Remember when we could make new gear?

Remember back when we could make a new item, and then use it, just like that?

So the other day I was looking through my inventory and I found a hat. This hat was a 4* gunslinger hat, and it was heated awkwardly around level 3 or 4. For a minute I wondered where it came from-- why was this random piece of 4* gear in my inventory? But then I saw the UV.

I remembered finding the UV, painstakingly hunting it down on the auction house. A piercing med uv- I wanted to make justifier, so that I could collect the whole set.

And I remembered how the game used to be for me. I used to log in, and go on runs for heat and crowns so that I could make my gear. I used to want for more, because it was out there for me to discover. There used to be more than just 3 sets that I could use- I used to have some kind of goal. I used to joyously look for new and interesting UVs on gear to make into their 5* versions on the auction house whenever I had the chance- I used to have such interesting loadouts that gave the game a different, but barely different, feel.

So I put my battle sprites away, because they really take away from that- you are your battle sprite, you are what that can do, your armor matters far less now that you can just get whatever buffs you need with pets + armor canceling weaknesses for results. But something still felt off. I couldn't just put on my valkyrie armor and go- thats stuck at level 6 or 7 in heat. I can't just wear whatever I want, because if I do that then I'll have to grind uFSC, and there is no way I'm paying for all of my gear again. That would be mighty silly- 6.5K for a single weapon? I'd rather just go play some other game.

Wouldn't it be wonderful to go out and do that again? To just be able to get up and go into the arcade and have a good time, crafting gear and hunting UVs?

This is what I do anyways!

If I were to make some kind of Circle Graph of how I spend my Spiral Knights time it would go something like this:

60% Arcade Running

25% Missions (Get lots of requests with Work for Idle Hands. And of course prestige).

10% Socializing

5% Grinding

The more time I spend on these forums and opening my eyes in-game, the more of an odd ball I feel like. I'd rather do arcade than FSC, I prefer Ironmight Plate over Skolver but I'm just fine with Vog Cub, I think the Fearless Rigadoon is better than the Finale Flourish, I hate Devine Avenger and Gran Faust but use Sudaruska a lot, yeah...

I never really care if my item is level 10 or not. Or if it has a powerful UV or nothing at all. The point to me is to have a large arsenal with different options. Mostly those that can be used in a lot of situations and have fun with too. Like my Recon Ranger gear. I don't think a single thing is above level 1 in that set and yet I use it more than is natural. But when I'm tired of that I may switch over to my gunner or bomber layout. And every now and a then, just for fun, I'll use something for defense. (By that I mean over half my arsenal contains defense and specialist gear).

I'll expect hate mail in the morning. Good bye for now!

Cheese armor!

Luckily, I joined SK in 2012, so I don't have everything that I want so far. After I reached Vanguard, I started looking for uvs on the auction house. I try to look for medians, but low will do it for me as well. But I do agree that the radiant drought made 5* gear rather useless. Luckily, I made some stuff 5* so the drought hasn't hit me as hard. Hopefully, the gunner update will fix this issue. Until, I have Winterfest to keep me busy.

@Bamz

The point is not to have a large arsenal with different options its to be able to develop a large arsenal with different options.

I have enough gear to mix and match, but whats the point, if I cannot develop any of it without blowing through CE and shadow keys? If I want to expand my large arsenal with different options, the game prevents me from doing so.

4* gear is vastly different from 5* gear when it comes to armor (Already have the weapons), and I already have mildly offensive gear with mild UVs. Most of the expansion that I'd be doing would include things like arcane salamander. I crafted it to use as costume, and I had a UV on it from before the updates. This is because I want to be able to use it- but without being finished fully with heat, the defensive boost it would give me is negligible, and I already have chaos set+sprite perk of fire high+volcanic demo helm/vog suit/volcanic plate mail/whatever else. I can get the same relative boost, but I can never get a feel for the armor as a whole.

And besides- you might have fun with your 4* gear now, but its only a matter of time before you need to upgrade it- eventually, you'll run out of options. Like you said, grinding is awful and the arcade is much better- how would you like to do nothing but sell shadow lair keys? You can't pay for them yourself without going broke, and its time consuming+stressful, trying to get 3 people to buy into a shadow lair 8 times per item you need to heat. Then you have to actually put in the intense concentration that uFSC demands constantly- because you're probably carrying one or two of the people in your party.

It just isn't fun.

gods ain't gonna help you, son.

I know that feel sis.
I practically stopped playing when the ce prices got up to 8k, cause I can't advance in what I want (in this case, a BTB) anymore. too much grinding to stop at 4*? no way.

Well, they obviously intended

Well, they obviously intended the forge to make players spend money in radiants and stuff, and that may also give them some incentive to release new weapons and armor since they will actually get money while doing so and everyone likes new weapons, but the problem is that the cost is TOO DAM HIGH.

and considering that there are many armors and weapons out there that are obsolete/underpowered compared to the classical mainstream of dmg bonuses and the likes, i don't think it's worth spending my money into some poorly thought out and unbalanced gear. this is a thumbs down to OOO , if you want us to give you our money for shiny virtual weapons and armor at least make a good job designing and balancing them.

@Fehzor

Please remember that I said levels 1-10, not stars 4-5. I don't mind using a weak 5* weapon as long as I actually want to use it. Power has never been a gigantic factor for me. And most 5* weapons look a lot cooler than their 4* versions too. That alone usually makes me want to upgrade. Yes, there are still quite a few 4* items I refuse to upgrade though. I said in another recent post how bad it would be for me to upgrade my Ascended Calibur to a Leviathan because of the CTR medium UV I got on it.

My major point is I judge how I play off of Fun>Looks>Utility>Power. No amount of grinding in the world could change that for me. It's also why I never believed in the "one set to end all others". I just can't bring myself to be a power house all the time. Even when given an opportunity to do so.

Ok, I spoke the next part of my mind. I'll check for hate mail in the afternoon.

@Thunder
How ironic- the BTB was originally worse than its 4* due to the charge doing less at 5*.

@Aviri
We don't know that to be true, but it probably is. They won't say why they did it, which probably means they weren't making money. But it could just be Nick being strange again. He usually does make relatively poor decisions when it comes to balance issues- messing up the drop rate would be no exception.

@Bam
Ok, theres a difference between "hate mail" and "disagreement". I'm not hating on you, you're a lovely person that cannot use charge attacks without serious investment.

The power thing is absolutely correct for me too, but I'm not going to downgrade my armor so that I can look cool. I like the feeling of progression that I get from upgrading my weapons, not the sense of disparity I get from downgrading my gear into cooler but weaker 5* versions.

Yes, I guess there is a difference. I realize that the internet is filled to the brim with trolls, jerks, and morons. These forums are no exception. So usually when I post something involving my opinion I immediately assume that I will be hated by someone for it. Then there will be those few that think they are above all others so they decide to flat out shoot down my opinion and mark me as an idiot for saying it.

As for part 2 of your post. I probably wouldn't try getting a downgraded item either unless it was for a really amazing costume idea. I made a Salamander Suit to go along with my Dragon Scale Helm for example. I don't need it but it sure looks good! Once I get Toasty Dragon Wings I will look like a dragon too. So that would be an up-side.

I'll expect troll mail in... 5 minutes.

^3000 radiant shards will get you a good distance, but I'd like to step in to remind you of how Nick promised "24 new handguns" + whatever the developers come out with at x-mas, which could easily mirror the halloween content- you'll probably want something from that. You have basically 3000/450 = six or seven new weapons that you can get. If the issue is not resolved soon enough, you'll be out of shards in no time.

If you don't run out of shards in no time, you'll be forced to resign yourself to restricted crafting anyway.

OOO is evil. I know my account is at stake for this but it's true. They made radients rare so that people would buy them so they could get more money. This is just how it works but I'm not dumb enough to fall for it.

From the patch notes here:

From the patch notes here: http://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/84730

"We are removing mist energy for a couple of reasons. First, so that elevators will stop requiring the use of energy. Second, from a design perspective, we want to encourage Spiral Knights players to experiment with more of the game than our research shows that they currently do. It turns out that providing energy to players in greater or lesser amounts does not encourage them to try out different weapons and gear, something we have always believed was a core part of the Spiral Knights experience.

Orbs of Alchemy for Crafting

Orbs of Alchemy can be found as loot drops as you play in the Clockworks, and will be used instead of energy for crafting. Orbs exist for each star level in the game (save for 0 star). As you play, you will find over time that you have more orbs than you need for the upgrade of your initial choice of weapons, and that you have the resources to build a broader arsenal of gear. This, in turn, will make it easier for Spiral Knights players to experiment with more varied equipment and gameplay styles. Orbs of Alchemy, in addition to being found in the Clockworks as loot, may be bought from the Supply Depot."

So, more gear crafting? Hm... I think I agree with Mushy.

Guys I found the solution!

Look at the game files. Please. The answer for the radiant drought is there.
If you don't see it please look harder.

I'd make a thread on this myself, but I don't think I have much time left after what I just revealed. In fact they might have sent assassins to hunt me down right n

Your Voltedge isn't safe.

Yeah.... It really sucks. Now we can't upgrade to 5* because everything is weak. Then elite orbs have like a 7% chance to appear. Everything sucks. And I don't think OOO even cares about the radiant drought. They aren't making any good decisions. It is like they read our posts, but ignore everything besides bad words and spoilers.
EDIT: Wait no! Blazzbery! No! No! RUN EVERYONE RUN! If you know spoikers they are gonna come! Wait.. who is at my door? AUGH!
