I am about to hit Tier 3 soon, I just need a 4* gun, helmet and shield. I know what helmet and gun I'm getting, but I don't know what to get for my shield. Should I upgrade my Twisted Targe or get a new shield?

This would depend on your own style.

There are some shields that are weaker than others but provide better offensive output. Most others give you standard defense for a specific situation. There are also a few that are designed to give a little bit of defense for every situation.

So what shield to take would depend on your own play style. If you are a sword user, upgrading your Twisted Targe will be a good idea. If you like fast attacking with both guns and swords, take a Swift Strike Buckler. It's one of the weakest shields in the game (even for 3* standards) but it will be commonly used in tier 3 thanks to it's powerful buff.

Some good all purpose shields would be the Plate Shields and Shells. Owlite Shields are good at resisting offensive status effects like fire and shock while the Skelly Shields are nice at resisting debuffs such as poison and freeze.

So I would recommend:
Owlite
Skelly
Plate
Shell
Targe (if offensive sword user)
Swift Strike (if willing to sacrifice major defense for major offense)

It should be noted that the Swift Strike will not get you access to the higher ranks so make sure you are keeping a cheap shield like Defenders ready for easy and quick 4*-5* shield passage.

...

don't ever upgrade defender shield if you could only afford 1 set of armors at this moment. For me, targe is good enough if I have problem with swiftstrike, but I would recommend more tankier shield like owlite, volcanic plate or uh... I don't know.

Upgrade your Targe. You will

Upgrade your Targe. You will need it sooner or later.

You don't ask, but when you can craft more, I recommend getting at least these 3 shields for defensive purposes:

Barbarous Thorn Shield (piercing). This was also my first 5* shield.
Crest of Almire (shadow). For FSC and later UFSC, the most lucrative farming areas. Though it's slightly harder to get.
Grey Owlite (elemental).

Those were my first 3 shields (in that order). After I got them and the swiftstrike, I didn't craft any new shields for a long time. There was simply no need.

agree

I agree with the other posters here. You want Barbarous Thorn Shield (for sword offense), Swiftstrike Buckler (for all offense), Grey Owlite Shield (for great defense), or possibly Volcanic Plate Shield (for defense in the Vanaduke fight). I'm giving the 5-star names; you can figure out the lower-star shields that lead to them. Later, you will probably also get Crest of Almire.

Do not upgrade Defender or any Cobalt armor. You want armor that offers offensive bonuses, or at least good protection; Defender/Cobalt has poor protection and no offensive bonuses.

Hmm.

With the Radiant Drought, I think it's best to upgrade the shields that give bonuses. In this case (or pretty much any), the Twisted Targe should be upgraded, as its 5* counterpart gives medium sword damage as opposed to its current low bonus.

Dont go swiftstrike or you'll

Dont go swiftstrike or you'll ve quite annoyed when you go for that Vanguard rank in the future.

I say stick with Twisted targe line. If you need a super tank shield, go with Plate/Oega Shell.

Other then that, shields will just waste your money.

Youll learn soon enough that SSB is prbly best shield for T3, but dont get it until after u have a 5* shield or achieved vanguard rank.

First

First shield I crafted was Owlite. Then work towards CoA..

I just recently crafted a twisted targe and got fire and elemental med uvs. made a dark thorn... gonna be one good BTS.

And it allows me to deal a hefty amount of damage.
