I'm very new to the game (about a day of puttering around in the tutorial area), and have started looking into upgrading my current weapons (the starter weapons)... but I don't really get how to compare the different items in-game.

What I'd want to do is compare an item (or item of a recipe) in the shop before I buy it/make it/etc, with an item I already have (at least whatever is currently equipped). I can kinda visually compare, but I noticed a sorta "faded blue" section of the bar... I'm not really sure what that represents (kinda thought it might be an overlay of my current item for comparison). And there's a "compare" option in the inventory UI... but I guess that requires me to actually buy a second item to compare it to?

And I'm not too sure what the item star-rating is.. an abstract value of how good a weapon is? or does it have a direct impact on how powerful the weapon is?

And I'm not sure what an item's rank does (and can I see how that item progresses as it levels). Does a ranked-up item show "better" stats in comparison to a "better", but low ranked, item?
