Video recordings and other trash

I've always wanted to record and edit together neat little videos of Spiral Knights for my (nonexistant) YouTube audience as well as for the fun of it, but I can't seem to choose which of the options would be optimal for my cruddy little laptop. So, I turned to the worst possible place to ever ask a question SK related, the ever-loving forums!

This video and this video uses Archives ripped from my twitch account when I streamed various missions for my friends. It involves use of xsplit to allow me to stream at relatively stable FPS, but poor audio quality. The audio quality being the trade-off for live commentary. (My voice is horrendous, and my jokes are unfunny, yay!)

This video is showcasing a more notable and humorous moment, with the in-game audio replaced entirely with silly music. It is also recorded using xsplit, yet the audio quality is crisper.

This video is a test run of the Fraps demo, so forgive the short clips. I enjoy the fact that this records the game audio almost perfectly, and allows me the freedom to do stuff in my movie editors to add my own soundtracks or just record whatever I'm listening to at the time. Unfortunately, it seems as though live-commentary can't be a thing with this.

And then there's this trainwreck in which I use Bandicam's demo to do a full depth, recording in-game audio clearly at a much more stable frame-rate than fraps, at the cost of a bit of discoloration in the editing process. Most likely due to an outdated or missing codec. What this one allows me to do is not only record in-game audio, it also allows for live commentary as well as post-commentary.

I'm leaning towards purchasing a Bandicam license more than the prior options, but I'm not entirely positive.

You can do live commentary with fraps

If you're using the latest version (i.e., not pirating it) there should be an option to "include external microphone". I'm not at my computer right now, but it definitely records voice if you want it to.

Ugh, don't use fraps, use Bandicam. It allows you to actually record more than 30 seconds at a time.

@Fangel; I see. It's nice to know Fraps still has the option to record via microphone.

@Hex; Is Fraps' full version limited to the 30 seconds per clip? If that's the case, that nails the coffin for me.

Bandicam is well worth the $40 instead of the effort of trying to get around that watermark.

Fraps is nice

You can record videos for as long as you want with the full version, and you have the option to split recordings every 4 GB if you don't want some massive file for an hour of recording.

Granted, a fraps license is 37 or 39 USD last I checked if you are just buying one. You can also use fraps to view your frames in games and take screenshots. I've used it for a few years now and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

The only bad thing is you can't choose for fraps to record a certain section of your screen, but it auto-detects most games (only one that it hasn't detected for me is "The Binding of Isaac", but that's a flash game) so that's convenient. You can have it record your entire desktop if you want too, and there are several other features that I don't use, but you might.

Hope that helps!

Psst...You wanna buy some magic?

I actually got my full fraps completely for free.

...I mean, I paid for it, like a good person. :D

I'd say go download Open

I'd say go download Open Broadcasting Software, OBS.

The videos are in HD, and I think for every 20 minutes of recording it take up 750mb of space, which is less than fraps if I remember it correctly.

Oh and it's free.

Fraps delivers good performance while recording in addition to uncompressed AVI files. It's sizey but the quality is terrific.
