So as I practice gunning in lockdown(especially when training in 1vs1) it seems that the enemy somehow manages to get near me.. quickly and strike a blow or two. The first few encounters are actually fine and I go out without a scratch but after that it seems like the enemy has cracked my strategy. So I would like to ask, any tips for gunning in general ?
Gunning in lockdown
Everything Tenkii said makes sense, and is great. Truthfully speaking, in the midst of action, it's going to be too much to remember and put into practice until you get more experience. Just learn to stay alive and rain bullets in their paths. Sooner or later they'll get hit. Shoot behind you sometimes when fighting more than one person.
if the strike swordy is really chasing you aggressively, then only shoot once and boost away. Don't get greedy and shoot twice. And as always, move erratically so people can't predict where you're going.
That didn't work hades, we tried that during the 1v1s.
well if it didn't work, then your movement or reflexes is poop. try different movement.
Well, I'm usually the striker in our training sessions, so apparently your moves are poop, dove.
You dun goofed the URL. To put a URL on these awful forums, you'll have to either just paste it as it is and the site will automatically make it clickable (with the exception of a few instances that cause it to not happen for some reason) or write:
(a href="url")Text that's clickable(/a), with ( and ) replaces with < and >, naturally.
I actually got more input from this thread then expected.
@Tenkii great advice, will try to employ into my own fighting style. Thanks for the advice(really looks like you put time and effort into the post, props for that)
@son-of-hades
that is actually a good strategy, although can be sometimes hard to use. Will try though.
@Dumb-spiral-knight
I've been trying to do that but it can be difficult to dodge sometimes, the hit stun thing I will work on though
@everybody
Lets keep these tips and tricks coming. I could use more strategies on how to dodge, what kind of loadouts are best for what kind of situations etc etc Anything which you think is helpful will be read and will be appreciated
honestly you can't just tell somebody how to dodge. everyone has their opinion on what works best based on their control scheme, loadout, etc.
Rather than asking others on how exactly to dodge, I suggest you simply play around with different things and see what works and what doesn't. If you really like a certain person's style, then the best thing to do is spectate them. Recording yourself and watching the mistakes you make can be helpful, too. If you can't record yourself, then just think about why it is that you died each time you're killed.
Sry my advice is pretty vague, but this is the kind of thing that you do with pretty much anything you want to get better at.
@Djdovis:
It's just a matter of thinking ahead, really. There's currently one recent video of me playing in a 1v1 (see description for rounds). I don't play anywhere near the perfection I'd like myself, but at the very least, there are some moments where they're spot on. You might be able to pick out some of those predictions from that match. Try going to the LD Real Players tourney thread, watch any of the videos of people playing and see if you can correctly guess when/where their opponents will attack. You might lose a little bit of agency because you're not controlling the character (so some of the pre-meditated setups won't be obvious), but it's a sort of training anyway. It might make you a better player overall, aside from just gunning.

Another advantage that guns have over most swords is that their regular shots can deal statuses, so don't take those lightly. Only the more expensive and specialized armor sets can really gain immunity to Moderate level statuses, which usually means they sacrifice damage bonuses if they're really about avoiding your statuses. If you push someone to that point, imagine it as a sudden gain in defense.
That said:
Freeze is devastating in 1v1, and can help get you out of situations when you're outnumbered
Shock is also devastating in 1v1 if you're accurate, and even more devastating when you have teammates to help kill faster
Fire is... for longer battles if you can't hit often (ex: kiting, guarding) or want to deal damage after death
Poison reduces attack and defense. It's nice.
If you have the gun variety to do so, counterpick your most significant opponent's armor with something they lack resistance against:
[Kat+shadowsun, Snarbolax, Skolver] lack Elemental defense, so Nova driver will deal the most damage
[Vog, Chaos, Mercurial Demo, Skolver] lack Shadow defense, so Umbra driver/Blackhawk lines will deal most effective damage
[Divine set, Dragonscale] lack Normal defense, so Valiance really hurts them.
Added bonus for recon: if you deathmark, you remove their defense, letting you break past the 'ineffective' damages and overall just kill faster. Valiance is so amazingly good with deathmark.
Be special and use your own battle style XD
regards Comics and if doesnt work then try anither battle style
@son-of-hades
I do get what you are saying, however there is sometimes some tricks to dodging eg charing directly towards a striker when they charge towards you. I will try a bit more on dodging on my own.
@Tenkii
You should really write wiki pages... Really helpful advice and will try to use it. I'll switch out storm driver to hail driver because freeze does seem nicer over the random shock spasms. I will also watch your video and will just practice dodging on targets
Basic tip:
Lead shoot - Where you see yourself and where you see your bullets aren't necessarily where the server sees them. Depending on your own latency, you'll have to figure out for yourself how much time you'll need to "miss ahead" and compensate for to make the server think that you and/or your bullets are really there.
-----
Competitor tip:
It applies to every matchup (and pretty much every competitive situation), but keep trying to read your opponent's moves. Due to latency (and yes, I deal with it myself even at 4 bars), you can't rely on 'reaction' shots, especially vs strikers. So at the point they start to dash towards you, you can imagine they have some predefined "moves" that they'll try to pull to attack you. Obviously, people don't really work like that, but it'll get you in the mindset of finding and countering patterns.
For example (vs melee strikers):
The lowest-level and most straight-forward move is for them to dash directly towards you and attack (ex: Hammer dash). For this, you just have to aim directly towards them and your bullet will interrupt their movement or their attack.
Next level: They expect you to shoot directly towards them, so they move slightly at an angle then try to hit you from the side. At this point, they have "two" possible sides to attack you from, and you can try to shoot a bullet (or if you have more than 2 bullets in your gun's magazine, shoot twice) to try to block their approach before they reach you.
Higher level: They expect you to expect them, so they'll make themselves look like they'll approach from one direction then suddenly change directions and attack from a different one. In this case, you'll have to try your best to either hit them before the direction change, find and cut off the pattern, or try to pull/kite them into a single approaching angle (bring their approach back into your control) to simultaneously dodge and control.
There are also some mindgames you can play with people too:
- Shooting slightly angled in one direction can force them to approach from the other one
- For some reason, people like to attack from behind, so if you purposefully face one direction, you can influence them to approach from the other one.
And from that point, you can get back to blocking their paths.
There are also other patterns that you might see, especially when fighting hybrids and even pure gun users, but again, it goes down to figuring out your opponent and moving your fist in the way of their step before they take it.
At first, you'll probably be playing prediction for each hit (not a bad thing, cause it keeps you unpatterned as well), but depending on how patterned their movements are, you can even start to pull entire chains of moves before they do them. It's cool and a little frightening when you get to the point that you look/feel like you're "telling" them to go somewhere and they do it XD
Future-aim > auto target
