Then there are some probabilities:
1. Somebody login your account and used most of your sparks.
2. It is a bug (if you picked only 4 sparks with the mail that is sent when you login after the update, it's clearly a bug) and you must send a bug report.
3. You saw it wrong, maybe logged in to other accounts?

I think the better question here, is WHEN did you become a vanguard? People were given everything "required" depending on missions they had completed, basically giving them the rewards everyone else will earn instead of making them have to buy it all instead.
If you're not talking about that reward mail for already having missions done before the sprite update and forge came around then you'll have to be more specific.
If you're just talking about mission rewards for BECOMING vanguard, then yeah, that mission only gives a few sparks, where people who were already vanguards were getting their full set of mission rewards rather than just a few from a single mission

he/she talk about the update of battle sprites since that update brings a lot of changes to spiral knight mechanic, such update says you will get rewards according to your rank.
If i remember if you have elevator pass or some mist tanks, or spent some CE (<< not sure about this one) they will refund you in the equivalent amount of sparks if my memory dont fail.

as I said before, the rewards was according to your rank but also if you have an elevator pass or some mist tanks in your inventory. i remember this talk about "what about us who have elevator passes?, what about us who bought "X" pack?, What about us who bought energy?" and i remember OOO sent a certain amount of spark of life according to that kind of doubts as "compensation".
Current elevator passes are getting converted to 2625 energy for each month of time left on your energy pass
Current Mist Tanks are getting converted to 10 sparks of life each
im kinda lazy to find who exactly post what kind of "refund" you get according to the stuff you will have or the rank you were. but i barely remember (i guess) got around 30-50 life of spark due some mist tanks i have sitting in my inventory and the some days that my E-Pass have left.

Did you/your Alt have any Mist Tanks?
If I recall, reaching Haven/Gaining access to Moorcroft/Emberlight back then would reward you with a Mist Tank.
