I recently found a USB N64 controller that I want to buy (N64 is one of my favorite consoles) and i'm wondering if I would be able to use said USB controller as a way of playing spiral knights.
I have a question...
There are programs like joy-to-key (use Google) that will do the trick for you. Hope that helps.
Some controller software can emulate any key so you can emulate WASD controller and just switch your mouse clicks for keyboard keys and emulate those with your software...
Hope this helps.
I have a Logitech controller that works like that. I prefer my X360 afterglow but it won't work with SK (and I'm too lazy to make it work), but config itself automaticly with most games like SR4 and Rayman. Logitech takes longer since I have to make a profile for each game so the buttons are saved according to each games.
It should work perfectly fine. As long as it doesn't require any special drivers, anyway!
I'm absolutely serious on this one, trust me. As a Linux user, I know exactly how to SK interfaces with Joysticks...it's quite simple, to be honest!
Gamecube controllers should be the controllers used for PCs, not those ugly Xbox controllers because GC controllers were meant to be held by human hands instead of cyborgs.
I do not know as I have never really tried with any sort of controller, but i'm sure that what Autofire said would make sense. Why do you feel keyboards aren't working for you?

IDK why but SK can't use my X360 afterglow controller... I simply cannot make it work while I simply launch Saints Row 4 and it automaticly uses my 360 controller with the default setting...

People consider me as a robot when they see me play DMC4 with a controller with default setting. Also GC controller as less buttons for "modern" games... only 1 bumper buttons. Gamecube controller and 360 are really similar IMO... (I'm holding both atm, having a GC and a 360, the handles are roughly at the same distances and the buttons are roughly at the same place... just in a different pattern)
The N64 is an ugly controller that some people couldn't even use because of how far away to joystick is to the A,B and C buttons arrows... and Z... you'd have to put the controller down and play "on" it

Did you go to Options\controls\custom\input gamepad controls?
Did you go to Options\controls\custom\input gamepad controls?
This is the least helpful information I ever had...
Again, the 360 controller automaticly work with my PC. The drivers are pre-loaded since it's a MS product, there is nothing I do to make it work on SR4, I simply launch SR4 and touch my controller. Or take my keyboard and mouse to swap if I wanna play with a keyboard... Rayman Legends is the same thing... so does Loadout (an early access game)
If you can't be clear with instructions on how to help then simply don't.
By default, there's no gamepad bindings setup. You either have to manually switch to gamepad controls in options (WASD movement is what you have be default) or make custom controls for gamepad which can be also found in options.
I've had to go through rebinding my xbox controller too. I was really frustrated too. So can you not take your anger out on me?
By default, there is on my 360 controller. Steam games that work with it set itself ups automatically since those games already have 360 controller mapping. I have 0 to do when playing SR4.... I never had to do anything but on Loadout (which was easy enough)
But whenever I'm mapping my keys with the game controller, my buttons doesn't register... for any sort of reason... but I can map it on Loadout (I changed the config and finally ditched the controller for keyboard instead, easier now)
I am not angry at you. I just go to school and write paragraph on how to uses Word as homework and it goes in the line of...
"Click on the icon of Words on the top left of your corner" "then head to options in the bottom of the window and click on it, another window should pop-up"
And then I got your "Did you go to Options..." it's like... "did you tried turning it off and on?"... "did you tried ctrl + alt + delete?" it's not helping in any way shape or form... Options where? I have thousands if not millions of places that I can go into options...
So... do you uses any sort of software with your 360 controller? (I don't) Do you rebind your xbox controller key into the game or off game? If you emulate keyboard press into 360 buttons press with a software then it's quite normal what you telling me doesn't work...
By default, controllers don't usually have in-built automatic driver setups. A driver is basically the platform between the computer and the hardware, and needs to be installed for the hardware to work. Everytime you plug in something : hard drive, thumbdrive, mouse... they will usually automatically install the device. If you don't see this, you probably don't have the device driver installed.
A simple thing to do is just go online and search for device drivers. Xbox 360 controllers seem to have automatic driver setup, but probably, and most likely not for the N64 controller.
From what i've read from you guys and other research i've got to download a program that will be able to make the controller useful.
In which case is there any one that someone would suggest? I use a mac and I would prefer a free program if possible.
I'm just wondering if you have anything else that came in with what you've bought. If the N64 controller comes with a so-called adapter, then it should have some sort of automatic driver install. Otherwise, they might give a CD to allow you to install the driver.
Another problem is probably whether Spiral Knights will be able to recognize an n64 controller. I've only seen n64 controllers work with their emulators.
well I haven't actually bought it yet (this is me trying to determine what I can use it for) but from what i've seen its just the controller itself... no CD, no adapter, just the controller.
I had a friend in-game test out his controller he has (its very similar to a N64 controller but designed to be used on a computer rather than an exact replica)
and he uses a driver for it (I don't know if it came with the driver or not ill have to ask) but he said the game couldn't recognize the controller...
I still cant tell if I actually would be able to use the controller because people keep saying I can while others say I can't. I'm wondering if it would be better to get an adapter and just use the N64 controller I already have for the actual console if you're saying the adapter comes with an automatic driver.
Just a guess, but is your firewall blocking driver installation? Uninstall and then reinstall drivers. I am sorry as I don't have a definite answer because I now use keyboard and mouse.
If you wondering, I do not have an afterglow. All I have is a gamestop refurbished wired xbox controller. Search online i guess. (Afterglows come wired or wiress models).
It should work so long as the controller itself works and you have the correct software. Here are your options:
- Xpadder (emulates mouse+keyboard input. Not free)
- Joy2Key (haven't used it but it should be roughly same as above but free)
- PPJoy (creates a virtual joystick that you can map other joysticks to. Also supports input from GlovePIE. Kinda hard to get to run 'cause it's made for computers from 15 years ago)
- x360ce (a wrapper for XInput which is what Xbox 360 controllers use)
ControlMK is another free one, that works for even those crappy controllers you can buy from WalMart or whatever.
Okay let me get this straight. I repair pc on daily basis. I know how to download a driver. My controller is working (as stated above). Windows 7 and onward download automatically drivers on it's own for 90% of usual stuff like controller, microphone, keyboard, mouse. Having to download a software is only to maximize your product potential (like my steelseries keyboard that has 17 macro works automatically when plugged but I have to dl the software to make said macro)
If you don't know how to help then don't. Read what I said... Controller work fine on SR4 and Rayman, nothing to do since the drivers are installed automatically since 360 afterglow are USB devices. (I feel like I'm talking to ignorant kids)
By default, controllers don't usually have in-built automatic driver setups No but Windows 7 was design to go get that driver on it's own. Haven't you noticed how keyboard and mouses doesn't come with software anymore? My 150$ Blue Yeti Microphone didn't need any driver to download in order for me to use.
I don't think people understand the problem here... SK doesn't register 360 afterglow. If you have a 360 afterglow controller and play SK then maybe you can help me. If you don't use one and don't know then kindly say nothing. Those 6 replies said nothing helpful in any way shape or form.
I sell Mac/PC/ipads/android tablets to people like you that doesn't understand basic informatic. I multibox Steam. I know what gpedit.msc does (unlike most of you).... I can even recover your HDD data when you will cry about it.
But I am not gonna spend a day on a god damn 360 controller
It should work just fine. I've used my USB N64 controller before.
Can't help but notice you got your high and mighty act from League of Legends or some other MOBA :P Like I said a few posts ago search on youtube/google.
@Shamanalah
Cool.
Anyway, as a last resort, try JoyToKey. It adds an extra layer of complication, but will do the job if all else fails.
Since you don't seem like a Linux user and you seem to know what you're doing, I will have to say nothing else.
Wait a second...this is Farfretch'd, but try uninstalling (or disabling) the Xbox driver and force Windows to fall back to the generic driver. I don't know much about Xbox controllers so sorry if this is a crazy suggestion, but I know that SK will take generic controllers.

Dunno why he didn't do that from the start. It's a fairly simple solution, and it's easily managable. Is he "too upper class" to rely on backwater solutions to compatability issues? Not everything comes with a driver to make things wonderful all the time. He would hate those games that have issues with 64 bit windows then (say goodbye to EA Windows 98/XP games like SimCity, the PSM games on PC98, don't even get me started on games compatable with some models of Android phone but not others, or the dreaded hello world that requires a Virtual PC graphics card, and the erogos series with the same issue.)
@Hex
Well, he does have another game pad which he is using. He's just saying that he prefers the Xbox one...
And fiddling with JoyToKey does take a better part of an hour. AND you don't have analog support. (Which was never that great, but aiming can't be done very well without it.)
You know, once I get a new gamepad, I will have to mess around with JoyToKey, since you can control the mouse using it...hehe! With that I could be mouse-free! :D
The program I use handles analogue stick support perfectly fine.

So does everything else that requires compatibility arrangements. And the best part is? It'll never change. Controllers will always be released with shoddy drivers and games will never cater to that because there's just way too many to factor.
If you want to use a controller, these are things you have to expect. If you don't like that fact, use a console.
Same thing goes if you've got an Azerty. Remapping every key in a game the first time you play it becomes standard.
Sham speaking (at school atm, this is my alt, surprise!!! It's about time the forum knows about it)
and I'd like to thank Hexzyle and Autofire for being helpful.
And yeah the point is to not use a software to map my buttons... That's why I love my afterglow, it automatically instal and works with 99% of games. It has a different pattern then 360 or One controller though (funny enough, I had to change it a bit on Saints Row to have a 360 feel). I feel like I'm wasting my time mapping keys when the controller "shouldn't" need to.
My logitech gamepad uses a software to map keys and even has profile to save the mapping for SK, lets say, and another for SR but I'm WAYYYYY to lazy to do one profile for each. Or even one profile at all... I don't feel confortable when mapping my keys oddly enough (you should see me play on 360 controller on DMC4... with default controller XD).<

Reading this made me remember... I got my logitech right before the dash n shield bash update. And already knew about Battle Sprites... So I knew I had more keys to set and just decided to give up setting controller maps for SK... The very few time I played with that controller I hated it because of those sluggish triggers. I wanted to try SK with an afterglow but never achieved it and decided to give up after many failed attemps and a lot of time wasted.
I don't think so, I'm pretty sure most Steam games, including SK, use Xbox 360 controller only or something. Otherwise I would use my SNES controller to play SK.
