You know what would be cool? 1st person gameplay on spiral knights. I know it's a lot to ask for, but it would be pretty neat.
1st Person Gameplay
But this isn't CoD or Halo. Nothing at all like either of them.
This game is 3rd person for a reason you know. Ever though about trying to fight the Roarmulus Twins in 1rst person mode? How about finding out where lava will be in Fire Storm Citadel? What about all those times explosives found in the clockworks turn out more useful then dangerous because you knew where it was before you fired that alchemer shot?
We are in an era where first person games rule the minds of gamers. That's why I like games such as Spiral Knights. It brings out the little bit of what video games were originally suppose to be. Not blood fest where you can "live" the action with hyper realistic graphics while screaming YOLOSWAGIKIKICKEDURBEEP! into a microphone only to rage quit seconds later because of a stray grenade.
A long range shoulder camera would/might be good
this game is not 3D. only the characters, NPCs and the monsters are 3D. all the artwork for the clockworks and heaven is 2*. if you managed to turn the camera 90°, the vertical walls wouldn't be there.
And thus Thunder pointed out the obvious flaw with this suggestion that immediately shuts it down.
Those flaws can be easily fixed.
Changing the 2D background to a cubic/dome worldmap
The hidded meshes(meshes that cannot be seen by the player due to obstruction by other meshes) in games like these can be re-added.
And the texture and model qualities can be increased.
I noticed that when there are other players, the game can't get faster. That's probably because the game has to keep the game speed the same at all Players, therefore reducing the speed to the weakest PC available.
can java turn 2D into 3D? cause that is what we need: to change every single piece of the enviroment into a 3D model.
also, would it be worth the time? isn't it better to focus on other things?
Please note that SK IS ACTUALLY ALREADY. RENEDERED IN 3D!
The change that would need to be made is to edit the existing models if they have any graphical bugs when rendered in first person. Also, a simple camera could be added to the front of the player's skeleton model.
really? all the models of the enviroment are actually 3D? all the textures are ready to sutain a camera 90° turn? I don't have SSpy, but I don't think so. only characters and enemies have 3D models.
Thunder. They are rendered in 3D. Just because certain faces are deleted to reduce lag (Because you can't see them due to the camera angle anyways.) does not mean it is rendered in 2 Dimensions. AND HOW THE HECK CAN ONE GROUP OF MODELS BE RENDERED IN THREE DIMENSIONS, BUT ANOTHER IS NOT??? Please Thunder, before you make any assumptions on modeling, animation and rendering please actually learn a bit about them.
I have Spiral Spy, and I can and will agree with Thunder. The only 3D models are the characters, the NPCs, and the monsters. The pots are just 2D meshes, there's a hole in the back where the camera doesn't show. The walls and buildings only cover what the camera shows. The bloody gold keys are a .png.
Hex. Those are rendered in three dimensions. They're just rendered on a plane.
They have an X, Y, and Z, but they rotate to face the player. Although this may look fine for the things like keys, it begins to look odd for things like Grim Totems, Mini Jellies, Vitapods and most of all, SKYBOXES. Skyboxes are supposed to sit in one spot. They don't change when you rotate the camera; they are attached to the camera itself, so they look REALLY weird in those situations, and can even glitch up and fragment.
The whole idea is kinda flawed since the game's been designed with just the one camera horizontal rotational angle in mind. The amount of work that would have to be done to fill in the rest of the textures and remake all the models would be pretty enormous compared to the return: a gimmicky function which would be vastly inferior in practicality to the current bird-eye view which gives far greater perception. And even after implementation, there's a lot of fiddling around that needs to be done so that it doesn't look absolutely terrible. You can't just stick a camera to the Knight's face and expect it to work, you have the problem of walls clipping with the camera. (looking through walls is very unrefined) Additionally, depending on whether the camera is attached to the player model, or fixed at a certain location orientated around the player's x and y, the camera would jiggle around a lot, or clip through the player a lot, respectively.
Some dude already made an example image of first person SK. It looked horrible. Man maybe 3rd person instead of top down would be neat, idk. But definitely not 1st person.
Well, it's RPG, so 1st and 3rd person view would make the game collapse instantly. And game engine will have to be altered to Source, which will take forever.
@ BUSTWARE YES . anyway, making it first player will change the whole game completely.NO FUN

Would RuneScape count as being 3D? (If you haven't played it recently, do so and get back to me).
All objects in SK have an X, Y, and Z. It's just that everything but players and mobs are rendered on a plane, which have a permanent Z of O.
Mini jellies are planes instead of cubes!

Also, the environment is clearly 3D along with the players and enemies and items and some special effects and this and that and etc.
A 3rd person shoulder view would be nice.
Why would OOO change the game over to 1st person? This game was designed and build around its current camera system, and changing it would only make the game worse. I for one would not enjoy getting surrounded by monsters and mauled because I can't see what's behind be, or getting blindsided by a lumber.
Dungeon Crawlers were built with this Camera Angle for a reason. A top down view provides maximum coverage. It's why Minecraft PvPers set their fov to Quake Pro. To see the most possible. Switching things to first, or even third person would just make knights more susceptible to Offscreen Kills.
Then they should make it an option and give it a distance between player.
Why would OOO add something that nobody would use after their first try?
If OOO would ever make that,I'm sure they'll adjust it so that players would like it.
off-topic:Do you come online on SK arkate?
Highly unlikely OOO would be willing to put effort into such a drastic change to the game. Also I, and probably lots of other people, won't be able to play SK if it requires more GPU power than it does now. Heck, too many people are lagging enough as it is. Running the virtual world in 1st person would require much more memory and processing power.
this isn't a first person shooter
The Cupcake-God does not approve!!!
I continue to play this game because of its innocence if this game turned into cod I would quit. Playing as a chibi in third person is fun. There are way too many first person shooters if that's what you need to satisfy your lust for blood if fine go play battle field 3
Plus my parents wouldn't let me play 0_0
1) Open up Spiral Spy
2) Zoom in the camera until it's literally inside the mask of the default knight
3) Imitate gunfire
4) congrats you are now an FPS
However, this was an idea for Spiral Knights once. Got removed though.
I love how when you make one of the worst conceived suggestions ever, it results in a massive argument that lasts days, when it should have just died. You people enjoy arguing, don't you? I can't believe people feel the need to draw this out:
IT'S NEVER GOING TO HAPPEN.
Forget about the first person. That argument is long over and we've switched to third-person(although it already is).
Have you guys ever played othen MMO's?I'd like to see Spiral knights like that.
Yes I do go online Dahall. Except everything in the game, I see being used. Because hipsters.
And have you ever actually seen skilled players playing some sort of MMORPG?
They ALWAYS zoom out as far as they can in order to see as much as they possibly can, while still being able to see their character.
The problem with first person is that you cant see behind you. Yer screwed now

The line for teleport to town square even has it's own shadow
Easy. Those are just 2D models that are rotated at a good angle in 3D and clayed together. I guess.
And for the teleport line, it's there so it looks like cubes even if you stand at, say, the stairs to the right.
me: im gonna do a boss in 1st person ''killed from behind where i cant see''
me:playing lockdown in 1st person'' hit from behind, by the timei turn around im dead''
I really don't think the OP cares about this topic anymore, so you can drop it now.
Eeeeeeeeew.
Eeeew.
Ew.
No.
