During the time they separated themselves from the universe, they were advancing in knowledge and technology. The "flock" actually a scouting squadron, if they are satisfied with our land, they will stay much longer than we intended. They will be trying to establish the rendezvous point for their invasion. The gremlins stay underground because of the space turkeys, for the gremlins fear them.
