Should I craft a Iron Slug from the Mega Magnus I have sitting around? I like normal damage better than pierce damage by the way. Also, the Gunner update is coming out soon so it may buff the Iron Slug.

While I have the Iron Slug for the same reason you are thinking about getting it, I would have to agree with Thinslayer. Wait for the update to see what benefits beset it. Afterward, see what comments are like after the fact in regards to the gun itself. Since I do not have a Callahan, I won't be able to make the comparison between that and the Iron Slug. But I've got a Valiance so I can at least take a look at the damage.

I agree that you should wait for the gun update. Other important points are:
What other guns/weapons are going into this load out? Why aren't you coordinating multiple non-normal damage types, to optimize your damage output? In other words, how can you make a blanket statement about disliking piercing damage? It's just one of three non-normal damage types. It happens to be the one that's effective against the most difficult monsters (fiends, Vanaduke body) and the least difficult monsters (beasts).
In the long term, plan your gear in terms of the 5-star items you want. Don't get a 4-star gun and then look around for what its upgrade should be. Pick a 5-star gun that you really want, and then start its alchemy path. In other words, don't craft Iron Slug or Callahan, unless you really want Iron Slug or Callahan.
(The "long term" has gotten longer, now that 5-star fire crystals are rare. But this rarity, if it continues, just makes it even more important that you not waste your 5-star fire crystals on 5-star items that you don't really want.)

Even if it's beastly looking,
Do what I'm doing:I'd say wait till the update drops.
In almost all situations you currently are better off using a valiance or alchemer for your damage output as a gunner.
Magnus line needs a massive buff in damage to make up for it's long shot time and low clip.

Oh I do coordinate damage types. I have nearly all damage types in my 5* arsenal, but I just really like the Magnus lines mechanics and designs.

Trust me...
Then wait for the gunner update. And frankly, you won't be able to heat your new gun unless you stumble upon a stupidly huge stash of radiant fire crystals, so you'll just lose damage by crafting up.
So stick with your Mega Magnus for now.
