What's the difference between Gen 1 (item name here) and just plain old (item name here)?

Is it just being tacked on to justify selling it higher than normal, or is there a functional/visual difference?

[Graveyarding once answered, I'm honestly confused about it.]

The only thing that I've

The only thing that I've heard gen 1 tacked onto is wings. Gen one wings would be the kinds of wings tat don't flap around.

If you mean wings, Gen 1 wings are static, metal wings, as opposed to the newer, animated kinds.

If it's Tabards/Chapeaus, it means they're colorations from the first sale they appeared in. IIRC they're red, white, or black for Gen 1.

Oh, I see. So the non-valk, non-dragon wings.

Thanks, Graveyarding.

Gen1 Wings, Dragon Wings,

Gen1 Wings, Dragon Wings, Valkyrie Wings, Apocrean Disciple Wings.... respectively.

The game used to have Wings come from Lockboxes. Your normal generic type wings. Like these.
Then along came a promo in early 2012. Year of the Dragon. So there were Prize Boxes... that had Dragon Wings in them. Like these.
A little later in the year 2012, another promo came along. It had Prize Boxes that had Valkyrie Wings in them. Like these.
In the fall of 2013, we had an Obsidian Box Promotion that had many items including Apocrean Disciple Wings, but I can't find those on the Wiki.

So the original Wings are the 1st Generation of them, Dragon the 2nd Generation, Valkyrie the 3rd, and Apocrean the 4th. However, Dragon, Valkyrie, and Apocrean have distinguishing names so separate them from the others. Wings do not. So to distinguish them and to prevent confusion, they are called Gen1 Wings.

EDIT: Graveyarded before I could actually finish typing all of that...
