I've been looking at a lot of screenshots and I gotta ask: How do most of you people live with low graphics settings?

Before you go accusing me of of being a graphics addict, no, I don't judge games by graphics. Please. I've been playing 16-bit platformers since I was 6 back in 2003.

But yeah, how do you guys take everything seeursly in low graphics? I have my PC set on high graphics and I get awesome smooth frame-rate that's 99% flawless, and my laptop (used for web derping and non-major SK things such as hanging out with peeps) runs on low graphics and if I set it to high, the FPS is all bad so I actually feel your pain if that's the reason. And in high graphics, you have lighting, shadows, 3D Clockworks and skydomes, can take things more seerusly and makes a more fluid feel to it, and ironically, despite HD making auras and other clutters, it actually reduces clutters and makes you more conscientious of your surroundings and how and when to attack/defend/dodge (that last part is from my viewpoint. Results may vary).

I really, REALLY don't want to hurt anybody who's computer can't run on high graphics. This is just a question that occurred out of thin air.

You already know why. My computer can run high graphics perfectly fine but I live too far away, every little bit helps.

My PC runs SK perfectly on

My PC runs SK perfectly on high with the effects option activated

I could even activate MSAA, but I don't care that much about jaggies

But my netbook.... god that thing runs at 15fps at LOW GRAPHICS

Although my rig is good enough to run: "Shogun 2 Total War" on ultra settings with smooth fps, it fails to do that in SK. I am not sure why, but I remember reading something about how SK is coded, and that it uses 1 core only. Still not sure, but I'd say it's a bad optimization?

You get used to it.

It makes you appreciate the spectacle of high graphics for when you do turn it on.

Although I now have a computer that can run Spiral Knights on high with no performance loss, I don't really notice the difference anymore. You do notice the difference a bit when you upgrade, and for a week or two after that, but then it becomes second nature, and you don't really care.

I'm the type of person who was using a Pentium III without internet up until 2008 though, playing games like Unreal Tournament 2004 with just bots, FATE, Heroes III, and Starcraft Broodwar.

EDIT: Goddamnit Traev, why you always gotta ninja me.

The game is the same. Guns shoot, enemies die.

Does the fun come from a fancy effect or from seeing everything die at your feet?

I tested this..

I've played this game with the max graphics... the mediocre and the least... and I've come to term... that IT DOESN'T MATTER! It's all the same in my eyes... then again... my left eye is short-sighted and my right eye is far-sighted... hmmmm... gotta find my glasses...

*goes to find glasses*

Let me explain. Spiral

Let me explain. Spiral knights needs good CPU cause the game can't use it properly. CPU usage. As you could think, the game uses all cores. That's right, but only partially. One thread may use CPU only step by step but first step can be execute on first core and the next on another. If we have few threads it's possible to make few steps at once. Theory. Task manager may show that all cores are woking, but they are not faster than single core. It's rather hard to parallelize applications and developers usually use only two threads, that's why Intel Core i3(2 cores) in many games works like Intel Core i5-7(4 cores). But let's go back to SK, it was written on Java, a high-level programming language, and it allows to create threads in existing code. If you don't believe me, google Optifine patch for Minecraft, this game uses Java too.
Examples of CPU usage:
Linx 1 thread.
Linx 2 threads.
Linx 3 threads.
Linx 4 threads.
PS i'm not computer scientist and don't have to degrees.

Speaking about Optifine, someone should do something like that with SK and pry to god it's gonna get accepted just like Sspy.

Low graphics settings aren't as bad as those crazy people who play low resolution 640x480

To Batabii

640x480 would be a viable resolution if the HUD scaled with resolution

I'm always on low graphics. High graphics slightly makes my laptop lag.

And btw Xtweeterx, you are starting to make too many threads. >_>

A silly pet peve

honestly who cares

some people may not have a good enough graphics card or computer to have high graphics on. anD DON'T SAY THEY SHOULD GET THOSE THEN. Then because you are being selfish for saying that they SHOULD be able to afford something that can cost a floopin' arm and a leg!

And I'm laughing so hard at the people saying that it runs slowly on low graphics. Yeah right. Lying in your talents or something? :P

But yeah, I usually like to have lower graphics in at times because i usually have web pages up and I'm running one or two other things while playing Spiral Knights, so yeah. "Close it all and just play SK!!" You say. Well, loading sometimes takes a while, I have to wait for people. I have homework, other people to talk to, things to do. I can multitask. What's wrong with that? Nothing.

So, yeah. It really doesn't matter who runs what type of graphics. It really should not bug you.

You know, it doesn't cost THAT much to get a decent GPU and CPU to run SK on high. I can run it on high smoothly (but unfortunately with graphical glitches due to HD Radeon card) and my GPU and CPU were $100 each, which isn't THAT bad.

Be careful, this post could include personal opinion!

@Xtweeterx But please don't cry if you get a warning by creating too many threads (spamming). I'm sure you would even create a new thread about that if that happens (how ironic). I believe there should be a weekly or 3 day thread limit anyway.

I have things set on high as much as possible, but there are missions where I regret it. SK is a pretty big CPU hog, and there are some really-unoptimized effects in there, so for something like Ghost in the Machine I can sometimes experience single-digit framerates. Not exactly fun.

.

I tended to go back and forth on my old computer, depending on the ambient temperature, how it was performing at the time, and how demanding the level is. The poor old thing has suffered some shorts in its time, and SK would cause it to have to kick up the fans pretty quickly (and the fans sound like they're working overtime playing this game), I had the very real worry of frying my computer if I didn't dial down the graphics on occasion. Playibility, and not destroying my computer took precedent over having the highest settings.

That said I can see where it is hard to ignore the lower graphics at times, the backgrounds are stitched together really awkwardly at times, and they clash a lot with things in the foreground, it could really jar me out of the game sometimes if the part of the background that is mismatched in skydome levels happened to pass by. I was still able to tune it out a lot though.

I do fall into those people that will play with the highest graphics possible. I find spiral knights to be an *extremely* aesthetic experience, I get such a sense of wonder from the backgrounds, and the creatures (and the music!) And since I've gotten a nice new computer I can enjoy them all the more now. Graphics won't make a game for me, but they are definitely a very very nice icing on the cake, especially when they are as imersive as SK's are for me.

... That's what I want in this thread; personal opinions. You think I'd explode if someone came up and said "Nah bro, SK just isn't my thing" right to my face? If you're a stalker person, you'd see I only create 0-2 threads a month (Maybe 1). So I do believe the irony is on you.

I have a GTX 660 TI and I still get some lag occasionally in some areas (last room of FSC D27, for one) while I'm playing on high graphics quality. I also get lag when I multi-client if I'm on high. I can't be arsed to reduce my AA, though :P

The question I want to ask is how do people live with 500ms ping +

Though honestly I'd use low graphics if it actually changed something that helps my framerate. Thanks to the recon "fix" my framerate dies when someone spams the cloak button on the opposite team regardless of quality.

Not saying I don't see a difference. Cryotech shots are near impossible to see in snowy levels on low quality ._.
