Are some Basil ports rarer than others?

I swear, I've been through tier 2 basil at least 30 times and not once did I ever see him with an Avenger recipe. Which leads me to believe that particular ports are rarer than most significantly. I don't want to spend 15k on an Avenger in AH when I can just get it for 10k with Basil, and score some crowns and tokens doing JK, but I'm starting to get desperate.

So my question to is: Are particular recipes rarer than others?
And: How long did it take you until Basil stopped trolling you and gave you the Avenger recipe?

Basil != Troll

Basil, unfortunately, is pretty much completely random. Sadly, that means that every time you go there, there's an equivalent chance for every recipe, including the ones you've already seen. That means that sometimes we all have good experiences with it, but we often also have bad ones.

Personally, I found an avenger recipe the second run I ran after starting to look. I found another 3 times later and sold it for some quick crowns. But the heavy plate shield on the other hand... I waited a good 30, maybe 40 runs before seeing one.

Probability may be trolling you, but poor Basil over there is just doing his job...

In response to your second

In response to your second question, some of them have taken me quite a while. However, I had the same apprehension as you. I did not want to buy basil ports (before the patch) and pay an extra 2-3k crowns for my recipe. Instead I just kept running Jelly King. Actually I think it paid off, because there are very few bosses or 'culminating' points in this game yet so finally getting my recipe was a really fun and big deal. On top of that I made SOOooo much money running JK after Basil that I didn't really have problems making the items.

If you get recipes too close together (usually by buying them) you start to get crunched on CE and materials when you go to make them all (leading to typically buying materials on the auction house or CE via $$). I think it's healthier to just keep running for the recipe and keep it spaced out.

Keep in mind you can also run teir 3 for basil. If you can find a good party it's quite fast, and the recipes are 4* and 5* (sometimes) so you can usually sell the 5* ones for a decent profit. The stratum leading up to him usually has no heat or money though :/

Any recipe could potentially

Any recipe could potentially take days, even weeks, to find on your own through Basil, because it's randomly selected, and a random amount each time. You might get a Basil with just a handful of Recipes, or maybe a lot of Recipes. You might get one that has what you're looking for, or absolutely nothing you're looking for.

You're doing it wrong when

You're doing it wrong when you hunt 4* recipes in tier 2. I mean, enjoy your eternal wait for the wanted roll.

Color me confused

"You're doing it wrong when you hunt 4* recipes in tier 2. I mean, enjoy your eternal wait for the wanted roll."

I thought you had to have 4* gear to get to T3. Sounds circular to me.

Basil has 2-4* stuff in T2.

Basil has 2-4* stuff in T2. Before Kozma, this was the only way to get your 4* set to unlock T3 clearance.

He has 4-5* stuff in T3. If you've already got clearance, it's easier to find 4* stuff there since there are fewer recipes for him to choose from.

A quip

Since I first entered T3 I've been looking for a Grey Owlite Shield recipe. Out of the dozens of times, I've never seen one for sale. Finally I just broke down yesterday and got it on the trade channel as it was the last 5* recipe I needed. Definitely random, the bastard. He deserves every potion thrown at his head.
