what's your "class"?

In Spiral Knights, there are no formal "character classes", such as Fighter, Thief, Cleric, etc. But we do have informal classes: sworder, gunner, bomber, gunner/bomber, etc. This choice is entirely up to you, and you can change it at any time, and there is no right answer. But we can't really discuss which equipment is best for you, until you choose a class to work with.

Right now, you seem to be the "default" class, which is sworder/gunner. You might find my detailed sword guide helpful. It talks about swords, sidearm guns, armor for sworders, etc. In particular, here are two pieces of advice for you:

Always plan your equipment in terms of 5-star items. Try to figure out which 5-star items you want, and then look back in their alchemy trees, to figure out how to get them. By planning in this way, you avoid dead ends such as Hot Edge, Winmillion, etc.

The default armor/shield (Cobalt, Defender) is not very good. Its damage defense is fine, but its status defense is terrible, and it offers no offensive bonuses. Stop upgrading them. Read my sword guide for better ideas.

The game offers different kind of weapons and it's up to you to choose. We can't provide much advice other than replace those weapon with appropiate lines that can be upgraded further.

Read the one that suits you:

Class

Ok. I was aware of the informal classes and I don't want to be a bomber. I like being a gunner but I think not having a sword with you for close combat is just asking for trouble.

Forum Preferences, top right(ish) of page.

Also, if you type 0 in the subject box, it'll disappear from your post (like in this one)

gunner/sworder

If you're a gunner, then you should certainly read the Gunslinger Guide, although it's not perfect. You should also master the concept of damage (which is explained at the top of my sword guide).

Weapons: You'd like to have two (or more) weapons of different damage types, and use them on the correct monsters. For maximum damage output, neither type should be normal. But if you value flexibility over damage output, then one or both might be normal. The "default" normal gun is Valiance. It's a pretty nice weapon, actually.

Armor: In the later parts of this game, even the strongest armor lets through tons of damage. To stay alive, you must avoid getting hit. Therefore, most advanced players favor armor that gives them offensive bonuses, even at the cost of a little defense. As a gunner you should go for the Gunslinger line (if you want a good balance of offense and defense) or the Chaos line (if you want extreme offense and the cost of terrible defense).

Using only guns isn't a problem. With gun-switching you don't need to reload (you move slower while reloading) and if you get cornered, you can shield bump/bash the monsters surrounding you and escape. Gunners deal less damage than strikers (swordsman) and bombers but they stay away from the enemies and kill them from distance, without taking damage. That means your shield doesn't need to be strong.
I'd suggest Swiftstrike Buckler ( http://wiki.spiralknights.com/Swiftstrike_Buckler ) as your main shield because it offers great ASI (attack speed increase). Although its alchemy line ends at 3* and you'll need 4*, then 5* shield in order to pass Hall of Heroes. That's why you will need another shield, even if you don't use it...--> And here comes the second suggestion: KEEP your Defender. It's cheap and it sucks BUT it has a good (and unique) upgrade: the Heater shield ( http://wiki.spiralknights.com/Heater_Shield ). You can use Swiftstrike while upgrading the cheap Defender until it becomes useful (a.k.a when the 4* Mighty Defender becomes Heater Shield). As for armor, Justifer/Nameless/Shadowsun set offers gun ASI/Damage bonus ( http://wiki.spiralknights.com/Sets <-scroll down and see the sets I mentioned). These ^ are the "gunner armors". And finally, the most gunny-guns: all Alchemers (the best damage among all guns if used right, good at inflicting statuses), Valiance (easy and safe to use, decent damage, cheap and easy-to-get), Biohazard/Neutralizer (decent damage on regular attacks, great damage on their fast charge attacks, they can even reach Alchemer's damage, hard-to-get but it's worth it ;)
P.S:::Oh, I wrote all this after you said gunning is dangerous... Anyways, I hope I helped. Choose your "class" and Have Fun. The best class is the one that brings you most fun.

Thanks

Thanks for all the advice. I am officially a cobalt noob. Lol. I think the flourish looks nice. I might go swordsman after I get bored with guns. The only problem is how boring single player is.. and nobody ever has a party going on the levels I need to do.

guild

Join a friendly guid --- not an elite, competitive guild. When you're going to do a mission, announce it to the guild, and let everyone know that he is welcome. Don't beg people to come, or complain when they don't. If your guild is nice, and you are nice to them, then I bet that you'll get some company sometimes.

Enjoy the game!

Hey guys! I have another question. Should I upgrade my brandish or switch to a flourish?

no answer to such a question

Flourishes and brandishes are both good. You should read at least the first section (Basic Concepts) of my sword guide linked above. As it explains, the first consideration in choosing a sword is its damage type. Flourishes are piercing, whereas all brandishes are elemental or shadow. So they are not comparable.

For us to help you answer that question, we'd need to know more information, such as: What other weapon(s) do you have equipped? What parts of the Clockworks are you focused on right now (for example, Royal Jelly Palace)? What kinds of enemies give you the most trouble (for example, fiends)?

Gearless, are you Lt-Redace's alt?
If you'll focus on making guns, you'll need one sword for all situations. For example Leviathan blade is a great normal damage sword, part of your "full cobalt set". Its charge knockbacks everything so you can switch to your gun again and continue killing the monsters from distance.
If you still want Brandish or Flourish, I'd say get Flourish because the few piercing guns we have just suck.
It'd be good if you replace the Cobalt armor and helm with Gunslinger sash and cap because they (and their upgrades) offer speed increase and damage bonus for your guns.
Check the wiki about all items we list, if you don't know much about them. The Gunslinger Guide can help you choose guns.

I need a equipment set for lockdown. I am currently using-
Flourish
Cobalt helm
Cobalt armor
Defender
Blaster

What should I change? Could you suggest a variation for each class? (guardian, scout, invisible guy)

New Recruits takes precedence over Arsenal. This is more about basics of the game than specific weapon stats.

Where does it say New Recruits take precedence over Arsenal?

My question is- where should I go next? I need better stuff but I don't know what to get.

If he posted this in the New Recruits section, I wouldn't be surprised if you yell at him to move it to Arsenal.

The thread.

It isn't on the new recruits forum since it is based on my gear and arsenal. Which is what this forum is. I finally got around to reading the sword guide (I found Bopps to be immensely helpful) and I think I get that now. I got the damage concept and such before but the pages on the wiki helped me with a lot of the info on specific swords I was looking for. I need to finish the gunslinger guide now. :)
