It's actually the point of the practice of prototyping.

In the past, people would write huge design docs, and then everyone would follow the instructions until the end, whether the original idea was good or bad (waterfall process). The more modern approach is more of making a full 'thing' that 'works', then building little bits on top of it, testing it out, getting feedback, then building on it again (iterative process) - at which point you can find out whether or not something is good before you put too much work in one direction.

But before that (or even during it), there's design work, and in most design fields nowadays (video games, websites, etc), people are encouraged to create 'throwaway' pieces that show the core idea and flow of how things work to see if the core experience is any good before deciding to throw the huge machine of workers at building it.

I worked on a mobile game once and the core idea and gameplay of the game were terrible, but we kept getting pushed to build more and more stuff on top of it. From the beginning, the idea was bad, but they were stubborn and kept trying to polish a turd. I ended up leaving that place before the inevitable failure, but it goes to show how important a good design/feedback process is.

There are enough games out there that I don't need to list them, but there are examples of the opposite where the developers would throw the budding game out live, get feedback from early players, then build the game for them. But then again, those games also tend to be pay-to-own (which are pretty much always going to be higher quality than micro transaction games).

You know...

There was once a time when Runescape, the so called SK famous "nub game and if it gets any close to SK then will shove a magma driver up someone's" game talk. But when I revisited, I was deeply surprised. Runescape 3 ACTUALLY has a system that allows players to vote what kind of game development they would do. VOTE! Absolutely amazed. This made Runescape like 500% better. If only SK would actually listen to their players more and have a game development changing future like runescape, there may still be hope for SK. Otherwise, might as well shut SK down forever or slap a 60 dollar retail price on SK.

:P

Hypothetically, if SK (or any micro-transaction-based game) suddenly turned into a pay-once retail game, it'd mean the designers would no longer need to focus on silly things like paywalls, and instead focus on making a fun game that people would be willing to pay the one-time-fee for.

@Jenron

There is actually an argument that Jagex listens too much to their community without thinking of the health of their game and that caused some bad decisions. I don't have much experience with RS, though.

You really should just make a thread called "Klipik's links to Extra Credits videos" at this point.

I'm so funny I should be a forum clown or something..

inb4 someone creates a thread titled "Stop posting links to youtube videos of Extra Credits"

See, that's the problem with hindsight and watching from the sidelines. It's just so easy to point out what's wrong with someone's actions.
But I guess that's what you get for keeping mum about everything..
