Really OOO, you can do better than this.

I've been a loyal Spiral Knights player for some years now... and the latest turn of the events has really pissed me off.

We've dealt with re-skins (scissor blades), dealt with re-colours (all the accessories and what not)..

But now, moving onto RE-NAMING has taken it a bit far don't you think?

Running out of ideas and instead going for a cheap money grab is not how you retain your player base. I'm sure many people would appreciate it if you either didn't introduce this item or instead just gave it another damned colour.

The item I'm talking about is the SHADOW toupee.

Here is a picture for all of you people to compare: http://imgur.com/aUoxjCI

I pose a question to the entire community: Don't you all think this is a bit far?

I urge OOO to prevent from implementing such thoughtless and inconsiderate things into their game. Not only does it keep the game dull and boring, but to those few people who have constantly played this game, it devalues their items as well.

But in all seriousness, what do you have to gain by implementing a redundant item that only serves to irritate and infuriate your older player base?

Sincerely,

Scriggles

You're RIGHT!

I could NEVER afford a surge toupee! Shadow ones are much cheaper.

to be fair the two toupees

to be fair the two toupees ARE different colors, though it is incredibly slight. Incredibly. However you may be overlooking the fact that these things are created with very specific palettes and nobody in the design team went "HEHEHE... WE'LL FOOL THEM!!" when they made this item.

If you're going by the palettes shouldn't the shadow toupee be that hot red?

I'm fairly certain that the dark blue parts on Surge do not correspond to the bright red parts of Shadow, but I could be mistaken. I'm trying to find two examples but Surge stuff is pretty hard to come by these days, much less a Surge item that is also available in Shadow. x_x

What made you think they

What made you think they would do better than this? Every toupee, and almost all accessories took minimal effort. They're all recolors, they made the toupee texture and model once and recolor it based on predetermined theme colors, and have done so ever since accessories were a thing. Almost all accessories are, and have always been, "a cheap money grab". So two themes made similar looking toupee, who cares? OOO isn't at fault here, sure they could've tweaked it a bit (honestly what could you change btw?) but wouldn't you rather them work on new more important content? OOO has limited resources and time, their team isn't as big as some other MMOs, the game wouldn't be if it weren't for re-use of assets, they can't afford to spend all this time on little things or new models or textures. If you pay attention you'll see a lot of ingenious approaches to make the work less taxing and still look well, flat circles that follow the camera instead of spheres, certain assets and parts of models being re used on other places, always has been always will be. They've been actually crunching out more original assets lately, not to mention all the content they've been putting out/announcing, they're really going strong now, the future looks bright and your toupee is not something to worry about.

EDIT: Also, I'd like to point out surge and shadow are different themes, while they share a similar or almost identical secondary color, the greyish dark blue we see in the toupee (toupee's are colored based on this), surge has the purply dark red as primary color whereas shadow has an almost black grey as a primary, far more noticeable on things such as wings and most accs that use both colors.

Quick look into Spiral Spy if you want to take the time will tell you every single color palette designed. Did you know that military and divine tailed helms would have looked almost identical if you didn't look at that bottom green piece?

The primary, secondary and the missing tertiary colors is what makes up one palette: Shadow, Surge, Hunter, Divine, Volcanic, Cool, Dusky etc. and each accessory utilises each color (secondary, tertiary, primary etc) for each accessory. The reason why shadow cat tails have the red while other shadow stuff don't is because red is a (tertiary I think, not sure) color that is not present/used in other accessories.

They are not entirely the same I suppose, just they happen to share a few colors, like divine and military do, or just look very similar.

Honestly, who cares? There's a cheaper version of the Surge Toupee. Isn't that a good thing?

The point is that OOO created

The point is that OOO created a new accessory, and made it almost impossible to differentiate from a previously existing (now unobtainable) accessory. As Hr-Dalp said, they reuse assets but prior to now, none of them have been identical as it is with the toupees. I'm fine with the reusing of old models and textures.. but using the exact same item? Come on now, you could at least change the colour.

With a good eye for details, only one truth prevails.

Actually, one is darker than the other. Not to the point where it would be like telling shadow from divine, but it is very slight, like Addy said.

They didn't re-use the surge

They didn't re-use the surge toupee, they made a shadow toupee, it happens to look the same due to the colors each theme is made of, but it still is shadow themed. If you were to change the toupee texture and add in the other colors you'd see in game that they are colored differently. Shadow toupee is as much copy paste as any other toupee, in the sense that they just assigned it the shadow theme, they did not however copy paste the surge toupee and rename it. This isn't the first time accessories look almost identical, I seem to remember some scarves looking almost the same, with the original themes mind you.

When you're this swag this world just bows at your knees

Volcanic and Surge have quite similar themes.
And literally all the headbands look the same. No-one complaining about that.

Anyway, adding Shadow ("Curse") accessories into the game was due to popular demand. The developers made some mockups, the players saw it in the files, and wanted it added.

Let's not forget the shadow

Let's not forget the shadow accessories are bonuses, the boxes are about the obsidian costumes, they didn't have to add shadow accs to it. They only promised 100% of an obsidian (completely new and original) costume/accessory, the shadow accs are 25% and the kind of recolors that people have complained about since hunter and surge.
