I've had my eye on Shadowsun for a long time, since it's bonus damage, and poison resist is nice. But I don't have any elemental armor anyway, so Nameless is appealing, and ASI would be a nice bonus.

Chaos is a very nice set, but for that I'd need to start on a whole new line of armor etc etc, and Elite and Advanced Orbs seem to be really rare right now... But yeah, it's definitely a good option and if I can get it I'll try.
Yes, I like to help people search for information, so that they can answer their questions very rapidly. A Google search such as gunner armor site:forums.spiralknights.com reveals many threads. Then you can ask more precise follow-up questions.
If you are an experienced player who knows the Clockworks and the monster AIs, then I recommend that you plan your armor based first on offense, then on status defense, then on damage defense. If you are a less experienced player, then you might plan based on status defense, then offense, then damage defense.
With this in mind, it's clear that Chaos is very powerful, if you can stand the status weakness. Shadowsun and Nameless both offer nice offense. The distinction to which Zeddy alluded is that you can always get ASI through UVs, but you can't get blanket damage bonuses (all six monster families, Vanaduke, PvP) through UVs. This is what makes sets such as Shadowsun and Skolver relatively desirable.
IMHO Shadowsun used to be the go-to gunslinger armour but then they buffed chaos set, added battle sprite perks and made crafting trinkets cheaper. Now you can wear any gunslinger armour and still get max ASI and DMG. Basically I suggest you pick the one you like the look of best. :P
If you dont have UVs on your guns but want max DMG CTRand ASI then my standard suggestion for a full set is:
Seerus mask
Chaos cloak
swiftstrike
elite trueshot x2
Quickdraw II perk
I know you said you don't want to start a new set but that's really the most OP gunslinger set you can make without UVs.
Putting the trinkets themselves aside for a moment, trinket slots are now much more expensive than they used to be, at least for those of us who used to by them using mist energy on alternate accounts. My monthly trinket/weapon slot cost used to be 250 CE; now it's 550 energy.
Wait till gunner update and have a 1 up on other people by crafting the new armors.
Gunner update better get a shield as well, something like Barbarous Thorn Shield, but for Gunslingers.
we have one, it's called the swiftstrike buckler.
ASI on guns is key. You can get a high dmg bonus from two separate sets, or asi from two sets. Thing is, chaos gives ctr and dmg buffs, lacking only asi. Right now, the most optimal set for a gunner is full chaos with a swiftstrike buckler.
Matter of fact, the only thing I'd accept as a gunner shield would be a 5* upgrade path on the SSB. I can't see a value in a dmg med on a shield. As a gunner, we shouldn't be up close and personal, so a shield is really a tertiary item to us. guns and armour being primary, and trinkets as secondary, to either max our dmg or asi. Now, the SSB i consider primary, because of the massive asi buff we get from it.
You're right, swiftstrike is the best shield for gunslingers.
What are the chances that one of the new Gunslinger armor/helmets coming out with the patch will be like Vog Cub? Meaning high fire resistance, elemental or shadow defense, and looks like you're coated in magma?
@Muirduirfac
It wouldn't surprise me, actually... its kind of one of the few things the gunners really need for armor.
Bopp might come in here and tell you to get Shadowsun because universal damage bonus for guns is hard to get while you can get ASI with Swiftstrike Buckler and UVsx.
He might also link some kind of google search related to gunslinger armours.
I'll tell you that defence is meh and you shouldn't bother yourself with it. The elemental defence of Nameless will, at most, deduct 3 pips of damage from an elemental source.
However, if you still would like an elemental gunslinger armour, go for Chaos. It has the same elemental defence as Nameless, but provides damage and CTR boost.
