Are we the knight who crash landed when the skylark was shot down or are we back up sent to help piece it together?

Not only that, that same pod is opened as soon as you begin to play. So I presume that we were inside of it.
I do believe we are the victims of the crash of skylark, since near the end of the prologue there is an escape pod that is probably your own since it goes to character creation screen after that (coming off the top of my head).
