Greeter?

I've been thinking, I know there's a Greeter role on Puzzle Pirates, which seems to work well for getting new users accustomed to the game and thought, it may work well for Spiral Knights new users too.

Yeah, there is the training before you get to Haven, but even with that, there are still users unsure of how to fully play the game, it may be worth putting in a Greeter system and a few dungeons for such, only accessable by on-duty Greeters with a group of new users, the new users would get experience and a few crowns, where the Greeter would not, such to prevent abuse. Also a possibly limitation to stop people trying to claim from the training dungeons, so new users could only enter them once or twice with a Greeter before being unable to do so again.

It says on the Wiki that Game Masters have *Game Master* and a purple ring below their feet, so in the eyes of new players (Greeters and GMs too), there would be a green or so ring below them while on-duty. While on-duty they would be expected to help out new players with questions or problems they may have (up until it goes out of their juristiction and such would be a support ticket to a GM).

It could possibly be done so that users can apply for the role, and the GMs review the request, instead of, as in Puzzle Pirates, the user just types /duty and agrees, or equally could still be done the same way with a possible few question quiz to test the user's knowledge of Spiral Knights and the Clockworks.

Anyway, feel free to comment ideas and opinions to this~

I like the potential of this

I like the potential of this idea. There is a small problem with Newbies getting bullied
and a Greeter system would further discourage that sort of poor behaviour.

From my personal experience the learning curve at the start is still to great.
I have never been more confused when begining a game when compared to any other MMORPG.

I must concur.

Personally, I didn't think it was that difficult to get into. But I know that's not the case for everyone, as stated above. I think it'd be a great idea to have players assigned to help newbies, and an area to do so. Maybe have "greeter" equipment (equal to that of the starting equipment) and make it so that's the only equipment a "greeter" could use inside these areas. So they can help out the newbies without seeming overpowered.

No!

No, no, a million times no.

Greeters don't work in Puzzle Pirates. They didn't work when it was a vote-me-in fraternity and they don't work now that every Tom, Dick, and Swabby can /duty. Don't duplicate a bad idea here, please.

New players need good coded tutorials more than anything, and Spiral Knights already has fantastic tutorials that all new players are forced to experience. With the Advanced Training Hall around now, new players in SK have plenty of resources available to learn all of the basics and more without talking to a potentially misinformed fellow player.

Help without being a Greeter.

You could do the same here without being a greeter. When I see someone standing somewhere in Haven asking questions, I answer them. I can do that now. I can do it in YPP when I'm off duty.

Greeters aren't needed and have the potential to do much more harm than good if new players get bad information from an official channel. It's better to keep the player-given help unofficial and leave GMs as the only official help in the game.

SK should have an NPC say hi

SK should have an NPC say hi to you when you enter Haven. I didn't realize it was missing till greeters were mentioned (I realize that's a different suggestion, but it reminded me).

Just having an NPC greet you when you enter a game makes you feel a bit more welcome, I think. Having a list of FAQ would also be nice for newbs though. I have had way too many people in the past few days ask me how to use recipes.
