This is for anyone involved with the game development, or anyone who wants to share their ideas or complaints. The Question: Would it be possible for Spiral Knights to appear on console? (Or do you want it on console)

Spiral Knights probably won't ever have a console port. IIRC, most consoles don't support Java, and that's the language Spiral Knights is programmed in.

I hear that the PS4 will have some Java compatible ports in their console. (If im not mistaken of course) Yet, didn't minecraft hit the marketplace last year? Isn't that made using Java aswell?

No.

There is no console currently out yet that supports Java, which is what Spiral Knights is run on. Unless the devs feel like wasting time away from developing new things for the game on recoding EVERYTHING just so we can play SK on a stupid box, I don't think so. If you're going to say something like, '' It'd be cool to play this game on my big tv! '' lemme just say this: It's called an HDMI cable. Don't have one? Buy one. There's another cable you can use as well, but I forgot the name, but basically, this question is just a flatout no. The only way I see this ever making it to a console is IF it's compatible with this:
http://store.steampowered.com/livingroom/SteamOS/
This, of course, will just be limited to people who use Steam, so if you aren't on Steam, sucks for you.

Theres a lot more to playing

Theres a lot more to playing a game on a big screen. And just because you don't like the idea of playing it on a stupid box, doesn't meen others wouldn't mind giving it a try. There are others that cant use a computer to play games on. But of course im not a techie nerd or anything so I wouldn't know the trouble of getting it on console. If its a flat out no then it a no, but how did Minecraft for example get on colsole?

The difference is that Minecraft has probably set some kind of record for sales numbers and popularity, while Spiral Knights is far more obscure. Also, Mojang sells Minecraft and has an incentive to see it distributed as widely as possible, while Spiral Knights is FtP and OOO doesn't have a incentive to distribute it. Mojang also has the resources to recode Minecraft, but OOO doesn't.

Minecraft had to be ported to C++ to run on xbox. And it's a dumbed down version that isn't up to date compared to PCs.

Another important difference is that minecraft games are hosted in different servers. There are different 'worlds'.
SK is one big MMO. You wouldn't be able to play with a friend on PC or viceversa.

Steam OS

It's an operating system that's supposed to be built up-to-par to handle all games available on Steam with a Linux engine. Many of the games will be directly accessible through the system while others will be streamed through the Steam Cloud. Basically, any game on your library will be playable on the system.
But that brings the problem that L-J brought up: People on the SOS will only be able to play with players on Steam rather than being able to play with everyone else (people who play directly from the site and Kongregate)

I don't know if you can with SK, but that still brings the point that this person would have to be a Steam player. I'm trying to tell him that so far, no consoles are available that even support Java except for maybe the SOS but even that's an uncertainty.

Alright but just because the game is open-world MMO doesn't make its un-able to run on console. I've heard of many open world games coming up on Next-Gen consoles. (Destiny for example)

That's not the point.

The point is that
1) In order to put it on any console that isn't compatible with Java, the entire coding of the game has to be converted and rewritten in order to work
2) OOO doesn't have that many paying players in order to fund that kind of project
& 3) It would only work with people who play it on that console (you wouldn't be able to play with people from the site or on Kongregate) which takes out A TON of players, so you'd have such tiny amount of people playing on it that it would just be pointless.

Think of it this way...

Would you rather have new content, or a console port?

Traevelliath is correct. A console port is not the top priority.

Especially since a console port would add no value to existing players. You get nothing new out of it.

Doesn't mean that a console port wouldn't (or couldn't) be a thing of the future, but it would be much further down the line. A lot of people want to see the new Arcade, the Core, the advancement of the storyline and bosses, improvements or additions to PVP.

It would be best not to distract them from the top priority (gameplay) than its distribution (console ports).

meh.

1. You need tons of money to get a game on a console.
2. You can play Spiral Knights on the Big TV screen with a VGA or HDMI cable

But which consoles will run Linux?

1) install a Linux distro on your console

2) Get a well supported openGL driver for its GPU

3) install java

4) ???

5) Profit!

The catch is being able to use Linux on your console

Anyway, console ports usually mean that the controls are significantly worse, bad anti-cheating protection-- shoot, doesn't anybody remember TF2's 360 port?

Although although although, Quake 3 shared servers between Dreamcast and PC, but also also also it's a different case.

It is a valid argument. Code-based support issues is the biggest obstacle a developer has to face when making a game cross-platformable.

'round and around we go....

if you want it on console, then do eet yourself

I could probably just google it though. If I was that interested. Which I'm not. I'll probably find out one day in my travels across the internet.

"Some people rather a controller. Why, I'll never know."

Some people rather a Keyboard and Mouse. Why, I'll never know.

Honestly, from my perspective, it's more comfortable than playing with a Keyboard, and I always grew up playing on Consoles than Mouse and Keyboard. It's just a generalized opinion on what you prefer.

With a wireless controller

With a wireless controller you can do more comfortable things like lay on a couch, bed, or just raise your legs and lean back in a nice comfy chair.

If OOO added highlights and scrolling for the menus and a way to access them easier then a controller would be easy to use.

I find no difference in

I find no difference in comfort between the two options.
I prefer keyboard due to the sheer ease of access to a vast array of input. Not to mention most keyboards are universal, while each controller can vary.
I find mice have not only better precision, but higher max speed than a joystick/toggle. With a controller, due to the limit on input (the edge of the toggle's reach) only one or the other is really possible.
And finally, I can achieve a higher level of reaction speed, duration precision, and repeats when my finger is facing down on an input device rather than lying across it.
Wireless connectivity is not solely exclusive to handheld controllers, if you weren't aware.

The Steambox (Valve's set-top

The Steambox (Valve's set-top console) is said to be running a custom Linux distro that will allow users to install other platforms aside from Steam, such as EA's Origin service (barf). I don't see why one wouldn't be able to install other games, such as the non-Steam SK client.

@Dirt

You're referring to Steam OS, not their console. I haven't looked into it too much but I'm guessing the Steambox is just more or less going to work as any PC which means that you should be able to install any OS you can install on any regular PC on the Steambox.
