HARVESTER: The Reaper of Souls, Master of Apocrea
The first recorded encounter with Harvester was during the first years of the banishment of the Fiends. What follows is an account of said encounter, as dictated by a traveling merchant.
~~~
I was walking across a field of grass with my younger brother Dahse... It was nighttime, and we had lost our way traveling to a trading center... It was a new moon that night, so it was very dark... Our lanterns had burned out long before... While walking, we noticed a faint flash of purple light nearby... Looking for the source, we spotted the silhouette of a tall figure standing still... Abnormally long arms, wearing a shawl that covered its head... Darkness seemed to radiant from it... Against my warnings, Dahse walked towards the figure, believing it to be a local... Dahse had always been rather thick-headed... He figured that it could give us some directions... I reluctantly followed...
The figure turned to us, and I saw three glowing purple eyes beneath the shawl... Other than that, I could make out no features... However, there was something else beneath the shawl, causing it to ripple and move... I realized something was wrong, and called out to Dahse, who ignored me... All of a sudden, the figure's arms began to extend, as if they were growing... I could see them somehow, although Dahse couldn't... They covered the distance between it and Dahse quickly, who did not see the limbs in the darkness that grew as he drew nearer... It grabbed Dahse around the legs... He tripped and realized what was happening... He began to scream for my help in horror... Yet I was paralyzed with fear... It and dragged him back, screaming all the way, until the arms were back to their original length and Dahse was hanging upside down in front of the figure... Tendrils spilled out from beneath its shawl, writhing like serpents... Dahse's screaming grew and the figure lifted Dahse into its face... It blasted him with a cone of purple light, and I saw a great white orb slowly draw out of Dahse's body, and become absorbed into the being's tendrils... He was screaming the entire time, this time not in horror but in great pain... The light disappeared... Then it seemed to devour him, his body disappearing into the mass of tentacles along with his screams... It turned its face to me... Great masses of black tentacles burst out of the ground and dove at me... Only then was my spell of terror broken... I ran back the way I came, screaming and yelling... It did not pursue me...
It was only the following morning that I discovered that the trading center we had been looking for was just a quarter mile behind the being... Its bright lights blocked from our vision by the dark aura that surrounded the being... As if they had been absorbed by the shadows... I told the folks in the trading center about what had happened... They did not believe be, and called me a fool... I ran across the field, looking for proof of our encounter... There was nothing, except for a shard of black crystal where the figure had stood... It pulsed with a strange energy that made my mind reel... I pocketed it and showed it the those who had ridiculed me, but they identified it as a shard of obsidian... The energy had disappeared from it... I do not know what became of it...
It has been 30 long years since that happened... My friends called me mad... My family suspected me of doing away with Dahse myself, when they never saw him again... All shunned me... Until now... But from that day forward, my sleep was plagued... My dreaming eye drowned in a vast sea of nothingness... And I dreamed... Dreamed of cities where geometry and madness shared meaning... Cities where buildings grew and fell with my each thought... Built from the teeming filth of ages... Where dark machines and engines roared across the universe, powered by the harvested souls of the lost... Where the strange being that had taken Dahse ruled supreme, with a boundless reach... Dahse's screams still remain fresh in my mind... I sometimes think I can hear them echoing through the night, across distant stars... I fear I will not be rid of them as long as I live...
~~~
The merchant who told this story disappeared shortly afterwards, leaving nothing but a note behind.
~~~
Awakened by my story, finally come to light... The souls of the lost haunt my restless nights... They come forth in my dreams, my nightmares... Seeking refuge from the blinding gaze of the Apocrea, from their relentless scythe... They steal sanctuary in the cracks and corners of their terrible realm, yet it is ever fleeting... Fleeting, like the whispered screams of my brother... Obsidian is a weapon there, in the deep dark beyond... Beyond the space where time wakens and yawns... Beyond the shadows cast by the great leviathan of eternity... A great and horrible weapon... One that keeps them bound to that distant plane... Obsidian... I am off on a journey... The wails of the lost call to me... I do not suspect that I shall return...
A fierce Alpha Wolver imbued with the power of fire, Vog and his sister, Skolver, were created in the laboratories of the Luminarian scientist Faust. Using a contraption adapted from the cloning machines, Faust managed to turn an ordinary Alpha Ash Tail and Alpha Frostifur into much, much more.
There are no records of the life Vog led before he became Vog. What really matters is is life after. After successfully fusing a creature with one of the Status Elements, Faust released Vog and Skolver into the forest surrounding Luminaria. The two immediately split up (the two had never been on the best of terms with each other), Vog headed deep into the forest, inadvertently causing small bush fires with the flames that jumped off his pelt into the surrounding plants. It was there where he began to form his own small empire.
The process in which he became Vog also gave him high intelligence. He was no dumb beast, but rather cold, efficient, calculating, and deadly. He eliminated the Alphas of the Wolver packs that lived in the forest, and established dominance over them. He managed to pass on slivers of his power into those he commanded, turning them into what people call Vog Cubs.
When the Snarbolax left Luminaria and entered the forest to claim it as his own, Vog had already claimed as his own territory, so there was a bit of a standoff between the two mutated Wolvers. While Vog did have an entire army of Vog Cubs at his command, the Snarbolax had an impenetrable hide, and was also backed up by his adoptive mother, Skolver. In the end, they came to a compromise. Vog reluctantly let the Snarbolax take the forest as his own lair. In return, the Snarbolax agreed to not kill Vog and his Vog Cubs, and also let them have free rein inside the forest. He also let Skolver’s own pack of Skolvers make the Gloaming Wildwoods their home. But as for Vog, he would have to find a new place to call home.
And so Vog left the forest. Over time, the Snarbolax’s shadow spread through the trees. The plants began to grow wilder and larger. The Beasts that lived there became unnaturally savage and territorial. The trees blocked out all sunlight from entering the undergrowth, giving it the name ‘The Gloaming Wildwoods.’
Vog wandered the Clockworks, searching for a new lair. He eventually found a suitable home in the Mountains of Darkfyre (now called the Mountains of Shadow Fire), along the eastern borders of the kingdom of Almire. Vog went on the become the patron god of Almire, his fiery powers and ferocity fascinating the Almirians and turning him into a creature of legend. Shrines were built all around the mountains, in dangerous and hard to reach places where only the most devout worshippers would risk their lives to visit and perhaps catch a glimpse of Vog’s power.
However, all good things come to an end. Vog slowly lost his status as a god among the Almirians, degrading into a simple myth of times long ago. Vog felt lost. He seemed to have little to no purpose anymore, except as a character in children’s stories. At some point he visited his loyal pack in the Gloaming Wildwoods, seeing if they were in need of any help from him. But they did not, and Vog fell into a deep depression.
Then the world began to change. Lord Vanaduke became king of Almire, and started to train armies that Cradle had not seen the likes of since the Age of Titans.The Spiral Union was formed in order to counter the potential threat that Almire posed, and the War of Alliances began. Margrel allied the Kats with the Union, supplying them with blueprints to great weapons of war. The first energy-based weaponry and Aircraft were developed, obliterating the Almirian opposition. The Owlites joined the Almirians, providing magical support and some protection against the Spiral Union’s devastating new devices. Thus did Margrel’s War begin as well, the Kats finally declaring war on the Owlites over their magical knowledge.
Vog became a major part of Almire’s life once more, her people now turning to a mythical creature for hope. Ancient stories about his true power reemerged, and people began to pray to him, in the hopes that he would bring Almire victory. Weapons began to be developed in his fiery aspect, jagged blades capable of shooting fire and lances with blazing heads becoming a staple part of the Almirian troops’ equipment. Vog became their beacon of light in a dark place
After millennia of doing virtually nothing, Vog felt the need for some action on his own. He crept down from the mountains and began to terrorize the Union troops, setting entire camps ablaze and leaving behind only the burnt cinders of soldiers. He began to take part in the massive battles that began to drive deeper and deeper into Almire, taking on a massive form and rampaging through the Union and Kat lines. He also called his pack of Vog Cubs from the Wildwoods to his side, having them take part in mauling the Union soldiers. Many stories were told from Almirian soldiers of a pack of great Wolvers all wrapped in flame and bringing fiery death to their enemies. Morale began to fall in the Union armies. Although they were still winning the war, they were losing many thousands of troops during each battle, mainly due to the havoc Vog and his pack created. And they could not hurt them; their weapons, not matter how advanced, did not have enough power to penetrate their fiery pelts.
Then the tide changed. The Great Kataclysm occurred, apparently killing off the Kats and Owlites. The Almirians lost the much needed support of the Owlites, and had to fight much harder in the battlefield, with losses multiplying with each battle. The Union perfected energy-based weaponry, to the point where they could equip Aircraft with Energy Cannons powerful enough to even injure Vog. And injure him they did. In the Battle of the Citadel, a fleet of Aircraft dive-bombed the Almirians lines, severely wounding Vog. The majority of the Almirian army was lost that day, and the survivors had to retreat into the Citadel, where they would make their final stand the next night. Many Vog Cubs were also killed, and those who lived fled back to the Gloaming Wildwoods.
Vog, unable to do anything to help his people, retreated into the mountain to lick his wounds. He would have died if Monomi had not mysteriously appeared and tended to him, passing on nanites into him so that they could heal his horrible wounds.
Although Almire had been lost, her people hadn’t. Vanaduke had managed to escape from the Union forces; how, Vog did not know, but there was talk that the Valkyrie had arisen. The citizens of Almire who the newly dubbed Spiral Empire had allowed to live continued to pray to Vog that Vanaduke might someday return and reclaim his throne.
The years passed slowly for Vog. No one came venturing into his shrines and temples anymore, as doing so was now punishable by death. Then one day, a mad hermit entered one of Vog’s holy places, a cavern filled with ashes and a lone shrine in the middle. The mad hermit was Vanaduke, who had been wandering the Mountains for years, seeking a way to reclaim his kingdom. Vog infused Vanaduke with his fiery power, turning him into a monstrous creature, and summoned his army back from the dead (this special power surprise Vog quite a bit. He hadn’t been away he could do something like that), bringing them back as fiery demons. With an undefeatable army, Vanaduke marched on the Spiral Empire, conquering it in less than a day. Vog became a close advisor and friend to the reinstated Lord Vanaduke, keeping him and his undead warriors alive with his powers.
As of now, Vog has been missing for several years, disappearing from Vanaduke’s side several months after soldiers of the Spiral Empire reappeared. His current fate is unknown, but all signs point towards something to do with Swarm, as traces of his energy and signs of combat were found in Vog’s mountainous lair.
Notes: In-game lore states that Vog isn't a Wolver. Well screw that. This is my lore .-.
I'm just starting to use this thread now to advertise bits of my stories :U
The Punkin King:
The Punkin King was the second living creature to appear on Cradle. His origins are a bit of a mystery, known only to Monomi (who refuses to tell anyone). Some speculate that he was created from a primordial gourd-like plant being exposed to hard radiation, powerful amounts of energy, or some of Monomi’s nanites. Whatever the case, it is clear the the Punkin King was conjured from unique causes, as there are no others like him.
After having been created, the Punkin King wandered around the face of Cradle, before meeting up with Monomi (something to do with an erupting super-volcano and a recent meteor strike). They decided to explore the world together, and that’s what they did for many, many millennia.
When the Titans came to be, they worshipped the Punkin King and Monomi as gods. The Dark Harvest was created, in honor of the Punkin King. It was during this time the Punkin King would walk through the streets of the cities, meeting with the mortals. Part of the Harvest was the Titans carving effigies of the Punkin King from pale gourds they had grown and harvested (hence the name, the Dark Harvest), and letting the Punkin King imbue the effigies with life and power. These creatures, later known simply as Gourdlings, became his servants and warriors.
The Titans eventually died out. Monomi left the Punkin King, heading away to do her own business. But the Dark Harvest remained, celebrated by civilizations scattered around Cradle. Over time, the festivities involved with it evolved. The Punkin King began to hand out gifts to lucky mortals, most significantly candy (everyone likes candy). He eventually only handed out candy, tossing them into the masses and basking in their cheers. Then the competitions were created. Any person or group who could best him and his Gourdlings in simulated combat would earn a large batch of candy. Few could do this on their own, but those who did became heroes of sorts in their community.
More time passed. The Dark Harvest changed even more, into a hide-and-seek game. Sometime after the downfall of Almire and the return of Vanaduke, the Punkin King set up a base of operations in a peaceful Almirian Graveyard. He would now wander the Clockworks, fighting anyone who managed to find him. Candy was given if they defeated him, or if he was just feeling nice.
Then the Spiral Knights crashed onto Cradle. Having no grudge of any sort against them (he actually became quick friends with the Spiral Knight cook Biscotti) the Punkin King let them participate in the Dark Harvest festivities. However, their energy-based weaponry tore through him and his Gourdlings, obviously no match for them. They began to ‘farm’ the Punkin King, constantly on the search for him. Running out of Gourdlings and candy, the Punkin King began to produce a new type of Gourdling, with the help of a few young Gremlins. Mixed with the essence of Blast Cubes, these new Gourdlings were rather effective against the Knights, filled to the brim with organic explosives.
The Punkin King continues to reside in his little Graveyard, planning each year’s Dark Harvest and regrowing his Gourdlings. He finds it rather annoying when a Knight (or four) wander into his home and challenge him to combat, and blames the Strangers for telling them the location.
Notes: The source of the purple glow that emits from the Punkin King’s eyes and mouth is unknown. Some believe that is it given off by an internally energy source that is part of the Punkin King. This points towards the theory that the Punkin King was created through radiation or energy, the vestiges of the whatever energy that had brought him to life still present.
Let us begin another conversation thing!
Riddles!
You are in a room where there are three switches. A hallway outside the room leads into another room where there are three lightbulbs. Your task is to find out which switch turns on which lightbulb. You may stay in the switch room as long as you like, but once you enter the lightbulb room ou have 10 seconds to figure out which switch works which lightbulb. You may not go back to the switch room after leaving it. The rooms are positioned so that you cannot see the lightbulbs from the switch room. etc, etc.
How do you do this?
You turn the first switch on for a few minutes, then turn it back off. You turn the second switch on and leave it on. You leave the third switch off.
When you go into the lightbulb room, the lightbulb that is warm but off connects to the first switch. The lightbulb that is still on connects to the second switch. The lightbulb that is cold connects to the third switch.
You are in a room with two doors. You want to escape, but each door leads to death. One door leads to a room with a fiery dragon that will burn you to a crisp. The other door leads to a room with a glass lens ceiling that will crisp you like an ant under a magnifying glass.
How do you escape?
You go the the room with glass lens, then go back and wait for the glass lens to fall.
You are in a room with 3 halls. One leads to a lava pit, one goes to a room filled with beasts and the last one leads to the center of Earth's core with gravity pulling.
How can you escape?
Your answer is wrong, and I should probably add more details.
The dragon's breath is less real fire and more incredibly toxic due to his over-consumption of hot sauce. The glass lens uses the power of the sun to crisp you. There is also a door at the other side of each room, if you're able to reach it.
As for your riddle, Skyguarder, could you lead the beasts into the lava pit or the gravity hole and then escape?
@Snakemittens
Correct. You could lead the beasts into the lava pit, but not to the gravity hole / core. Once you go near it, you will be in the gravity hole with the beasts.
Riddle: You are trapped in a Dark Hallway with a ghost chasing you and found the door to escape. The door is iron and sealed. You only have a cake and have a chance of finding something.
What would you find in the cake? A wooden sword, a spark of life or metal?
Because Skyguarder did not give a link to a Wikipedia page, his last post has been disregarded.
This means Snakemittens' post (#426) was the last post. He made it on 10/29 21:39, and right now it's 10/30 17:52!
No one has made a legitimate post 20 hours after Snakemittens.
CONGRATZ!!!!
The prize goes to Mittens, but feel free to keep chatting. It is an experiment after all, not a contest.
I won? Cool! Does this mean that this is now a thread of riddles and random Wikipedia links? Also, ign: Snakemittens.
@Skyguarder: I'm not quite sure what the riddle is.
What gets wetter and wetter the more it dries?
/me claps.
You cook the outside and throw away the inside. You eat the outside and throw away the inside. What is it?
Woo, 4th page and this!
