One year ago, we gave you a Christmas surprise - a Spiral Knights fan RPG called Jempire Story. Today, after a year and a half in the making, we're proud to announce that the full Jempire Story Alpha is now available for download here http://jemgaming.net/forums/content.php?348-Jempire-Story-Releases-help-...!

We're also using the launch of the game to raise funds for a good cause - a charity called Child's Play, that seeks to improve the lives of children in hospitals nationwide.

Merry Christmas everyone! We hope you enjoy the game. :)

gods ain't gonna help you, son.

I've just started the game, and I'm already enjoying it. I'm curious to see what have you come up with with the abilities.
well, anyway, just a few things:
1 enemy health. in a turn based game, it's essential.
2 point out, stress out, do whatever you want to make people make a party. don't make them leave the guild hall if not in full party if necessary. you know better than me how is it to go forth without a party, cause I didn't.
3 good job on optional quests, not making them available till you have a character in your party was a great choice. however, say it. it's always better informing players.
EDIT:
4 crit mechanic seems a little OP at the beginning. nothing serious, I just arrived at not instakilling someone at the 4th main quest I think. (gremlin demo)
5 can't seem to find helios, where the crap is he?
more feedback as I advance through your game.

I have to download it.

Looks interesting and fun to play. But I'm not sure if my Laptop can handle it. Only one way to find out...

hero:
joke answer: my laptop almost crashed, I don't think it's suitable for them.
non-joke answer: you shouldn't have problems. it's a demo too, so you should have problems even less than anyhting you've played at.

EDIT while I'm at it:
too...many...SK puns. but I'll never forgive that 42 joke.

I found a glitch!

In the Advanced Training Hall, I was in the heart section at the left, and then I walked down below. I pressed Z too soon and the text bubble vanished. The no more text bubbles would show up, I couldn't open my menu, I couldn't talk to anyone, I couldn't get healed, and I couldn't leave. I got nasty statuses from all the panels. (As experimentation) Then I encountered one of the scuttlebots. I got this:

Pick up hearts or find them off enemies to restore small amounts of health on-the-go! Training Scuttlebot appeared!

My health was critical and I missed a turn. I healed up and trashed the Scuttlebot. Then everything was back to how it was supposed to be.

Maybe the message it gave me isn't a glitch, but idk. It didn't say that when I encountered a Scuttlebot at first.

EDIT: I got the glitch again when I walked into the room with the pots to the right. (The one above where you can fight the Scuttlebots.)

Taking quests from the jempies is rather overcomplicated. I need to talk to them in Haven, where they'll tell me they need to be in my party. My first instinct was to simply go into the guild hall, dump my current party members, and then have the quest-givers join me when I talk to them in Haven.

That simple, it was not. Instead, I had to memorize their sprites (their sprites, not their character prtraits which don't show up in the guild hall) and go through the several boxes of dialogue I'd already read before I got to the choice of recruiting them, before heading back to where they are in Haven, needing quest assistance.

Party management needs some serious streamlining, is what I'm saying. At the very least, I should be able to just swap a member out when talking to the questgiver directly.

New Build Available!

-- NEW BUILD IS UP at http://bit.ly/1g4vI6w - Just copy your Save Data over from the old build files into the new folder once you install! --

@Thunder - You figured it out! ;) Bastion is a great game well worthy of a reference... or few.

Also, thank you Demete, Thunder, Autofire, and Zeddy all for the great feedback so far. Our own testers have also been digging up as many bugs as possible, and we're combining all the feedback to update and improve future versions of the game.

Our very first update has already been added into the build, and you can download the new version by clicking the same link on the website. (Or, if you're feeling lazy, just click here: http://bit.ly/1g4vI6w ) As mentioned above, once you install it, just copy over your old sava data into the same folder and it should keep all your progress!

It adds a lot of things, but in particular, there's a critical bug involving the final mission in The Core that you'll want to download this fix for. (Otherwise, you won't be able to see the end! :))

Thanks for everyone's patience as we iron out the bugs and keep improving the game. Full update notes will be posted soon!

with the old build, I find some strange things happening on the second time you go to the bomb factory.
1 the old man in the from of it didn't dissapear till I submitted the code.
2 I didn't fight at all, I just ran into the enemies and they vanished.
3 boss fight, same as above, with a "insert battle here" tip on the bottom, then text.
4 almost every box I opened got me something. no, I mean it was written "you got something!". I was like, wut. didn't know if I actually got something or not, inventory got too full.
and btw, you might want to re-do the inventory UI. "useless junk" tab would be useful. all those items I got from that black hide-and-seek guy, that I almost never use, I would like them to go into another tab. same for books.

Gj Jemps, though it is a bit confusing to start of with. After a while of roaming around I kinda got used to it. Its a great representation of the SK haven which I particularly thought was pretty cool, also the interior of the buildings that currently dont have anything is pretty cool too. Ill add some more when I play some more. Congrats to the Jemps, this really is pretty awesome.

Full 0.1 update notes posted

Full 0.1 update notes posted here: http://forums.spiralknights.com/en/node/91475 and here in the dev forum: http://jemgaming.net/forums/showthread.php?2829-Jempire-Story-Update-Not...

@Thunder - Thanks for listing those out - all 4 have been fixed in the latest build. For the items, instead of making them junk, we'll probably make them useful instead. Work continues now on the the 0.2 build!

@Sword - Thanks! Hope you enjoy it. :)

1 you should move this to TV, after all, it's not the game itself we're talking about.
2 bump.
3 it happened again. some fights were there, some enemies just dissapeared. the arena with Maxwell, first room. EDIT: almost all of the second room's fights were missing. you should probably check them out.
EDIT:
4 re-happened again. this time, instead of something, most (almost all) boxes contained 42 cr. if you don't want to hint me something, it's a bug.
5 characters need more abilities. especially Maxwell, it should have an ability, at least. (with all those craploads of ce he has, maybe ce revive?)

The window is too small. Is there any way to make the resolution a bit wider? Other than that your game is fun and I love that it's got a mix of Final Fantasy sounds. Great job!

The game does run on Wine, so you can try that if you can't get to Windows.

moar bugs!
100% of the final arena in RJP is of fake enemies.
in aurora isles, you can't advance to the elevator if you go on a second time.
GvG for chapter 2 is almost certainly broken. the guard just says that it will be harder, and then the bubble goes away. same if you try to buy something that isn't a rocket sprocket from the vendor in the arena.
I also have a greige player color in my inventory and it doesn't do anything.
EDIT: you need to tell which characters can DW and which don't. cause I'm raging to see that my party leader can't do it.
also, moar weapons please. I still have a swift flourish, and I can buy 3. finally, what weapons can be upgraded precisely?

reroute this thing to the top!

well anyway, reached endgame. didn't save for 2 little reasons:
1 you have to tell that you'll need two parties down there. I went there, and without knowing I got my characters doomed cause their level was too low.
2 all enemies in the castle vanished on touch. I would like to level in that place.

more things:
3 Maxwell is in your guild, so bring it down there. really, I had it in my main team and I was about to level him.
4 reset the zones when you complete them. not only aurora isles. the gloaming wildwoods were absolutely empty.

it has GvG, but it's probably to make jokes on other LD guilds. it's all based on the good old turn based RPG model.
only story, names and background are based on SK (except some levels). the rest is a different thing.

Now port it to GBA, if you

Now port it to GBA, if you actually did it in C without x86 assembly crap or microsoft proprietary API crap.

If you want a list of all the GBA input/output stuff, see http://nocash.emubase.de/gbatek.htm
I'm actually serious about offering GB/GBC/GBA support... I've written emulators for them (GameBoy Color, GameBoy Advance).

Just make sure you compile out to the ARMv4T instruction set mtuned to the ARM7TDMI processor if you do. You'll need some inline assembly in place to handle special interrupt or BIOS ROM stuff. Also strip all floating point stuff and use fixed point integer logic and try to convert integer divides to integer multiplication if you're serious about porting. Old school ARM doesn't support hardware integer division or any floating point. If you want integer divide by a power of two with rounding down then use an arithmetic or logical right shift instruction. Game logic is tied so that it can be done while the screen renders and updates and the game logic can update graphics parameters in a buffer during such a period that can then be copied out during vblank. After you're done with the vblank copies and updates you re-call your main entry again to game logic. Audio is not tied to game logic (it's in its own thread dispatched by IRQ/DMA logic), and only updates its threads upon reading shared memory of the main thread. If you wind up making it, you'll probably have pointers to pointers for handling nasty IRQ stuff and the actual game logic so you don't if/else chain it or busy loop it out. If you don't know what an IRQ is, it's interrupt request, and it basically switches the CPU to entirely different CPU context so it runs another "program/thread" within the same memory as the user-space code your game logic is in, while your previous thread is frozen in place, even if it was doing something.

In other words, you better hope you're using integer logic only and know that all your "threads" will not be memory safe and a fault in one can blow up the memory of your other threads. Also there's no graphics driver, you're working with the graphics ASIC via hardcoded pointers in a shared memory space.

@Petater

While I've always liked the idea of making games for GB and stuff, it feels like it would serve little or no purpose to port an already made PC game to GBA simply because probably no one would play it on anything but an emulator on you guessed it, PC.
