Actually, they're not statues OF gunpuppies. Rather, the gunpuppies are weaponized instances of the dog statues. The gremlins discovered those strange statues —presumably left behind from some old, lost civilization— and, well, what do gremlins do? They bust 'em apart and reassemble them into something more... useful. You know, bolt a rocket launcher in there, add some whizzers and gidgits, and you've got a fine line of luxury home security turrets.
