A recent thread in New Recruits asked if we RP in Spiral Knights. My first thought was of the various RP games over in treasure vault, but after a little while I also though of games like Second Life and WoW where players are encouraged to RP within the game itself. I made a list of the biggest traits my character has, and asked myself what kind of picture they painted. Here's what I got:

Traits:
Collects and Accessorizes Military-themed gear.
Has an impressively large weapons collection, including a number of inefficient or useless items.
Advises and tutors new players, and sometimes goes into way too much detail.
Small friends list.
Knows exactly what to do in any situation, and has a complete understanding of the various monster's weak points and tactics.
Always has the right gear for a given situation.
Has a young, somewhat reckless protégé.

Here's what I interpreted that list to mean:
I've been role playing as a one of those crazy paramilitary dudes who lives in the middle of nowhere and stockpiles firearms in preparation for whatever he thinks he'll need them for. He tells anyone who will listen about all his gear and why he needs it, and tells them to build up their own stockpile so they'll be ready too. He has about 5 friends, and 3 of them are undercover ATF agents. He listen to Glenn Beck.

Or:

He's Batman.

How about you guys? Who have you been playing as all this time?

  • Collects gear for every conceivable situation
  • Has costumes and accessories from nearly every promo event
  • Likes to be dressed fashionably and elaborately
  • Laughs frequently and enjoys good humor
  • Rational, tactical, patient, and competent for every battle
  • Enjoys a good challenge

I dunno. Who am I? I feel like I should be some kind of villain. xD

I like to think of my Knight not as a "Spiral", but something of draconic origin (a.k.a. I like to think that Knights' gear are just shells, and there are all kinds of things behind them). I constantly wear dragon-themed costumes (almost always Scale Helm, rarely Arcane Salamander).

I do dragon things.

If you're a villain, then you sound like one of those "hunt your fellow man for sport" types. Cultured, well prepared, has the right skill set, and has a huge trophy collection.

Whimsy reportin' in. What do ya want?

Ruthless, headstrong, disrespectful to authority. Whimsy has an un-godly obsession with shock and poison themed weaponry, and excels in brutal, tactical assassinations. A reckless Recon Knight with an impish, playful attitude. They are notorious for referring to everyone as "kiddo". Often ignores orders to pursue what they feel is convenient, such as collecting accessory tickets or bashing Gremlin skulls. If not for their loyalty issues, they would otherwise be ranked higher in Recon squadrons. Regarded for their tactical assaults within their own ranks, but not enough to further themself up the ladder. Though not the smartest around, they must be doing something right to have survived for so long and to come so far. Seldom forms close friendships as their behavior often drives away many.

Their favored outfit, Crown of the Fallen plus Dragon Scale Mail with wings, resembles a "corrupt angel", serving as a symbol of how even the nicest and selfless can be consumed by pride and greed.

Something like that.

Show me the money, and i'll show you the guns.

Traits: A clever, sharp, funny, but an egotistical type of fellow who does it all for the loot. Blitz is a gun-loving mercenary who has a handgun for every situation possible, with an impressive resume of hunting down the Snarbolax, ending the Royal Jelly's regime, destroying the war machine Roarmulus twins, and has yet to defeat Lord Vanaduke, but he is on the top of his to-kill list. He is a dignified recon in LockDown sniping the nearest victim close to him and never says no to a fight especially if it's for the BIG BUCKS. The King of all gunslingers has recently been playing LD more of often due to his profound love of bombheads so that he can one day create a costume with a silver bombhead with a divine halo and a skolver coat with divine valkyrie wings and an energy canteen for good measure. But he does not do it all the time for money, he also is a great friend who will help anyone in need.

Traevelliath

Traevelliath is my alt that I use to post on the forums. My real account in-game is actually Anakletos.

An impulsive cleptomaniac, who seeks out any equipment that looks shiny... or at least did. Anakletos is long past his prime, too lazy/exhausted to follow the new trends and current meta. He often scoffs at Alchemer Switching, Chaos Cloning, and Brandish Charge Spaming. His mind is locked back in an age when the Arcade was a grand maze of excitement, adventure and wonder. But now? The Clockworks have lost their mysteries, for he has probed his nose (and blade) into every dark corner. No enemy is new to him, no obstacle is unfamiliar, no trial is difficult. Occasionally he drifts off, thinking about when he was the GM of a grand, thriving guild... a guild he long since abandoned to fall apart and fade away when he traded them for a more elite group of companions... who, in time, abandoned him. His sprite, a friendly Maskeraith, quietly drifts over his shoulder, there more for company rather than utility. With most of his friends long gone, his Maskeraith will give him someone to talk to, even when no one else wishes to listen.

However despite all of this, Anakletos carries on each day with an optimistic grin and a happy attitude. If you get him talking, he'll ramble on and on about his experiences, his ideas, and his golden days of old. He'll happily leap into danger to guide those who are lost, and make the stupidest risks for the sake of challenge. Money is never on his mind, unless it's between him and that shiny new gun he's been looking for. As a result he's generous with his gifts, and at times wasteful with his spending. The quest for efficiency has dissolved into a quest for entertainment.

its hard for me to even

its hard for me to even describe my character so i will use the description from the man himself

I'm the best ever. I'm the most brutal and vicious, and most ruthless champion there's ever been. There's no one can stop me. Lennox is a conqueror? No, I'm Alexander, he's no Alexander. I'm the best ever! There's never been anybody as ruthless! I'm Sonny Liston, I'm Jack Dempsey. There's no one like me. I'm from their cloth. There's no one that can match me. My style is impetuous,my defense is impregnable, and I'm just ferocious. I want your heart! I want to eat his children! Praise be to Allah.

Well ...
  • Wears Skolver all the time, though usually over something else
  • Names his Battle Sprites after anti-tank missiles
  • Switches between timed Brandish charges, gunning, and up-close-and-personal combat depending on how lazy he feels
  • Used to want accessories, but is too cheap to really care about assembling expensive ones
  • Crafts whatever he can get, but hates unique variants
  • Enjoys planning out events and sifting through data
  • Usually only speaks when he's telling a one-liner

Amaki has been around for far too long, and really only sticks around out of lack of interest in anything else and sheer bloody-mindedness. He prefers the routine over the unexpected, simply because it doesn't cause him any more trouble than he already has to deal with. He looks forward to the future, but not excessively: there will always be something else to kill. He knows just about everything there is about the world he's in, even if half of it doesn't really affect his life. He is both enthralled and repulsed by chaos, not really getting excited (except on particularly momentous occasions) but never precisely bored either. His definition of overkill is precisely enough to kill, if he has any definition of the word at all. He analyzes risks and doesn't take any challenge he isn't certain won't benefit him. Most of his friends (he's not sure if he really has any, and doesn't care all that much) seem to like him, but know not to irritate him beyond a certain point.

Kind of like me, only somewhat cooler. Maybe.

LOL at Batman!

I like Military, Regal, Cool, Prismatic, and Divine. (I'm Prince Harry?)
Shiny weapons, yeah. Some with use even! (Better blunt them, else I'll stab myself in the foot.)
Will chew people's ears off (new or not) when in the mood. Not give a 2nd glance when not. (The contrast has me think 'Maniac Depressive'.)
Moderate friend list, what with hanging on to inactives, and easily deleting new ones when they do stuff I don't like. (Living in the past?)
Usually confused about what's going on.
Gear again, yeah. Got gear. Shiny, and blunted.
I most often play with a friend who's even more confused than I. Quote: "I don't remember yesterday." (I call us Laurel and Hardy.)
I have my own forest!

Oh, and I also have a Thing called Fatso. (Bobbing around next to my head and laughing at me usually.)

I've been playing a, eh, rich version of myself? How lame.

Much better interpretation: Runaway nuthouse inmate who merely imagines all the shiny stuff. Haunted by an imaginary bobble.

Oh, this looks fun!

Fangel is an angel cast down from heaven to guide and protect knights through their various journeys. She is a very reliable support role in any party, but can hold her own in a fight. Often, she will start wandering the clockworks alone and stumble across a knight who is alone, or in a group, and she joins them in their trek through the maze of machinery.

Not to be found penniless, Fangel will give away materials that she has an abundance of (i.e., every 0, 1, and 2 star material) with little thought to coin. She looks for value in a knight before blindly giving anything away. Demanding an item or service will turn her away more often than not.

She's a fun-loving angel, and finds great distaste for vulgar language and excessive complaining(it's beyond me how I'm able to read these forums without spitting a few times). She does try out an occasional game of lockdown, playing a key role of capturing points, distracting the other team, and refusing to spawn camp.

This is starting to drag on, so I'll stop here. Basically, I'm a support player who can fill the offensive role if need be. I like to be helpful, and generally make the community a better place, one kind word at a time.

Well why the heck not
  • Has every bomb and piece of bomb-related gear.
  • Picked the crappy sprite ultimates nobody liked to see if he can make them work. (He mostly can't, they're crap.)
  • Mostly do clockwork expeditions for the sake of gathering scientific data, but occasionally heats latest piece of crappy gear nobody likes.
  • When not feeling lazy, will avoid optimal gear for the sake of trying out different things. Is not actually skilled enough to do this and spark supply recently dipped down to double digits.
  • Is loathe to actually do administration of own guild.
  • Is a bear.
  • Spaces out for great lengths of time while analyzing and filling in spreadsheets.

Think it all pretty much speaks for itself. Clearly your standard eccentric scientist.

  • Likes cats. A lot.
  • Follows some wacky bear around often.
  • Struggles to find his most preferred Lockdown style, probably because he can't be arsed maintaining two trinket slots and is thus almost always disadvantaged.
  • Is a fan of facial hair.

Works well with swords
Struggles using guns and rarely uses bombs
Hates poison and shock so much
Gets lucky and unlucky with UV's (2 UV's on the full fused demo set and 1 bad UV for Fractured mask of seerus.)
Loves battle sprites and gives them the best of mats (5* mats)
Can have a short fuse
Loves to battle all bosses
Loves having tons of HP

More of an offensive player except from certain places where he uses guns and bombs even then, only 1 area occurs (The unknown passage). Most formidable quote "/"sleep" SSS... /wake up BOOM!"

Good idea! :D

I had planned from the start to use my knight as a kind of RP character, although I don't interact much with other knights.

-Prefers distanced attacks, but will use a sword when there are a lot of enemies.
-Tends to get swamped and killed when using melee attacks; they are not her forte.
-Likes to wear default armor as her costume, but does equip more practical gear for armor.
-Kind of a slow learner of techniques, but once she gets the hang of something she never forgets it.
-Quick learner when it comes to recognizing patterns and traps.
-Not very talkative; doesn't have many friends. Mostly this is just because she's usually on missions and "ain't nobody got time for that!"
-Refers to other knights as "chumps" (except for friends) but never out loud in order to avoid offending anyone. Most people rub her the wrong way. She dislikes knights who derp around, lag behind, and hold up the party. You gotta prove yourself to get to "non-chump" territory.
-Loves her Seraphynx but doesn't remember to use it very often.
-When joining a party, she likes to stick with her teammates and cover their backs (even though she secretly considers most, if not all, of them to be chumps.) However, she still hasn't figured out how to revive a fallen party member.
-Always targets those pesky enemy-healer types first, often at the cost of her own health.
-Seeks to bestow her useless junk upon unsuspecting noobie chumps in need of "better" gear, but since most of her items are bound to her this may prove a challenge.

I've never given it conscious thought,

But my character looks very much like a regal, angry, gold-plated Dragon. People think I'm greedy because my ign is kaisu-Dragon and "kiasu" means "hates to lose" or "greedy". Which is oddly fitting since I'm using storm armor.

It's a very heavy coincidence, but I'm willing to accept that as my character design. I think it's neat that things turned out that way.

So, Dragon under my knight's helmet. Ironic.

This looks fun. I’ll give it a try.

Mawashimono began playing Spiral Knights the months it debuted in April of 2011 when she and a friend were looking for a game they could play together online.

She adopted the nickname “The Dragon Princess” at the beginning of the Year of the Dragon in 2012 to celebrate that auspicious year and for her fondness for the dragon-line Radiant Silvermail that comprises her signature look.

She has a defensive style of play, patiently avoiding damage and deaths with Maximum Unique Variants on all the multitude of various helms, armors and shields that she utilizes. She also generally has VH damage weapons for each monster she faces in each level of the Clockworks.

In April of 2012 she began a fashion appreciation thread of some renown.

She started and built the mentoring guild Lionheart, which has grown to near 300 members since its founding on October 25th, 2012. Her position in the guild entitles her to the enjoyment of meeting, and in some cases mentoring, new and old players alike. She is also the administrator of its website .

The infamous Guild Master of a guild she left in distaste was accidentally overheard as describing her thusly: “She comes off as polite at first, but man, she is psycho-nuts under that layer.”

Members of her guild describe her in much more positive terms, and she has, on more than one occasion, been called the “nicest” and “best Guild Master ever.”

She enjoys art and has commissioned several pieces for her character. .

She has also won prizes for fashion and fiction in several Spiral Knights contests. Her writing can be found in the Treasure Vault here .

In summary:
Mawashimono, the Dragon Princess, has been a socially active member of the Spiral Knights community since its debut, and has amassed a fair of amount of friends and funds while enjoying the game equipped with her Lionheart Honor Blade in Haven, in the Clockworks, the Forums, and as Guild Master of Lionheart.

Chirthorpe was originally a

Chirthorpe was originally a childish, inexperienced knight who was very explorative and took everything as it came. He would grab ahold of almost anything he sees and fight any creature he comes across. Except, that is, for the Devilites. For some strange reason he has an instinctive fear of the Devilites and find that they tend to leave him evacuating to haven after being hit too many times.

However, after the Danger Event, he changed somehow. He lost his smiley eyes and became determined, and he matured as a Knight. Chirthorpe has become ruthless, and a tad reckless as well. He shows mercy to none, be they beast, slime or other. However, he still has an issue with fiends. But not as much - now, his real beef is with Greavers. His faithful companions are Meistermind the Maskeraith, and Reneire the Dracor.

Strangely, since coming into a large sum of money he has also gained a bit of a greedy personality and debated playing the Energy market to increase his funds.

*clears throat*

Midnight Dj was born with a severe opitical as well as neural degeneration diseases(one bar latency that is). These defects affected his combat... but he worked hard and earned the rank he deserved, he is determined(determined eyes that is) to be a vanguard at a young age. His captain advised him to get a set of shadow armor. So he decided to make a set of angelic raiment, despite being burnt to char by the fire fiends, he marches on and finally made a set of valkyrie set. He is now the most beautiful Valkyire in the town, many called him 'G@Y' for wearing it but since he is an attention wh0re, it is good for him.

He continued to strive even after his vanguard ceremony, he tried few times enter the recon rangers but Desna rejected his app. Saying that he was too young. So he grinded in RJP and FSC for about 500 and 150 times (and puked about 20 times during the run due to how boring it was). After 1 and half years relentless grinding. He collected all the gears neccesary to complete all four danger missions, Desna finally accepted him after witnessing he spent 100K of his own money to buy a set of second-hand recon ranger armor. The armors, of course, belongs to a female ranger who got crushed by a deanought.

He now leads teams of regular knights (you) through the danger missions, scouting and provide covering fire (mostly covering fire since he doesn't want to die.) Often encourage his teammates ( 'GG', 'GJ guys', 'Keep it up', 'well done people') And on a few occasions, break a few jokes to cheer up the crew [ LoA: may the souls rest... IN PIECES! GitM: GLADOS... is that you? C42: (none, coz this one is too intense even for him) HoI: MAULOS! That was for the 25 SoLs I wasted on elite mode!]

He worships his guild master Hcastanchrio (if I spelt that correctly...), who is a pro, and saved him on many occsions during danger missions as well as normal missions. Midnight never donate any money to the guild, only furniture mats, so that is why till today he is still a member. ( I am suprised that he doesn't care whether or not I donate.)

However, Midnight HATES noobs who are too weak to fight for themselves, on many missions, he pooped on newbies for their incompetence (srsly, who wouldn't?) And he never give beggers anything or carry someone through a mission... His pet is a maskeraith called 'Zeratul', who he named after a famous Protoss dark templar.

Morality-wise, Midnight is neither good or bad, the world is not always black and white, more of a red blue in his opinion. He fights for what he believed in and noone is going to change that. For weapons, he only crafted the ones that really mattered, the Trolaris, the blitz, and the sentenza. The holy trinity of fire arms and uses a CIV, shiver mist, master blaster and an acheron as side weapons (yep, I only got 7 weapons for the whole clockwork.)

So this is Midnight, the cross dressing one bar latency knight...
