It would be great if we could jump in the game.
Jump ability
it would be fun then, we could do jump attacks and stuff.. it would be kind of fun.
Sounds gimmicky.
We already can jump. It's called dashing. What more do you want?
jump for stronger attack? we kill things pretty well on our own.
jump for dodging? dash.
jump for enviroment? this game has no y axis, you cannot jump like that.
This would be nice, But every single map would have to be redone which takes too much time.
Also, there is a Y axis. How many stairs have you seen in SK? There's a very big example of this in haven.
Having your character model appear at the top of whatever hitbox the ground underneath you has is done on your client, not the server.
Yesterday I logged on to find that some of the stair models in haven were missing. Did I magically float on air? No. I fell to the bottom of the map.
Your character does not have a Y position on the server, and therefore can be hit by anything that shares the same X and Z hitboxes, most often slag breath underneath you or bullets flying over your head. I don't know how easy something like a Y axis would be to program into the game, probably would require the client to receive that data from the server, but unless you actually suggest a reason and a use for something as gimmicky at this, all I see it as is a "press this to look cool" button.
@Hexzyle
So if our characters don't have a Y position, why is it that if you are at a lower point on stairs (like in a graveyard) and a monster is above you, certain charge attacks do not reach them? For instance, a brandish charge would run into the stairs and disappear instead of going up and hitting the slag. Isn't that because a change in Y position, or does the entire stair case just register as a wall for any attack that doesn't originate on it?
It would have to be a one-way wall, since you can attack down stairs and ramps just fine.
The floor (stairs and walls are part of the floor: they're not separate objects when it comes to entity collision as they seem to be just one big surface that you can walk over) has a 3D hitbox that's simulated on the server. It's buggy though, sometimes entities will fall through vertices. When calculating entity hitboxes, the Y value doesn't seem to be factored in.
So yes, the terrain works fine when it comes to calculating height. However, other weird stuff happens between entities when you hang around stairs too much.
...And why would we want to jump? This feature would serve no purpose.
