I watched my brother do about 5 or 6 teir 2 levels, and he made less than 1000 crowns from it. I used to make 3000 ish crowns from doing a couple fairly deep teir 1 levels.
Are there less crowns in levels now? It seems like it...
That's odd. They need more crowns per level, becusase of the high crystal energy price. It would get more people to buy it, better in-game economy and circulation.
Nope. The reward for the first half of each tier is a visit to Basil. The crowns are the reward for the second half.
The first half of a tier (BEFORE the Clockworks Terminal) has a low crown payout; the majority of your crowns come from the second half of the tier (AFTER the Clockworks Terminal).
Depth 1, 2, 3 = Low
Depth 5, 6, 7 = High
Depth 9, 10, 11, 12 = Low
Depth 14, 15, 16, 17 = High
Depth 19, 20, 21, 22 = Low
Depth 24, 25, 26, 27, 28 = High
It really is a good system after you reach a certain threshold where you can reasonably always have some crowns on hand to buy a recipe you need if (a big if) basil has it.
Before you can keep an excess of 4k-25k crowns just laying around it's not much of a reward. In the long run though, it balances very well and works as intended. It's just takes a little bit to get your head above water. Really, if you have no intentions of buying a recipe then you should be doing everything in your power to join parties post basil. Even if you join on floor 14 as every one is stepping on the elevator (arrgggh hate that) you still profit more than doing the whole run when you view (total crowns received/total energy used) after the run.

Increasing access to crowns would just raise ce prices more.
the first 4 levels right after the elevator has always been low in crowns compared to the levels lower until you hit the next elevator. Level 7 gains you significantly more crowns than level 9.
