Armor calculation

Is there any way someone could tell me the calculation that gets used for determining damage dealt to the player? It had assumed at first, that if the armor any resistance to the particular damage type received, then the armor would be ignored, but if that's true, then there is a massive problem.

Consider, that because enemies in tier 1 only do normal damage, and the Divine mantle has elemental and shadow resistance, but no normal, then you'd be better off wearing your starter armor, then that particular 5* armor if you were in the lowest levels.

Likewise; Heavy Plate mail, a 4* armor, has only normal resistance, and so would be useless in the 6th strata, where enemies no longer deal normal damage.

This seems like a huge oversight, and i would really appreciate it if someone could alleviate my fears.

It depends on the thing trying to kill you, no matter the depth.

Assuming you're doing t3 Elite, many melee attacks still do normal damage, while a lot of projectiles do pure specialized damage. Stand in front of a Trojan sword slam and you'll get a ton of Normal Damage and no Shadow, Lumbers and Thwackers will do split Normal and Elemental, and turrets will simply laugh at Plate Armor with their pure Elemental, Shadow or Piercing, depending on the turret.

Also, in the deeper t1 depths on Elite, many enemies start doing split damage. Just ask my Heater Shield (Normal+Elemental+Freeze), which doesn't last as long against the Snarbolax compared to 2* and 3* Defenders (Normal+Piercing), in spite of its 5 stars worth of Normal defense.

As for actual mathematical calculations..... Well, that'll just make my head hurt. Either way, it boils down to looking at the damage bars that pop out when you get hit by an attack.

Enemies on the 5th and early 6th Strata still do split normal-specialized, although the normal slice of the pie gets progressively smaller depending on your difficulty and depth.

wiki Defense

Try reading the wiki article Defense. But it is being written by players, and there is a lot that we still don't understand.

To address your question: Yes, my understanding is that low-level armor with a bit of normal protection would be better than Divine armor, against normal-heavy threats. Yes, Plate armor protects very little against (say) pure shadow projectiles. You're talking about the fundamental rules of the game here. It's not a design flaw. It's armor vs. no armor.

Alright, that's a bit better

Alright, that's a bit better then. Someone told me that past a certain depth, nothing deals normal damage, so I was a bit dismayed when i saw that that was all plate armor defended against. It makes sense that the magic based Divine armor would be bad vs. a lumber, and that plate armor would be bad vs. shadow.

I'm still a bit on edge about the idea that a 1* armor set could be better then a 5* set (one that can potentially take hours upon hours to make) in some ways. It kinda feels like a slap in the face; "your endgame armor, that you've been building up towards the whole time you've been playing, you're better off with your starter gear for this level"

Actually...

Just to confuse you more... I've noticed that defensive 0* armor (such as mining helmet) provides more protection than just about all 5* armor in T1 areas (Plate armor not tested [due to not being heated], and Ancient Plate Helm provides almost double the resistance). Having said that, that 0* mining helmet falls off sharply in T2 areas as being pretty useless and the 5* armor normally provides offensive boosts that pose it as more advantageous to use over that 0*/1* armor.

There's still quite a bit we don't know.

"Someone told me that past a certain depth, nothing deals normal damage"

They were wrong, most enemies just get a 100% specialised attack. However, almost all of them retain their 100% Physical attack.
For example, a Kat in Tier 1 has a 100% Normal damage bite. A Kat in Tier 2 has a 100% Normal damage bite, and shoots a bullet that is 50% Shadow and 50% Normal. A Kat in Tier 3 has a 100% Normal damage Bite, and shoots three bullets that are 100% Shadow. (Note, the bullet still does split damage in Normal difficulty).

"I'm still a bit on edge about the idea that a 1* armor set could be better then a 5* set"

Any 1* armour that you can think of, there's a 4*/5* version that's better.

A few specific armour sets:

1* Vitasuit -- 4* Vitasuit Deluxe
1* Cyclops Helmet -- 5* Shadowsun Stetson, 5* Black Kat Cowl
1* Fencing Jacket -- 5* Skolver Coat, 5* Snarbolax Coat
1* Breaker Armours -- 5* Wolver Lines, 5* Demo Lines, 5* Magic Lines

I'm simply listing these armours because they give special bonus.

"I've noticed that defensive 0* armor (such as mining helmet) provides more protection than just about all 5* armor in T1 areas"

So just like shield health?

non-normal armors

There are three non-normal armors in the game: Divine, Radiant Silvermail, and Dragon Scale. These armors are situational in their use, because normal threats are everywhere. Almost always you want to combine them with some normal armor. So, for example, there is almost no use for the full Divine set. And, because Veil has the fiend bonus but Mantle doesn't, this means that Divine Mantle is extremely close to useless.

By the way, we have been discussing such imbalances for years. This is all old news. Don't expect any prompt changes from the game developers.

@Dibsville

All shields (except the omega line) have the same hp on depths 1-3. 0* shields stop getting more health at that point. 1* stops at the end of stratum 2, and so on.

I expect a similar phenomena to occur with shields resisting damage - an iron buckler resisting more damage than BTS in S1 areas, but haven't gotten the time to test it yet.
