I want to focus with swords, so I got the wolvar set. but someone told me you should avoid getting piercing defense and that there is other defenses. Can someone tell me how to balance the defenses, whether I need to get several sets or not or anything about how the defence system works in this game?

keep in mind, shield def only applies when you defend using the shield.
i.e when you bubble yourself =p

Piercing defense is not

Piercing defense is not helpful. You'll only take Piercing damage from
1) Spike traps, which can't exactly chase you down
2) Exactly one kind of monster: the Lichen colony.

The reason everyone recommends Wolver is the useful damage bonus it gives to your swords.

Normal is the most common damage type
Elemental is the second-most-common damage type
Shadow is the third-most-common
And Piercing only exists on a predictable trap and a semi-predictable enemy.

You can keep using Wolver for the damage bonus, just try to get a shield with something other than Piercing. The Plate and Owlite shields are popular... The (Element)-break shields don't go above 3 stars, so you can't get to Tier 3 with them.

That previous post might have

That previous post might have confused you.

To clarify: Even though wolver sets give piercing defense, you should keep in mind that
1. Of all the armor sets, it currently is the best for sword users
2. When you get a wolver set, you are working towards Vog Cub. Vog cub gives great elemental defense, and also fire resistance to help you in the Firestorm Citadel, which is the latter part of tier 3, and the hardest part of the entire game.

So, even though you have piercing defense now, it will eventually be changed to the much more useful elemental defense when you get vog cub.

Also, get an owlite shield, it's quite possibly the best (or second best) shield series in the game.

Absolutely. Wolver's good

Absolutely. Wolver's good because of the damage bonus and also what it can become.

Owlite's ugly as heck until 5* but those defenses and resistances are very useful.

If you are going for Vog Cub

If you are going for Vog Cub Armor I would think the best complement on UV would be Max Shock Resist or Max Shadow Resist. As to your question about levels I believe they run.

Low
Medium
High
Very High
Ultra
Max

The higher up the scale the better off you would be.

Don't be pressured into

Don't be pressured into getting a UV for your armor. That only applies if you plan on getting hit a lot.

Indeed. The best defense is,

Indeed. The best defense is, and always will be, "Get outta the way!"

The second-best defense is your shield. Use it, abuse it, love it.
