If you've been using the Internet recently, you've probably noticed that Vol- er, Valve didn't do Dota 2's Diretide event this year. Hence massive torrents of irate players clamoring for VOLVO to ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ GIVE DIRETIDE. Now, did they turn away at the stream of rage directed against them? Nope, they actually made an honest-to-god apology.
Just one more thing other small teams do that Three Rings doesn't.
Well... The difference is... Dota sucks... And the devs know that the only way to keep people playing, is to give them junk

@Damienfoxy: Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man. Also, if things like Diretide are what you call bread and circuses to retain players, what would you call Dark Harvest? Or the box promotions? Or really all the stuff that's been added to this game in recent months?

Honestly... after the stuff the community pulled, I'm not sure most people even deserve diretide.
Not only was valve spammed, but people began flooding PRESIDENT OBAMA with "༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ GIVE DIRETIDE." When that wasn't enough, people began harrassing Volvo, the CAR COMPANY for diretide, to the point where one of Volvo's PR guys publically announced something along the lines of "Hey Valve! Give diretide please. We don't know what diretide is, but people are calling us about it." CyborgMatt, one of the main dota 2 guys who's known for going through the dota 2 program files and figuring out updates before they happen, was getting harassed so badly via phonecalls to his personal address that he was on the verge of calling the police about it.
The "༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ GIVE DIRETIDE" bull**** is frankly embarrassing, and I'm ashamed to call myself an avid Dota 2 fan.
Was it really that bad? Wow.

I have heard about the outlash for not having diretide, but I had no idea it was that bad. Honestly I am appalled at the behaviour of those players, you get to play a game you love but instead you rage about how you didnt get something shiny. Apparently the turn out for diretide last year not even that great, and yet this year it is as if Valve stole the very heart of Dota2 with all the hate going around.
Valve did a nice thing, which the community did not in the least deserve, in apologizing. There should have handed out temp bans for the harassment that went on. This sort of attitude should not be just passed over, and in so doing it Valve took the high road and was kind to the players.
It's particularly disgusting how the players went to metacritic and sabotaged the user scores.
First point: how is it you've yet to figure out bashing OOO for not being like a different development team is going to accomplish absolutely nothing? I'm sure we'd all like more participation from those most familiar with the game, but this is not the way to do so. In fact, comparing them to Valve or whoever the hell develops Warframe may even be counterproductive. I'd be willing to bet there are things the developers and GMs would love to say, but since they'd rather not be fired they opt to say nothing at all.
Second, and partially in relation to my first point, Traevelliath and Wolfe are very correct. Why give something to a group that doesn't deserve it? Valve has a reputation for being very nice to its consumers, and generally that turns out well, but I would question whether they went too far this time. The only thing they have to apologize for is for being present for an expectation that was completely bogus.
Finally, on a lighter note, I imagine a lot of people are actually somewhat happy Diretide will be late this year. If you hadn't noticed, Team Fortress 2 also had a Halloween event, probably their best ever. Killing Floor had their annual Hillybilly Horror event. There was some minor MMO that had something about a bouncing pumpkin and a gun that shot tentacles, I wasn't really paying attention. If DOTA 2 had also piled on an event, I might as well have called the university and told them I had mono.
Sigh ... I generally don't like ranting, but that felt at least somewhat relieving.
Well, I agree with Damienfoxy, Dota sucks...(that's my opinion) I tried playing when I noticed that almot 600,000 people log on almost every day... I thought it must be good. I could not stand it.

I tried to play Dota 2, I really did, but it was just so... blah. The controls were sucky, the combat stunk. With 250k players on at any time of day, I really thought it would be more fun.
Spiral Knights is much better for me. Plus I play Borderlands 2, and a bunch of other games. SK is the only MMO I play.

Dota is actually very fun in a strategy sense. You just need a good team, is all. The playerbase sucks...
3 games in a row, each time I had a not-so-good player on my team who was badmouthing everyone. I barely got any chance to get practice...Every mess up was like "HEY YOU SUCK UNINSTALL THE GAME!" I know I should have practiced against bots, but where is the fun in that? Either I have a bunch of thinkheaded AI on my side (who won't work with you) or 3 people who do work with you and 1 who doesn't...in the worst way possible.
Thank GOSH for the mute button. I don't play the game anymore, even so. But for anyone who want's the try it, take my advice: Mute someone as soon as they begin badmouthing, particularly on the mic.
Lol... the point of the thread is that Dota has done well to listen to its irrational playerbase, not that Dota is better than us, or that they were right to GIVE DIRETIDE or any of that... Perhaps OOO could learn from this?
After all, if you were one of those people, and you were heard after shouting GIVE DIRETIDE and you got your DIRETIDE event, you'd think Dota was the greatest game of all time... but if you weren't heard after shouting "GIVE SHARDBOMBS"... It doesn't matter if work would be lost/time wasted, the players felt the DIRETIDE event was needed and so, I suppose it was.

Well, I don't think Dota sucks, but I'm not sure about the community, since I only play with bots .-.
All MOBA communities are terrible, but that's probably because of the nature of the game. Dota is a very snowball focused game, and it's all about doing small things correctly/better than your opponents to build an advantage. Dota is technically a team game, however it starts off with everyone isolated. As a result, you can be doing perfectly fine, if not winning your lane, however if an ally on the other side of the map screws up, it can completely spiral out of control and lose you the game, despite you doing nothing wrong. In addition, Dota is a game about subtle things. So a lot of people don't even notice what they did wrong. As a result, they automatically blame someone else when the enemy team spirals out of control, even when they could of done something about it.
Valve is trying REALLY hard to work on the community and make it more accessible to new players. They've made A LOT of progress, however that's like saying you're only being crushed by 1 elephant, rather than 4.

Which reminds me, Diretide has been available on D2ware throughout this entire affair. So the fuss has literally been because people wanted to make a fuss about it. That, or people wanted items, which is a pitiful excuse at best.

I kinda like the current UI. The only thing that I would change is the character window. There's too much space in all the tabs, and the costume tab is unnecessary.
