These methods of monetization are in a vague sense already applied.
You pay for premium content. Premium content in Spiral Knights is access to cosmetics and other little nick-knacks to doll up your knight. Your payment comes in the form of a Silver Key. You obtain a Lockbox, let's assume you got one by chance. The box randomly selects from an immense pool of accessories, some are rarer than others, and as such more desirable. You'll never know what you get until you open it.
