Windows 7 Fullscreen mode - Client crashes

Hi, I hope there's some way to fix this issue. When I play the game in the original windowed mode it works perfectly, however my health bar and energy bar is off screen at the bottom, so I want to make it fullscreen.

The only problem is, when I click fullscreen OR change the resolution at all, the game crashes and disappears altogether, resulting in me having to go to the webpage to start it up again.

Would love to know if there's a way to fix this because I feel like raging everytime it happens.

Thanks!

same problem/semi solution

I have the same problem, figured it was just a quirk of my system since it plays full screen on my sister's system...I decided I didn't need it in full screen anyway and moved the task bar to the right and vertical (therefore nothing gets cut off)--right click your taskbar, properties, task bar location:right.

Try changing the settings via the Login Menu.

I am running Windows 7 on my desktop and have no issue with this. However, I do have an issue with this on my Windows 7 laptop: while trying to change the resolution or windowed state in-game, SK crashes.

Something I have discovered: the resolution and windowed state both change and save successfully via the login menu (before you log in at all). Try changing these settings before you even log in to your account, and see if SK keeps running.

If your primary issue is with the in-game crashing then I must apologize, because I have no knowledge of a workaround for this. There does need to be a fix for this crash bug, as more and more players are having problems with it (mostly laptops and netbooks it seems). My suggestion will allow you to at least play in full screen, assuming it works. The downside is that you will need to log out whenever you wish to change the resolution and/or windowed state.

Good luck.

Just a question (To possibly help the devs fix this for you guys):

Which version of Windows 7 are you on? Home, Premium, or Ultimate? Is it 32-bit or 64-bit?

I myself am I on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, and have no problems with resolution changing. It might be a bug to your specific version of Windows, and not 7 in general.

Perhaps it is not the OS to begin with.

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit on my desktop with no issues. However, my Laptop is running the exact same thing and it crashes when trying to change the windowed state or resolution in-game. Perhaps it is not the OS to begin with, but rather the graphics card/drivers?

I'm on an Nvidia 8800GTS 512MB with latest drivers (I don't know the number off hand).

I can't switch into fullscreen on my laptop either, I have Windows 7 64-Bit and Intel GMA 4500M HD integrated graphics.

Maybe it's a problem with Intel graphics drivers?

I have noticed the same bugs

I have noticed the same bugs here, and weirdly enough it can be fixes in some cases. (I do say some cases, this isn't a permanent working fix but it might work for some of you guys)

for people with a windows 7 64bit version:

1) go to internet explorer and download the latest Java 32-bit, this will update your java 32bit version already.
2) open internet explorer 64bit too and go to java.com again and get that same java, because it will be the 64bit Java.

Having both of them reduces the amount of graphical issues and fullscreen issues so far. I had people that I play with complaining about the Aero theme getting disabled and not reappearing after closing the game. By getting both 32 and 64bit versions of Java that problem is permanently gone, it will switch back properly to the aero theme.
For some it also fixed the fullscreen issue.

I think it's worth a try. Let me know if it worked for you!

To stop the Aero Theme from

To stop the Aero Theme from being lost, you have to direct the game to the 64-bit version of javaw.exe. It's in "Program Files" instead of "Program Files (x86)"

THe problem is when I switched to 64-bit myself, there's a few graphical glitches...though for some reason the whole loss of Aero is almost more annoying (Mostly because you cant change it's color so it never fits the theme).

Are you sure Java 32/64 is

Are you sure Java 32/64 is the issue? On a Vista Ultimate 64 laptop and a 7 Professional 64 desktop in both cases the 32-bit Java (I don't even have 64-bit installed) is running the game and I've never had an issue. On both systems Java and display drivers are up to date. I do recommend making sure that your graphics driver are up to date before troubleshooting here.

I know that at one point there was Dev confirmation that one of the installers launched the game and purposely disabled Aero glass to free up system resources. This can usually be toggled by Right Clicking the Spiral Knights icon, selecting properties, navagate to the Compatibility tab and making sure "Disable desktop composition" is un-checked.

It is a known bug that the game refuses to start in fullscreen mode on may computers. You can work around this by making sure to disable fullscreen before closing the client.

Intel Integrated Graphics are known to have odd hiccups with this game, then again only the most recent Intel release (the HD Graphics 2000/3000) are even competitive with the entry-level GPU market.

This, at least, should be fixed in the next release. Not sure about other fullscreen issues.

@d0gr0ck, It was for my

@d0gr0ck,

It was for my computer. Of course, I cannot say for others. My Laptop is on x86 and never had the loss of Aero problem at all. It does have lots of odd hiccups graphically, but that's because it's on an Intel Integrated Graphics Card...so yeah it's known. You don't really need the top line model to play the game at lowest settings. Highest is a different story, however even at lowest there's some weird texture problems, random artifacts in random locations, all kinds of weird graphical glitches that shouldn't appear regardless of what card you're on. I don't really need to use my Laptop to play the game though so I don't really care too much.

In regards to the 32/64 bit Java thing: I accidentally installed the JRE x86 when I first started up my new hard-drive. I installed x64 right after, however the game, when installing, basically installed to the 32-bit version of Java. When I directed the shortcut for the game to the 64-bit version of Java, it stopped Aero from disappearing. I don't know if the game did something to the javaw.exe or used some 32-bit-only kernel commands, but it fixed it for me.

Using 64-bit Java can also create some weird graphical glitches. Nothing as serious as on the IIGs, but where two different textures merge, there's a graphical line that fluctuates as you walk. It's not really too annoying, as it's extremely small, however.

hmmm...

I have windows 7 home premium 64-bit on my computer without a hitch from installation.

I have a 1gb graphics card, an ATI Radeon HD 5450

So perhaps it is an Intel issue. I have issues on my laptop, with an Intel integrated chipset. For example I cant see my legs, and I wasn't even aware there were backgrounds until I loaded it on my computer. Many textures wouldn't load, and fire was just orange squares drifting upwards. Several other issues, resulting in crashing regularly, occurred. Fullscreen still worked though, and infact made the game survive longer. The OS was Vista however.

It can be alot:

To be honest the problem lies with the Intel Inegrated graphics (mainly to be found on laptops still these days)

I tested on 2 computers, both same setup, but one has a nVidia GeForce GTX480 card and the other one is the brandnew ATI Radeon HD 6970 (of which Ati-AMD never provided official drivers for that type yet so the drivers are for the 6900 series) and on both the client of sk was installed and working perfect on it.

Sofar seen only 1 hiccup:

on the "nvidia" pc it runs perfect, no glitches, no problems with the graphics or even the aero theme.
on the "ATI" pc it all runs fine too, but the aero theme visually flips to standard theme mode before loading the game fine. Afterwards it flips the Aero theme back on without any problems.

Both have Java 32 and 64bit installed on it, fully updated, vc redistributable packages installed (2005,2008,2010 aswell as 32/64bit ofcourse)

I tested it on an old windows xp 32bit laptop with an intel inegrated graphics card and could not get it to work either)

conclusion: different graphics cards give all the weird issues, getting the Java 64bit is not a bad idea if you are running on a 64bit OS and the different libary files you have installed on your PC (vcredist, silverlight, framework, etc)

I changed the installer so that it no longer disables Aero when you run the game. You can either uninstall and reinstall, or (as others have noted) edit the shortcut, unchecking "Disable Desktop Composition" under the "Compatibility" tab.

The issue is anytime a screen

The issue is anytime a screen adjustment (size or fullscreen option) is changed the game crashes, every time. period. I'm using an Acer 1410 with win7x86 that more than exceeds the minimums of the game, yeait runs choppy to be expected, but it still meets the requirements. and Disabling Aero via the desktop composition doesn't fix the problem.

Any chance of a solution on this?

sorry to bump but, any chance

sorry to bump but, any chance of a resolution on this? I've tried the FAQ suggestiosn, and my registry is already set to everything it told me to do. Still can't full screen, still can't adjust size at all without crashing... it's really hard to play when game is off the screen.

Video card drivers are up to date, windows is up to date, and java is up to date. I can't do any more than that on my end. I've tried toggling compatibility no luck, everything is turned off or down all the way and I've tried disabling aero effects as well as turning on compatibility for XP, nothing works on my end. Anyone else have any ideas?

To help find the problem, I'm

To help find the problem, I'm running Windows 7 Professional with an Intel integrated chipset laptop and I can run fullscreen no problem. I should also note that I went with 32-bit because I had too many problems with 64-bit Vista and a lack of 64-bit compatibility. I downloaded the SK client after starting it the first time online, and I've had no problem with the program actually running...lagging due to connection issues, but the software itself runs fine.

Erogath, are you using Acer's driver package or a driver package direct from Intel? Manufacturers tend to stop offering driver updates even if Intel is cleaning up the last few bugs still.

Sorry didn't read all the comments

Well I have been hearing about a lot of problems with this game and games period. On 64bit Windows 7 laptops. Not desktops just laptops, and I am wondering if its a matter of the processors not fully being able to run the 64bit java or its trying to run 32bit on it...Could also be the portable graphics chip most laptops have...Peculiar.

@Erogath
Hmm, I hated the Intel Express Chipsets.. They don't seem to like 64bit operating systems either XD

Dogrock's picture

It could also be that many

It could also be that many laptops have very old video drivers because OEMs do a rubbish job of updating them. That and Intel's Graphics Controllers (excluding the most recent ones) are generally the laughing stock of the 3D games world.

well I'm running win7x32

well I'm running win7x32 premium, and the drivers are dated september of '09, and I checked Acer's site, there's nothing more current out there. Seems the drivers haven't been updated since win7 launch. That's just mind boggling because this laptop is precisely that old, it's not like I'm running a cobbled win95 machine or something :P

As others have stated, my desktop running win7x64 with 32 bit java is working like a charm, I can do pretty much whatever I want with it. Though it does eat A LOT of resources for such a small game. Specifically memory.

erogath

Try installing these drivers from Intel instead. They were updated this February instead of 2009. You may have to uninstall Acer's drivers fist since Intel traditionally isn't technically allowed to provide driver updates to OEM machines (existing Acer graphics drivers may block installation).

Windows Vista Same issue

Ever since that last release, I have not been able to go too full screen. All I get when I click on that is my desktop with an invisible Spiral Knights. I can hear the music. I have a bar along the top of my screen so I can close out. I have tried all sorts of video settings etc. I can't find a way to uninstall the game, so I tried to just reinstall. Still screwy. I managed to fix it so the very bottom of the game is no longer cut off, but it sure is not as much fun without the option of playing full screen. Ack!
