Why do download times take so long?

What is the download time determined by? I have a relatively new laptop, I'm connected to the ethernet, and I don't have any other windows open. Yet for this latest patch, it's been over an hour and I'm still stuck at 70% completion (I tried refreshing the page, but it still stays at 70%). I know it will eventually download just like the Winterfest update did, but I'm still confused as to why some people have greater downloading times than other people.

Could one of you computer-savvy people out there supply me with a reason or two?

don't know

Your computer is probably not very important to this question. What's more important is probably:
* How good is your Internet connection?
* Where are you, geographically? Are you far away from the nearest SK servers?
* Are you trying to download the patch when everyone is is trying? Do you have an easier time later?
For example, I typically download patches in a couple of minutes, soon after they are released. I'm in North America, on a not-very-fast DSL connection. My computer is a desktop. When I got it, it was quite fast, but that was four years ago.

your processor gigahertz

your processor gigahertz would be something to look at, just because its new doesn't really mean anything. I bought a laptop about 6 months ago and its only got 1.3 ghz to it.
one thing I recently did was link a couple of computers together in a cluster so I could use the processors in addition to my original one.

another factor is where your at on the globe. I live on the border of Arizona and California, and I think their server base is either in sandy eggo or san Francisco.

throw all other answers away

You said that you was trying to 'refresh' (a page) as a try to get a proper download.

So I assume that you play Spiral Knights through a gaming page like Kongregate and not via downloaded Client (exspecially because of that well-known 70%).

Since I play from Kongregate myselfe I can tell you this:

Kongregate offers only a limited set of ports. After an update there is each Kongegate player why wants to actuallise his PC, but this exceeds the data that Kongregate can transmit by far.

This results that your download time is actually increasing to some utopic numbers like '735 Minutes left'.

If this is the case, then it does not have anything to do with your PC - blame that download service.

My Suggestion:
-If you just started this game, just start all-over by creating an account on Spiral Knights itselfe.
-If you want to keep your Kongregate account/stuff/accessory, try to launch Spiral Knights with your Kongregate Information with that Spiral Knights Client. (Look in the section 'Technical issue' to check how to do it)

Nuff said

Let me clear this up. OOO's hamsters can only run so fast.. so the fact that you have a "new" laptop doesn't factor into this situation. It's the hamsters... Usually at around 60-75% they stop powering the servers for a 2 hours crumb break. They hang out with the gremlins and laugh about the players staring expectantly at their screens. Then after around 3 hours they get off their rumps and get back to powering the generators. :D

Nuff Said.

So you're saying I should send them energy-efficient hamsters?

Thanks for the info, guys.
