Hey. Most of you guys probably know me by now. No, I'm not new. I was just wanting to hybrid between gunning (Which is what I do know.) Since I have very little experience in bombing, I wanted to ask you pro bombers (Especially you Zeddy.) what bombs compliment guns the best?
Want to Hybrid Between Gunslinging and Bombing
Personally I would advice Voltaic Tempest and Dark Briar Barrage. The first one will help you with Kats (which I always found awkward to deal with using handguns), the latter will speed things up in Wolver Dens and beast arenas, especially since none of piercing guns we got so far (this will probably change soon) is efficient against crowd of weaklings like beasts.
After playing as almost pure gunslinger for ages, at some point I started to craft bombs, and although I use many of my bombs occasionally (for sake of diversity), those two I've mentioned above had replaced guns for good in my loadouts.
I would go Shivermist Buster or something that stops the target from moving so you have a more accurate shot.
Shooting things down and blowing stuff are what I love most! Swords are boring... This question and answer would depend on how many trinket and weapon slots you have. I will just list items in order of top priority to less needed items.
Handgun - Biohazard / Neutralizer (Basically just long ranged bombs. Biohazard would be more useful for it's shadow damage)
Bomb - Shivermist Buster (Gives you a good way to defend yourself and a bit of elemental damage)
Handgun - Polaris / Supernova ( Even more long ranged gun bombs! If you feel having 2 slow handguns is a bit much take a gun of your choice)
Bomb - Scintillating Sun Shards (Makes wolvers and devilites a lot easier. Also good for when you just need tons of explosions down NOW!)
Helmet - Shadowsun Stetson (Gives useful shadow and poison defense as well as damage bonus medium for your gun bombs)
Armor - Volcanic Demo Suit - (Elemental and fire resistance along with much needed charge time reduction for your actual bombs)
Shield - Omega Shell / Scarlet Shield / Swiftstrike Buckler (Shell for all around defense, Scarlet for a small health bonus, Swiftstrike for handgun attack speed bonus.)
Trinket 1 - Elite Bomb Focus Module (Even more needed charge time reduction for bombs. Take a heart pendant or defense trinket if you cant get this)
Trinket 2- Elite Trueshot Module (Even more damage bonus for handguns. Take a heart pendant or defense trinket if you cant get this)
Sprite Perk - Swift Steps II ( Movement speed increase will be extremely useful while both bombing and gunning)
________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Now lets look at the overall results this layout would give you. I will go with the thought you chose a swiftstrike as it will be the most offensive choice of the 3 shields and that's what a bomber / gunner needs most.
Bombs: Charge Time Reduction Very High to Maximum! when you get the bombs to level 10.
A semi-but-not-really-useful attack speed increase of high. At least your getting bombs down 0.001 seconds faster!
Handguns: Damage Bonus Very High
Attack Speed Increase High
Overall Defense: 15 points of Normal Defense
6 Points of Elemental Defense
6 Points of Shadow Defense
High Poison Resistance
High Fire Resistance
Max Health is 8 to 10 once you get the armor leveled up to 10
Passive Bonus: Movement Speed Increase Medium

Wow, that was my longest post ever. But I hope that it helps you out at least a little bit! Feel free to change around some items if you feel a diferent style would fit you. This is just my take on a good bomber and gunner set without the risk of a Chaos Cloak or Cowl.
Except I'm already using a shadowsun slicker. Eh. Volcanic bombing helm will do.
And trinkets take ages to earn >.>
If you want to make an effective hybrid loadout, you really need either trinkets or UVs. Otherwise you'll have too few bonus, and end up with everything be lackluster, or just relying on one weapon type over the other. For me, a good hybrid loadout and a gunner with a bomb (or a bomber with a gun) are two different things.
I've never liked hybrid bomb loadouts myself, because bombs aren't really meant to be quickly swapped between. It's quite possible to do, but because you need to charge them, they cant really be quickly switched to and then deployed without lots of CTR. Most of the best bomb hydrbid loadouts that I've seen rely on a bomb to set up a damaging attack. The classic example of this is a vortex bomb into an Alchemer charge shot. Other good combos are like Shiver/VT into Blitz Charge, or Vortex into a Catalyzer charge detonation (I'm personally not a fan of catalyzers unless you're solo, because allies will often kill the target you set up a lot of charges on). Usually this sort of stuff is done with two people (For example, Shiver + Blitz vs Vana), but if you're able to get enough Bmb CTR and/or Gun CTR, it's quite possible to do it all yourself.
Venom Veiler compliments everything without added disruption to you or your party's gunning. It can be added on top of any Shiver or AoA users.
You will probably want Chaos + Shadowsun Slicker + Swiftstrike. Guns need damage, bombs need CTR, and chaos is the only gear that'll provide both. Equip 2 penta trinkets instead of additional bonuses. Pet perk can either be status that you don't want a huge weakness over or more gun damage.
My thoughts:
- Venom Veiler (CTR Low or better)
- Polaris / Magma Driver (ideally with ASI Med or better)
- Umbra Driver (ASI Med or better) / Blitz Needle
- Dark Retribution (CTR Low or better)
This allows your bombs to hit CTR+5 DMG+2, which is good enough for their roles. Guns will be at DMG+4, ASI+3 with swiftstrike or better with modest ASI UVs.
Your greatest DPS will come from layering Venom Veiler with Dark Retribution, both of which are welcome additions to party runs since they are not disruptive which can be a pretty big thing for people with bombers in their parties. From there I would probably main Magma Driver to spread fire damage or Polaris for particularly difficult situations. Umbra/Blitz for the other damage type, most likely Blitz for the most part since you'll have DR for shadow damage.
Hey, been using a gunslinger/bomber hybrid loadout since 2011. Usually 2-3 guns + 1-2 utility bombs, depends on what you're up against. This is mainly a DPS loadout, and not 100% support. Sorry about the wall of text.
Useful Helms:
-Perfect Mask of Seerus -> Gun CTR Med + Gun ASI low. Normal/Elemental Defense, Shock/Fire Status protection, Freeze/Poison Status weakness.
-Shadowsun Stetson -> Gun Damage Med. Normal/Shadow Defense, Poison Status Protection.
-Chaos Cowl -> CTR Med and Damage Med for everything. Normal/Elemental Defense, Shock/Fire/Freeze/Poison/Curse Status weakness. Risky to use.
Useful Armors:
-Shadowsun Slicker -> Gun Damage Med. Normal/Shadow Defense, Poison Status Protection.
-Volcanic Demo Suit -> Bomb CTR Med. Normal/Elemental Defense, Fire Status Protection.
-Chaos Cloak -> CTR Med and Damage Med for everything. Normal/Elemental Defense, Shock/Fire/Freeze/Poison/Curse Status weakness. Risky to use.
Note: I recommend Volc Demo Suit over the helm, because you can run Seerus + Volc Demo Suit + Crest of Almire for a nice FSC set.
Useful Shields:
-Ironmight Plate Shield -> Sturdy Normal/Piercing Defense, Stun Status Protection.
-Grey Owlite Shield -> Sturdy Normal/Elemental Defense, Fire/Shock Status Protection.
-Crest of Almire -> Sturdy Normal/Shadow Defense, Fire/Shock Status Protection.
-Swiftstrike Buckler -> High ASI for everything, Weak Normal Defense. Risky to use.
Trinkets + Battle Sprite:
-Penta-Heart Pendant -> +6 HP. Always have one of these Equipped.
-Elite Trueshot Module -> Gun Damage Med, with guns you really want to have max damage.
-Sprite: I recommend switching between Gun Damage/CTR/ASI Med, Bomb CTR Med or MSI Med. depending on your needs.
When you want to focus on switch shooting, run Max damage + Ultra ASI. When you want to focus on your blitz needle, Run Max damage + CTR.
Remember that Weapons get Medium CTR at heat level 10.
Must have Guns:
-Nova Driver -> Pure Elemental Damage. 2 Shot clip, bullets can ricochet up to 2 times. Very powerful charge attack, if used right.
-Umbra Driver -> Pure Shadow Damage. 2 Shot clip, bullets can ricochet up to 2 times. Very powerful charge attack, if used right.
Note: These two guns are your main weapon core, you want to switch shoot with them, i suggest you look up a guide c:
I also suggest that you pick up a Storm Driver, its a pure elemental gun that works the same way as the Nova Driver. It deals slightly less damage, but it can inflict the shock status. (Higher chance on the charge attack.) If you're up against undead, and want damage, swap out the umbra for a Nova + Storm Driver Core. Having Decent ASI is very important to switch shooting. Try to get ASI Med on your alchemers.
If you land it correctly, a max damage charge attack from a nova driver can OHKO lumbers/Gun puppies etc.
-Blitz Needle -> Pure Piercing Damage, 6 x 2 Shot clip. The Charge attack has a ridiculous damage output. Can outrange devilites <- Abuse this.
Useful/Situational Guns:
-Hail Driver -> Pure Elemental Damage, See note on alchemers above. Useful For soloing/pvp. Remember Freeze doesn't work with other status effects.
-Polaris -> Pure Elemental Damage, 3 shot clip. Useless charge attack. The North Star, Polaris... oh how i love and hate this gun. look up a guide.
-Argent Peacemaker -> Pure Elemental Damage, 6 Shot clip. Nice Charge attack for taking out turrets etc. More of a swordie sidearm.
-Sentenza -> Pure Shadow Damage, 6 Shot clip. Very nice for OCH, or dealing with other gremlins in general.
-Callahan -> Pure Piercing Damage, 2 Shot clip, can inflict stun. Useless charge attack. Can knock down wolvers, inferior to the Blitz Needle IMO.
-Valiance -> Pure Normal Damage, 3 Shot clip, very nice knockback on its attacks. More of a Support weapon. <3
-Biohazard -> Pure Shadow Damage, 3 shot clip, can inflict poison. Its projectiles are very slow. Very good when soloing, uh look up a guide on this guy.
-Plague Needle -> Copy/Paste blitz needle, lower damage output, can inflict poison. Works for someone, i prefer Blitz's damage output over this.
Nono Guns:
-Iron Slug -> Copy/Paste normal damage callahan. It has a neat knockdown, can also interrupt turrets. Its just not worth crafting. Buff me please D:
-Supernova -> Copy/Paste normal damage Polaris. No real reason to use this over Polaris or Valiance.
-Volcanic Pepperbox -> Copy/Paste normal damage blitz needle with half the range. can inflict fire. Blitz's advantage is its range, this one is useless.
-Neutralizer -> Copy/Paste normal damage Biohazard. Inferior in every way.
-Magma Driver -> The last member of the elemental alchemer family, sacrifices up front damage for a chance to inflict fire. The reason i don't recommend this guy is that its inferior to the Nova Driver in every way. Nova Driver has higher damage output even with the fire. The only upside to this gun is that it can thaw ice slimes by setting them on fire. We're using Ashes of Agni to do the same thing anyway.
Now then, onto bombs. I'm not going to talk about the blast or shard bombs, these are only really useful to a pure bomber.
Must have Bombs:
-Electron Vortex. <- You will be using this guy a lot. It has really good synergy with Alchemer and Blitz Needle charge attacks. Note, this guy slows you down when you charge it up, so i recommend lots of bomb CTR when you use it. It sucks everything into a vortex, and squeezes them together in a merry go round of electric doom. After a few seconds it will explode, sending monsters everywhere, can inflict shock. Note: shocked enemies resist the knockback from its explosion. You want everyone to use a charge attack on the piled up monsters.
-Ashes of Agni -> Elemental damage Haze bomb that sets everything on fire. No reason to use a magma driver over this guy. Its amazing for arenas, and dealing with big hordes of mixed enemies.
-Dark Briar Barrage -> Piercing damage blast bomb with no knockback. You will learn to love this guy.
-Dark Retribution -> Shadow damage bomb. Amazing against big hordes of jellies/gremlins. A certain slimy monarch doesn't like this bomb.
Note: These are the 4 must have bombs in my opinion. They make up for a gunslingers lack of AoE damage.
Useful Bombs:
-Voltaic Tempest -> Elemental Haze Bomb that inflicts shock. I personally prefer the electron vortex. Derps Kats.
-Venom Veiler -> Elemental Haze Bomb that inflicts poison. Negates healing, increases damage taken, and reduces damage done by monsters.
-Shivermist Buster -> Elemental Haze Bomb that inflicts freeze. So, the big Shivermist Buster. IF used properly, it can make a joke out of almost any monster/boss. For a DPS loadout, you don't want to be the guy who's freeze locking vanaduke when you have a max damage Blitz Needle. Bring this if noone else has one, and you really need it. Note: Freeze does not mix well together with Shock or Fire status conditions. Poison is alright though.
-Stagger Storm -> Elemental Haze bomb that inflicts stun. This bomb can potentially be very dangerous for your party, because it makes monster's attack patterns really unpredictable. Stunned monsters can only perform the first hit of their combo attack while stunned though. Derps Kats.
-Graviton Vortex -> Copy/Paste shadow damage Electron Vortex that can't inflict shock. I'm just going to say straight up that its inferior to the Electron Vortex. However it is easier to obtain, Since you don't need krogmo coins to get the recipes.
TLDR: General FSC Set.
-Perfect Mask of Seerus.
-Volc Demo Suit.
-Crest of Almire/Swiftstrike Buckler.
-Penta-Heart Pendant for HP.
-Elite Trueshot Module for damage.
-Pet Perk: Gun CTR Med
-Nova Driver <- Probably the highest damage elemental gun, charge attack makes quick work of gun puppies.
-Storm/Hail Driver (run this over an umbra driver, shadow damage is useless in FSC and the shock/freeze is nice against zombie hordes.)
-Blitz Needle <- Pew pew Vanaduck with this.
-Electron Vortex <- Electric merry go round of doom, zombies love this thing, and so will you and your party.
This set gives you good defense + fire resist, Max Gun CTR, Med Gun damage, Low-VH Gun ASI and VH Bomb CTR.
The idea is that you switch shoot the Alchemers, or spam charge attacks if you're only bringing one. The Electron Vortex really makes this set work, it will vacuum the zombies n stuff into a neat little ball that you can then fire off a charge attack at with a gun thanks to your CDR.
TLDR: All Round, Glass Cannon Set.
-Chaos Cowl
-Chaos Cloak
-Swiftstrike Buckler
-Penta-Heart Pendant
-Elite Trueshot Module -> Max Gun damage.
-Pet Perk: Gun ASI Med
-Nova Driver
-Umbra Driver (Switch out for Storm Driver on undead/fiend levels)
-Blitz Needle (only use the charge attack, it can even outrange devilites.)
-Bomb that you need: Electron Vortex, Ash of Agni, Dark Briar Barrage or Dark Retribution.
This set is amazing if you are good enough to avoid getting hit. It gives you Max Gun damage, Max Gun CTR, Ultra Gun ASi, Max Bomb CTR and VH Bomb Damage with no UVs. Elemental, Shadow and Piercing damage guns for coverage. AoE/Control Bomb to solve gun weaknesses. Risky to use.
TLDR: Safer, Gunslinger Set.
-Shadowsun Stetson/Perfect Mask of Seerus depending on what you need.
-Shadowsun Slicker
-Ironmight Plate Shield, Grey Owlite Shield, Crest of Almire or Swiftstrike Buckler depending on what you need.
-Penta-Heart Pendant
-Elite Trueshot Module -> Max Gun Damage
-Pet Perk: Gun ASI/CTR, Bomb CTR depending on what you need.
This set grants you VH-Max Gun Damage, None-VH ASI for Guns, Med-Max Gun CTR and Med-VH Bomb CTR. This set is very similar to the glass cannon set, however you don't have all those status weaknesses or weak shield in exchange for some of your damage. You could alternatively use Argent peacemaker + Sentenza as your gun core if you run no attack speed. Keep in mind that Alchemer charge attacks are really powerful.
This took way to long to write. Hopefully this can help you to choose the right gear.
-Leaf
I really wouldn't be able to tell you if you're primarily gunning. I guess shivermist and vortexes work well with Blitz? Alternatively, just get Nitro. You can use your gun for single targets and Nitro for crowd control and AoE damage. You might want at least one piece of Chaos for doing this.
For primarily bombing, I like to bring Firotech Alchemer, but frankly any gun will do.
