Battling Toxilargos as a gunner/bomber

My loadout is Needle Shot, Toxic Atomiser (UV: High vs Slimes) and a Graviton Bomb. It serves me well, mostly. My Toxic Atomiser is normally all I need for slimes.

I've started to encounter Toxilargos (http://wiki.spiralknights.com/Lichen#Toxigels) in danger rooms and such, and they kick my ass. Getting close enough to damage with the toxic is dangerous, Graviton doesn't neutralise them as a threat the way I'm used to. Never seen a Sloombargo, and at least poison will work on them, but I don't think I'll fair too much better.

I'm trying to think of better ways to fight them. Is Nitronome good against them? How do you all fight them without getting pinned to a wall by spikes? Do I need to suck it up and carry a Pepperbox? I like Needle Shots and would rather not shelve mine, and you can't always anticipate when you'll fight these things.

Any -largo Slime needs to be

Any -largo Slime needs to be zoned.
Freeze is the best way to do this.

They are pretty much impossible to fight up close so Cryotech Alchemers are the easiest way to stop their gas spreading.
Freezing Vaporizers are good, but for the most part, you will find yourself suffering at the lack of damage.

Wow, really?

First, let me say I didn't know toxigels could even merge like normal Lichens. Never seen it happen.

But the "wow, really" is for the lacking the obvious advice. As a gunslinger looking to defeat slimes, the answer is simply: Shadowtech Alchemer. All Slimes are weak to Shadow, and a Shadowtech Alchemer is the best way for a Gunslinger to mete out Shadow damage. You don't even have to get close this way. Just shoot, back up, shoot some more. Should kill Toxilargos with little trouble!

Attack distance

Yeah, I believe the OP is referring to T3 Toxigels, which have small protruding spikes and get the spin attack (they also can appear in Stratum 4 Danger Rooms.)

I think the Toxigels only do their dangerous spin attack when you are at a medium distance. So when I find a bunch of them, I'm careful to stay out of range and just let them run into a bomb's path. If I need to run past them, I'll move in so they start their spin attacks then run away quickly, shielding if I'm still in range when they launch the spikes.

I imaging you can kite them at a distance. And like Ozymandius mentioned, a gun strong against slimes would help. Needle Shot is going to do very poor damage to slimes.

Burn, toxi, burn.

Ash of Agni (or Fiery Atomizer) and Nitronome (or similar) will work well. I did fine against T3 toxigels with an Ash and Master Blast Bomb recently.

Freezing atomizer/Shivermist would also be helpful, but it won't do nearly the damage that Ash of Agni will.

For obvious reasons, your toxic atomizer falls short. If it can't inflict poison, it's pretty useless, so in this case, substitute for one of the other haze bombs.

Tip

So, you see how the giant lichen colony and its variants dash around before attacking with thorn roots? If you are close enough to said colony, you will not be hit by a single thorn! Just try not to lose so much health until the poison mist wears off.
