Admit it, Grasping Plateau scared the Devilite out of you the first time you did it.

Come on, admit it, don't lie to your fellow, friendly, fiend fighting, forum exploring knights. The first time you did Grasping Plateau you:

  1. Was confused to see that you were all alone and the mini-map wasn't working.
  2. Was being freaked out by the music.
  3. Got scared when a image of the Apocrean Harvester flashed on your screen.
  4. Became even more scared when you seen "a freakin' 8 meter tall being of dark energy or some freaky [scrap]" who's attack made the ground to shake then launched a army of tentacles, that shot up from the ground, after you.
  5. Panicked a little when you got caught by tentacles (Apocrean Grip).
  6. Became enraged at the scarabs who bombarded you with attacks while you was stuck.
  7. Was wondering why you was stuck for such long time.
  8. Nervously held up your shields ,and watched the Harvester approach your helpless knight, thinking that it would protect you.
  9. Was shocked to see that the Harvester's attack (Apocrean Gaze) went right through your shield.
Were wondering what that purple flash was and why your team mate's health was going so quickly.
  10. Felt a great sense of relief when you went down the elevator just to find ,to your joyful surprise, either fiends or the same old great grave yard that you just escaped from.

Or was it just me...?

(Soon after, when you run it again)

When you're this swag this world just bows at your knees

If this game were first person, yes. I can't play any first person games with mutants or monsters in them. Not even Half Life: I put myself into the position of the main character too much and I get jittery when things jump out at me. (Although I've managed to build up enough nuts to play Killing Floor, mainly because the zombies always come from the same spawn areas, so I've come to be familiar with it)

But third person? No. I can play games like Alien Swarm and such because of the disembodied camera angle (although there is a setting to switch Alien Swarm to first person but as you can guess, I can't do it :$)

Even upon my first visit to the plateau, I've never been scared, just curious. I run faster than this spooky guy, and even if it catches me, there's my Maskeraith who hides me under his shadow cloak.

Hmm..... *Suspicious look*

@Hexzyle & Phyrosite - Ok, but, compared to the other SK levels, one could call the Grasping Plateau scary... right...?

@Jendar-Nox - Yep, yet another reason why I'm glad I picked Maskeraith. Although I did find it strange why shadow cloak even worked. I mean, its tentacle ,or whatever those things are, are not wrapped around air extremely tightly now is it? If it looks like it's holding something, then maybe, just maybe it is holding something, otherwise it would have returned into the ground.

"Let's go have a quick zap to see if there is anything there." (obviously it wouldn't say that... it would think it... :D)

@Limesheep - :/ ...

I feel like I should add somewhere "compared to other SK missions"

Excited and confused, but not scared. My first run was super boring actually... I normally don't bother breaking open graves so I missed back all of the action, I just roamed around until I found the exit and that was that.

I had the misfortune of running with a bunch of buggers that spoiled the whole thing before we even got on the first party button

I was still horrified when I saw Mr. Grabby Hands.

Wasn't scared at all, though, the bit with the Party Button activating in the first level & the gate not going down, mini-map staticing, & hands popping up out of nowhere made me say what the fudge. But through the Apocrean level, it wasn't scary. Just confusing at first, then increasingly annoying.

"Dude wtf go get soles"

"You expect me, the only Knight still up, to get Souls, whom have increased health because of the Party size, while being chased by the Slender-Wannabe, while you, laying in the dirt, provide no help & just lay there to get the Sigils for you."

"Yes"

"..."

*Return to Haven*

Everything else was kinda cheesy. Oh no, static face screen! Creepy Graveyard! Dark enetity that uses tent- I mean hands to hold you into place! Oooooooooo!

My first time, played solo on

My first time, played solo on normal, fullscreen high details unlike normal.

Was awesome. Very creepy and unexpected, and if those two make scary, then great. I was a bit scared running from the giant dude in the graveyard for sure.

Beyond the first time it became a commonplace system to work around, but that's every mission. I really enjoyed this Three Rings, thanks.

Nothing about it was scary. Only time I ever felt any bit surprised was the from the button at the very beginning but the grasping plateau was pretty bland for me.

1. Was confused to see that

1. Was confused to see that you were all alone and the mini-map wasn't working.
Someone told me about this before my 1st time, but I still was completely confused. I remember holding my headphones, trying to hear the "charged weapon" sound to locate my teammates.

2. Was being freaked out by the music.
There was music? xP

3. Got scared when a image of the Apocrean Harvester flashed on your screen.
YES.

4. Became even more scared when you seen "a freakin' 8 meter tall being of dark energy or some freaky [scrap]" who's attack made the ground to shake then launched a army of tentacles, that shot up from the ground, after you.
And just after the flashing image. AND THE BREATHING. I still panic a little every time I hear it.

5. Panicked a little when you got caught by tentacles (Apocrean Grip).
The same "panic" I have when a Lumber freezes me.

6. Became enraged at the scarabs who bombarded you with attacks while you was stuck.
Never happened, thank Vog.

7. Was wondering why you were stuck for such long time.
Yes, it felt an eternity :(

8. Nervously held up your shields ,and watched the Harvester approach your helpless knight, thinking that it would protect you.
I always have my shield up, I'm paranoid.

9. Was shocked to see that the Harvester's attack (Apocrean Gaze) went right through your shield. // Were wondering what that purple flash was and why your team mate's health was going so quickly.
D,:

10. Felt a great sense of relief when you went down the elevator just to find ,to your joyful surprise, either fiends or the same old great grave yard that you just escaped from.
Yeah, but at least now I knew what to expect.

You forgot the most important part, the 1st party button!
My reaction was "WAT". I sincerely didn't expect that.

The scariest part of the Apocrean Harvester is how powerless it makes you feel. It's this hulking monstrosity that can effortless kill and disable you. Any other monster or enemy, no matter how hulking, can be taken down. The Harvester is relentless, and slaying it is useless. Not only from the bit of lore that the souls give you, signifying that you "have no choice" in having your soul taken, you experience it as a player firsthand the moment those hands make contact with you. It's a complete change in mindset from how the game is played, from "Yeah I'm so strong I can just mow through all these mobs!" to "Oh god oh god run away I don't want to die I don't want to die I don't want to die ".

More like... Oh hi there Mr. Creepy guy... *moonwalks away...*

But seriously the roaming boss in grasping plateau is such a non-threat it's sad. The only people that get caught by it are the ones that don't have the common sense to move away until he decides bother someone else.

The lack of effort it takes to avoid it completely kills any potential thrill it's supposed to add. To be completely honest Grimalkins play the roll of immortal stalker much better because they can swarm players and move a lot faster.

Yeah, Slender-thing actually run at GM speed when someone's running away from him. So discard that "move a lot faster" part of Grimalkins please.

The first time was very scary, mostly because I like to play solo. I was the only one that creep was after, and being all alone made it worse.

You and I both know what I am really talking about... Grimalkins chase players at much faster speeds.

When the "slender" switches to a different person it sort of pseudo teleports near them but it doesn't actually chase people at those speeds. Once it actually begins chasing it is like a turtle crossing the road.

Eeeh, sorry.

I wasn't scared at any time I did it. I mean, I thought it was just a corny ripoff of slender, and I don't even think slender is scary. I played penumbra: Black Plague but the scariness died out after I learned you can kill the infected. After that, not much scares me anymore.

I was both fascinated and thrilled in my first run. I ran the mission early on in the event, with only one other person (out of a full party of 4) who had completed the mission before.

When the first trap triggered I was like "Awesome! I approve of this OOO! Do it again! Do it again!" Then I spent several minutes just oogling the whole floor, exploring the corners and talking to the NPCs.

Then the next floor came, and it was just a normal floor. At first I was so paranoid, and taking it incredibly slow, trying not to fall for another trap. "OOO... you disappoint me... I disapprove!"

And THEN the Grasping Plateau! Oh man I was so thrilled by this. At this point a random guildie just cryptically said "Beware of not-Slenderman!" So I did the normal thing and started bashing open tombstones. My first set of freed souls popped out... so I decided to try attacking them, and figured out that's how you get tokens. Thus, I proceeded to keep smashing open tombstone. Then the Apocrea showed up. The first static image made me jump, and the sounds just sent me over the edge. I was outright panicking at that point. Strangely I came to my senses when the Apocrea first grabbed me and melted my face, and I was just fascinated by the whole thing. Mainly because I kept thinking of it from a game designer's standpoint. I've been watching a lot of Extra Creditz, and I always had been a fan of Zero Punctuation. I started recognizing good uses of horror elements in the game. A good horror game makes you feel absolutely powerless, which is exactly what happens when the Apocrea goes after you. You know it's coming for you, but you don't know what it is. You don't know how it's going to kill you, but you know it wants to kill you. It's that feeling of being powerless and not knowing is what makes a good horror atmosphere. Once that started going through my head, the fear kinda went away and was replaced with this curious fascination.

Oh no my friend, it was some fanart that was made for the guy...

I like my things intact... Not all over the room, which even this guy didn't accomplish in-game, love how that stops few artists though.

I develop irrational fears over some small carp, hate what feels like slender knockoffs but respect the effort.

<insert witty comment here>

*A little at first, then became annoying.
*Not really.
*More annoyed because it lagged me.
*Was more "FOR VOG'S SAKE LEAVE ME ALONE I'M TRYING TO KILL FREED SOULS". Then when I held its aggro on purpose for a majority of the visit by running around in circles with the intention of keeping my team alive I got accused of leeching. That's gratitude for you.
*More of a facedesk because then I knew my health was going to be drained.
*Facedesked harder when my shield was killed by Scarabs because my teammates didn't believe in killing them.
*No, figured it was a statusless attack which functioned like Freeze.
*The shield did reduce damage taken but didn't prevent it which sucked.
*Nope, had a feeling it would
*Sometimes I wondered what it was.
*Nope, was happy but felt more prepared this time around.
