You know, the big ball we're all living on? It's obvious we, in Haven, are living on the green part, someplace, but what about the mountains and other half of the rocky landscape the covers the planet? Exploring the surface would sound neat, though probably largely rejected due to exploration being the clockworks, but it makes me think..."what if?"
About Cradle's surface...
Actually I would like to see the other side too, but I wouldn't be too surprised if the planet was half rock and half grass as a whole.
There have been threads like this in the past, I recall. Back in the day people just wanted to be able to explore it like a real landscape, maybe get faster mist regen while playing there or something. But naturally nothing ever came of those threads. I would definitely be interested in making this game a little more interesting with non-gameplay oriented exploration. Entertain the intellect with story, while keeping the real root of the game down in the Clockworks. I'm kind of in love with Cradle and its intriguing mythos! Always looking for new snippets about it. I think even if it had no particular gameplay purpose, the surface could be a cool addition. Give knights a big place to roam around in, like Haven or the Advanced Training Hall, but purely for the sake of exploration, socializing maybe the odd duel, or what have you. This would require too much.. stuff.. though, so I understand why they just don't.
Even so, rambling aside, I'd love to see more capacity for socializing. Haven is cool, but limited to what, four medium-sized spaces repeated over and over forever? And guildhalls are nice, but sort of clubhousy. More space to just hang out would be cool.
All this talk about cradle yet no comment on how cradle looks like a globe...
I'd love to be able to wander around with my friends, explore the landscape, maybe killing the occasional chromalisk, but mostly derping around. Even though people would tell you to just explore the CW, I rather be able to actually explore (I've seen most/every CW level) and not be concerned about crowns and killing things.
I imagine we live on that long green stretch near the rocks. I would love to explore those canyons or the mountain ranges, though the lack of jumping will make both a long trek. The size of the planet and lack of good transportation also would make it difficult.
Cradle is quite large if you think about the size of the floors and the orbs in which they reside. If each of the floors is as tall as it is wide and the core is the pure center of the planet then we can figure out size of the planet with math. Cradle=2π(average floor width*30), even if the floors were 100 tiles wide we would have a huge planet (18840 tiles around the surface), and we know the floors are substantially than 100 tiles.
The great size means OOO could go in so many different directions other than down to entertain us. We have barely even seen the other side of Cradle so there might be vast oceans, sprawling deserts, or even a vibrant rainforest. Exploring the clockworks may be well and good but you are placed on a alien planet, who wouldn't want to explore out of town?
There's probably already forest on the visible side. We are looking at Cradle from outer space, after all. It would just be fun to have a relatively static series of surface maps to travel through. The more labyrinthine the better, so little secrets can be hidden throughout.
Do remember that Cradle's internal workings is the Clockworks, so the surface would constantly shift. So if you were to explore somewhere else on the surface it's very likely you would be pulverized by the moving plates (Not necessarily tectonic plates). Plus, it is straying off the game's purpose of exploration through elevators, as you have stated.
@Red-Galaxy I didn't think that was really worth mentioning, I mean, if I saw that anyplace on Cradle, I would think of it like the Halo Ring , only just being a really long bar of gold or whatever material it may be.
@Spectre-Nova Now I don't remember the lore and text of Cradle 100%, but I thought the shifts were inside, not outside. But even with this in regard, the shifting plates on the top could very well open up more areas of exploration and randomness. I'd like to think that the part we're living on is moving as well, so it may not be as drastically dangerous as you think. Not saying it should happen at all, but it's a nice thought!
That red stuff is most likely gremlin territory - Ever notice in operation crimson hammer the elevators go up?
Next time you end up in the T1 hub (platform below the arcade) look carefully at the background on high quality. The world's surface does indeed move around, but not on top of each other. More like accelerated tectonic drift. This is why the surface appears to have vaguely hexagonal plates of terrain instead of a smooth surface, most likely. They're big freakin' plates though. so "Outside Haven" could still be a rather static place, unless we went along the edge of the plate.
And correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the tutorial take place on a separate plate, and to reach Haven we used a bridge to cross the yawning abyss between them?
Also, I agree with Skepticraven that the Gremlin base of operation may be somewhere on the surface. They must live somewhere, right?
I was about to make a thread of the exact same thing. Though it was more about the opposite side of the one we always see.
