Or maybe instead of trying to turn tank sets into damage dealing sets in another form, make them actual tank sets?
+Block ability. Figure this can go on page 2 in case people skip to the second page.

There should be a -1 on all offensive armours(maybe)
Then I think defensive armours should be buffed to high status resist, and defense.
Chaos shold have more weaknesses and the freeze resist shoukd be removed off wolver.
And the plate armor should have the slowness reduced.
The drake scale's shock resist should be lowered but it should be almost completely resistant for fire.
Divine an grey feather also need some buff too
Just about all weapon/armor buffs/nerfs focus on PVP ISSUES!!! Spiral Knights is a PvE DUNGEON CRAWLER, AND NOT AN ARENA BATTLE-GAME. Most of the posts I see here refer to PvP, and not PvE.
Tanky sets are tanky, but not enough to fit the role to a tee.
If you must be such a self righteous hipster, go Jarvan mid, gosh.
Edit: Apparently the other two plate sets DO have typed resistance. Just the ancient set is severely gimped. Still, I think +block ability would make them actually used.
If players can clear areas in the game then there clearly isn't an urgent or game breaking reason to balance armor but I do agree they could use balance.
Ancient has far more normal defence and health than the other two plate sets. Considering the set is 30k per piece, cheaper than Azure, I don't see how that makes them "gimped" in comparison to other plate sets.

Damn, I would like to see that implemented.
I have to say that I find it odd how they only used the same things over and over on the armours. Would be nice to see new features like knockback/flinching resistance as you mentioned, and maybe instead of just giving the ancient set sword damage high; give it heavy sword damage high? To encourage heavy guardian type of play with that armour. Right now, there's not really any reason to specifically use plate armour with slow heavy weapons. Even though Izola stands in the Hall of Heroes looking all boss with that guardian title and all... Also, imagine if skolver/wolver lines only gave sword damage to either light or medium swords. And maybe volcanic plate could have just 50% resistance to knockback/flinching?
And for all that is sacred, give someone a reason not to use wolver or chaos for everything.
I mean, they did it with the striker booster in Lockdown...
