On second look, I almost think that the shadow boxes will create a graviton vortex (such as the one the Tortodrone is stuck in).

Ok so the boxes are important, but what's up with that little shrine area in the top-right corner of the first pic? As for the boxes, they probably do have a vortex effect, look at the box in the bottom-right corner of the second pic and you'll see a small vortex effect coming from it.
The non-purple explosive boxes appear slightly different from the orange ones we typically see in the clockworks. Assuming that they are different and not merely explosive boxes with updated textures, I'm guessing that destroying one of these red boxes scatters out explosive blobs like blast cubes.
Unless those blobs are from the Tortodrone...

fun fact: volcanic pepperbox is actually balanced against the normal wapons, so with knowckback and everything, it is a decent weapon already.

I think that pet in hat is more interesting that shadow blocks.
It appears as if the purple blast boxes implode into vortexes.

They all laughed when I got my Volcanic Pepperbox, well who's laughing now? Also, I do wonder about that shrine that poomph pointed out. It surely can't just be cosmetic right?
Also, note that the other blast boxes have a weird circle core thing, like a jelly.
now if you look at the top-left corner of the first pic, you can see a dead tortodrone, like the ones found in Wolver Dens.

There's a magic circle to the right, and those purple blocks look like T3 explosive jellies.
They don't seem like T3 Jellies to me, all I see is that graviton vortex effect emanating from the center circle.
It better be just be a Shadow Blast Box, a Vortex Box would be so annoying..
Shadow blast box is something that was removed because it was too hard. It has come back! Yay!
as far as i can guess, those red explosive blocks drop explosive globs, like the jellies, and the shadow block seems to be a vortex
