able to get directly to tier 2 any time, any gate, for 200 crowns.
